Had my first trip into Molten Core last night with a 40 person Raid group (thanks for the invite Fatal!) organised by the SoG and Danu guilds. We managed to kill the first three bosses (Lucifer, Magmadar and Gehannas), which apparently is a first for the group. Great fun was had by all. I even managed to achieve a last man standing with Gehannas and my cloth-armored Mage managed to deliver the final body blows which killed him :D I have a screen shot which I will have to post of me, a Pallie on the floor recovering and 38 other bodies lying around the corpse of Gehennas
We're planning to go to Onyxia's Lair this Friday, so I need to finish the Onyxia series of Quests by then to get myself the trinket charm that allows me entry to OL. So if anyone on Aszune wants to join me in completing that quest line then give me a shout and we can buddy up to finish the series more quickly!
TL.
Tip: When trying to kill Magmadar always make sure you have a Dwarven Priest in your group. They alone have Fear Ward which will allow you to ensure that the MT doesn't lose any aggro. Magmadar is seriously hard without a Dwarf Priest.
TL.
How did it go in the lair ???
OL was tough and we did not kill Onyxia, although it was our first trip there. We'll be going again this Friday to see if we can improve. We got her down to about 33% health, but we need to tweak our tactics to ensure we can take her down further (which I am convinced we will do this Friday).
In Molten Core we're not so bad, we've toppled the first 4 bosses and home to get the last 3 before the instance reset on Friday. We are tending to do the 2-3 bosses per raid (the instance is a 6 day reset) so hope to get to the 6th boss. possibly 7th by the week's end.
The best Guilds can do all 7 bosses in MC in 4-5 hours - although how I do not know, our 40 person raid is at full flow just to do what we are doing
TL.
I've done the Onyxia raid a few times. There is definately a correct way to attack her. I suspect there is in fact only one basic technique that is usable. Everything else will end in distaster. Some of my pals on Argent Dawn did her with a 19 raid group which is pretty impressive. The best I have been in was a 29 group. I still don't fully understand what the correct approach is, I just stand where I am told and shoot lots of bullets.
Our approach is like this:
(I see no reason not to post this as the tactics for OL are freely available on the web)
- We use the standard OL positoning - 8 teams 4 NW of Onyxia, 4 NE of her, the melee in both southern teams on both sides look after the whelps.
- We use CT_RaidAssist to broadcast warnings and timings until 'Deap Breath' fire damage etc
- MT takes position in the North
- We let the MT build aggro for the first 3% of Onyxia's Health
- Once she is down to 97% health we then start low DPS (wands) and some melee (we keep other melee to handle the dragon whelps should they spawn)
- By using wands during this initial phase (and the occasional frost bolt etc) we preserve mana so that ranged casters are at full mana when phase 2 of the fight starts
- At about 65-70% health she starts phase 2 of the fight and starts to fly so melee is useless and we therefore use maximum sustained DPS on her from ranged weapons (casters/hunters etc).
- We usually handle this bit well and get her down to 40% health fairly comfortably - the one problem we do have is that late in phase 2 she backs up (still in flight) to the very south of the cave, thus going out of range of most of the casters in the NE and NW sides of the cave. The result is that we end up with ranged attacks having to move south into the middle of the cave towards her to get back into range to cast.
- At this point we try to revert to wands to reduce the DPS we are delivering in the hope that the MT can regain aggro quickly.
- This is no problem at this stage but is a problem when phase 3 starts.
- At about 40% health phase 3 of the fight starts and Onyxia lands in the southern end of the cave. This is where our problems seem to start.
- The MT struggles to regain aggro even though we have all stopped attacking.
- During this period Onyxia swipes and 'deep breath' fire damages a load of our raid group - if we attack we pull aggro, if we don't then we have a good chance of being killed whilst doing nothing!
- Because our ranged weapons were pulled south into the middle of the cave during the later stages of phase 2 in order to stay in range and continue DPS then the melee damage dished out by Onyxia is higher than id we had all stayed back.
- Basically during the start of phase 3 we usually lose a sufficient number of people to make the attempt a wipe. We have not yet managed to successfully pass aggro back to the MT and then then pull her back into position with the MT at the north of the cave.
Any suggestions welcomed.

They's be melted by a fire ball and evaporate in about 2 seconds - but on the other hand that would be quite funny to watch :norty:

Big Spoiler Waning .... :D
Nice, but did you notice that in 'take 1' when they first pulled Onyxia that the rear of the raid party was slow off the ramp and managed to pull the respawning Warder as well? :roflmao: :roflmao:
How they managed to survive with people at her rear I do not know, the south of the cave is generally known as 'death valley' where nobody survives

Had a great time in Molten Core last night. Tactics and discipline across the 8 team, 40 person raid party are improving well and we are now able to take the first few bosses fairly confidently up until Baron Gedd when it starts getting a little more difficult.
Up until last night we had never managed to kill Shazzrah, but last night we cleared the Baron, Shazzrah and then for good measure went on to kill both Sulfuron Harbinger and Golemagg the Incinerator for raid first kills. Golemag dropped four epic items! If you're interested you can see the drop list here (http://sog.siteburg.com/listitems.php?p=history).
Next up is Majordomo Executus, but we got a few more to complete the necessary quest tomorrow, so hopefully by Thursday we'll be ready to have a crack at him.

How long did it take sounds like a hell of a long time 3hours+ ?

f a long time 3hours+ ?
After an initial delay in getting started the actually active raid time was about 2hrs 30mins.

Welll, last night's MC raid was my night. Having built up some DKP I ended up getting these:
Arcanist Belt (http://www.thottbot.com/?i=27040)
Arcanist Gloves (http://www.thottbot.com/?i=27514)
Fire Runed Grimoire (http://www.thottbot.com/?i=40360)
The belt I am particularly chuffed with, it's a random rare drop within MC and so is the hardest part of the set to get. We also managed to have our first crack at Majordomo last night: we wiped both times, but at least we know what we're up against now and can spend the next visit concentrating solely on him before our final goal, Ragnaros.
Silver Oak Guardians are also on the look out for more L60s to join the raid - so if anyone from dMw wants in then please let me know and I'll put you in touch with Tenilia or Kreuz. We're regular TeamSpeak users so it's a pretty good laugh. Dillinja (Fatal), Jeebus (FatBob) and myself are already members, why not come and join us for some MC/OL fun?

Sounds like fun. I've not been playing my Mage much, been a Horde for quite a while now and am loving killing the filthy alliance pigs :P
Anyway, my mage is lev 57 now and with the free 1.5 levels of rest being credited today I should be 60 in a week or so, so I'll be up for a blast. I've just started playing the mage again this week and forgot how much fun it can be. :D

Whisper me before then as you'll need a while to complete the quest series for the key to OL and to do Attunement to the Core if you have not already done so.
TL.
We managed to kill Majordomo Executus on last night's Molten Core raid, on our third attempt.
Majordomo Executus is the ninth boss of the Molten Core and Ragnaros' main servant. He is also the last salamander boss. With eight adds and Majordomo unkillable, this unique fight sounded real difficult, but once we had the strategy sorted out and everyone remembered who to kill, who not to kill, who to kill a bit and in which order to attack each of the nine targets!
Majordomo has the ability to teleport someone to the middle of the room on a "magma plate" which deals insane damage per second. His adds have a Blast Wave spell similar to the Mage version but much less damage. After any four of the adds have been killed the Priest adds become immune to Polymorph effects. Throughout the fight, the adds will "power up" and "power down." When "powered up" (a simple blue shield surrounds them) they will have a 50% chance to reflect either magical attacks or melee attacks based - it's quite funny watching a caster killing himself by casting onto the adds when they are shielded!
Anyway, the instance will have reset by the next run, so we'll be starting all over at the beginning again but at least we now know we can clear all the bosses up to and including Majordomo. Hopefully the next time we'll attempt Ragnoros and for the first time complete a total clearance of MC :D
When we've mastered MC and everyone has picked a good enough selection of Tier 1 epic equipment then we'll expand our horizons and also start raiding Black Wing Lair and start picking up the Tier 2 Epic set items.
We're still looking for more L58+ players to get involved with our raid, so shout if you are interested in getting involved and picking up some Epic item boss drops.

Well, it had to happen and it did tonight - Onyxia was felled tonight by the SoG/Danu raid party on our first attempt of the night.

Jas had his baptism of fire in Molten Core last night and saw his first Epic drops from kills of both Lucifron and Magmadar. Jobok hopes to join us on Tuesday once he has finished the Attunement quest.
It was our first raid since the Danu/SoG alliance finished and it was great to see us down two bosses on our first run - albeit that a few of the tactics were somewhat less than textbook!
I'm looking forward to the Raid report form Jas to see how he felt it went from his perspective.

In a nutshell very confusing
For me tho it was not too difficult a job ...spam heal / innovate priest if needed.
I went in without knowing any tactics so i just kept my mouth shut and tried to pick up the stuff people were typing / saying
The first few encounters showed me how long these battles can last ...the first wipe i had spammed all my mana in the first 30 secs. the battle lasted alot longer and i was left with nothing to do but wade in and hope to get a crit hit for a free healing spell
I have a lot to learn ..... my first learnig point is take more mana pots in and get my first aid up to 300
Im not sure how it went as its my first 40 man raid ...but everyone seemed to think it went well
I loved the way after a few wipes people started to take notice of what was being asked of them
Very tense all the way thru ...great stuff :)

Dragon kill points. Basically you accumilate points for participating in the raid and completing certain objectives. Then if an item of 'phat lewt' drops that you want you can bid your DKP on it. It's a simple form of currency, and a system that most seem to be adopting now.
Our current system is fixed value DKP, so if the same item drops several times then the price is the same amount of DKP for each person who wants it. First choice goes to the character from the appropriate class that currently has the most DKP. When the raid first started (and everyone had zero DKP) then appropriate class members rolled for the Epic drop. Having a system like this avoids the ridiculous bidding war that kicks off when raids first start out and a few people end up spending 400 (as yet unearned) DKP just so they have the *first* Epic drop instead of the usual 80DKP.
Now that we are established we are looking to change the system a little bit to avoid other problems and may well introduce a bidding system for unwanted items or lesser secondary items to avoid a 200 Gold item being disenchanted into a 4 Gold shard :(

Scooby in disguise? Is this topical?
Jobok picked up his first Molten Core Epic drop on Friday night: Nightslayer Bracelets (http://www.thottbot.com/index.cgi?i=Nightslayer%20Bracelets).
And last night Jas has picked up the Cenarion Spaulders (http://www.thottbot.com/index.cgi?i=Cenarion%20Spaulders), the 3rd Epic piece of his Epic armor set
Last night saw a new 'First' for the Silver Oak Guardians raid - with the Molten Core instance reset we cleared 6 bosses in one run: Lucifron, Magmadar, Gehennas, Garr, Baron Geddon and Shazzrah. The great raid led to 14 Epic drops (http://sog.siteburg.com/listitems.php?p=history), but unfortunately we didn't get a single random epic drop the whole time we were there :(
Much fun was had.......
With a bit of luck we will be restarting Onxyia Lair runs this coming Friday now that we have helped people through the difficult bits of the OL Key quest series. :D
