You have to tell exactly what happend to your computer otherwise we don't know what the problem might be.

You get an ticket error or something like that??

You can try the next few things:

log out and log back in.

or delete the blob file and steam will update again.

try those things and you should be able to play again ;)

I was thinking that it could be more of a port problem because he got a new installation of his modem and all. Any suggestions how to test this as I'm going to try and help my brother out tonight. Or could it be the firewall inside his modem?

Well his internet is fine at least that is what he says. So i think it is just steam.

Try the normal steam things and i think it should come fine again.

It might be that his internet connection in Steam isn't set right. I'll check it out tonight anyway.

We've tryed blob file and lots more. I'm still thinking it's a port problem. We have found out now how to change things in the server but what protocol and so does CZ use? TCP or UDP (suggested by BB). And what about the portnumber and so for CZ? Any suggestions tips what we can change?

Otherwise we'll send something to the helpdesk of wanadoo but I would like to try it first myself.

Name server :
Entrance activated:    Yes/No
Protocol :     TCP/UDP
From port :      To port :
Local IP-adress : 192.168.5.10

Have you tried pinging the server from your command line? If that doesn't get through then it might be a firewall issue. Does your modem do any kind of filtering, i.e. NAT?

either copy it from the dos window or type:

 tracert 82.197.65.246 > trace.txt

which will output the tracert to a text file called trace.txt which you can open in notepad:)

I did this from dos prompt:

QuoteMicrosoft Windows XP [Version 5.1.2600]

C:\>tracert 82.197.65.246

Tracing route to 82-197-65-246.hi-velocity.net [82.197.65.246]
over a maximum of 30 hops:

 1  <1 ms   1 ms   1 ms 192.168.1.1
 2  12 ms  12 ms  11 ms 10.125.64.1

Trace complete.

C:\>tracert 82.197.65.246 > trace.txt

C:\>notepad trace.txt

C:\>

The last bit opens notepad with the file loaded - NB when you are tracing to a text file it takes a while for the command to complete and for thcommand prompt to reappear, just leave it until the prompt does appear.

That looks fine. Times are good so it doesn't appear to be routing or connection issue. It must be something to do with the way the new router is configured but what it is I don't know. Can you post make/model of router and see if any of the guys around here can help?

Redirect Address To:  192.168.5.10 (my brother's IP).

Probly the firewall. If your internet is working it may be because common internet programs like ie or firefox and your e mail client etc are automatically configured for web access in the routers firewall, but it may see steam as an unauthorised program attempting to get online. Make sure you give steam and hl or hl2 exe or launcher permission to go online in the routers firewall. Failing that heres steampowered help....

General Fixes:

If you suspect that you are having a problem related to your Internet Connection, please contact your ISP.

Security and Firewall and Anti-Virus Software
If you're using security or firewall or anti-virus software, train them to recognize Steam.exe and all instances of HL.exe and HL2.exe as trusted programs. Consult your program manuals for how to do this.

Typically, if you have a connection problem immediately after a Steam update it is being caused by your firewall.

The best solution is to go to the firewall permissions and remove all references to Steam.exe, HL.exe and HL2.exe and let them be relearned again. Just because there are existing permissions does NOT mean they are correct permissions!

You should also only be running one firewall at a time. Never run two or more firewall programs, they can conflict with each other and cause many different connection problems.

Firewalls and Routers
If your computer is behind a router with a firewall, you'll need to open the ports that Steam uses to connect to the Internet. Most embedded firewalls require you to open ports manually (they don't learn automatically). Routers without firewalls rarely need to have ports opened for game client (but usually do for game servers).

If your configuration software requires port numbers, please use the following:

UDP 1200    (used for friends service)
UDP 27000 to 27015 inclusive
TCP 27020 to 27039 inclusive
TCP 27040 and 27041 only for CyberCafe Owners

Computers running Dedicated Servers need these ports open:

UDP: 27015 and 27020 (default HLDS, SRCDS and HLTV port)
TCP: 27015 (SRCDS Rcon port)

For help on port forwarding for your Router, please consult this excellent website: http://www.portforward.com (http://www.portforward.com).

For assistance with your Firewall you will need to go to the support site for your particular Firewall. Windows XP SP1 firewall does not require any specific configuration changes for Steam to work but XP SP2 firewall does.

Router Problems
Routers can cause connectivity problems. Linksys routers and Wireless routers especially can cause this. Dual WAN Routers are not compatible with Steam. If you have a stand-alone router and you are having connection problems, you can always bypass the router and plug your computer directly into your modem to see if the router is the problem.

Viruses, spyware and malware, netlimiting, anonymous IP masking programs
Connection problems can also arise if your system is infected with a virus or spyware. Programs like Cybersitter, Netlimiter, X-Fire and Stegnos Anonymous Internet can also interfere with normal Steam operations.

There are many free applications to help remove spyware. Here are some links we have found to be useful:

http://www.computercops.biz (http://www.computercops.biz)
http://www.io.com/~cwagner/spyware.html (http://www.io.com/~cwagner/spyware.html)
http://www.dslreports.com/faq/spyware (http://www.dslreports.com/faq/spyware)
Steam Related fixes
If you have ruled out the external problems we've outlined above, you can also do the following:

If Steam related files became corrupted, they can interfere with Steam’s ability to connect, you may have to delete or re-install these files.

Steam and HL related files that can get corrupted:

ClientRegistry.blob file,
Steam.exe and Steam.dll files
Steam's GCF (game cache) files,
any custom game content you may have installed.
It is very easy to verify that your Game Cache files are good, you can verify them using the links on this FAQ:

How can I verify that my GCF Cache files are good?

Make sure that you're not running Steam.exe and HL.exe under compatibility mode in Windows XP.

If you have two network cards installed, disable all network connections except the one associated with your internet connection. Also, disable QoS, uPNP and Wireless Zero services if your connection has these enabled. Only TCP/IP should be enabled as a service in your network properties.

Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) is not compatible with Steam. You will not be able to use Steam on a computer if the only network connection is through ICS.

ISP providers that use transparent proxy caching methods or that mask your IP address can also cause Steam to fail to connect.

If all else fails, try uninstalling Steam (use the add/remove option in the control panel) and re-install a fresh copy.

HtH scot  Good Luck

Just a suggestion ...

We have within the community people with experience, knowledge and the desire to help other members with their PC related problems.

If you run XP (or W2K) then you can allow remote access to your PC by others to help try to solve your problems. It might be worth persuing this avenue if you feel you can trust the person trying to help you out.
