Title: LCD or Plasma
Post by: Gone_Away on August 15, 2005, 01:49:36 PM
Hi Guys,

I've heard a lot of conflicting stories about which TV technology will be better in the long run Plasma or LCD.

I was wondering what you folks have heard or what your thoughts are. From what I can see, since the uptake of LCD telly's, the prices of plasma units have come down significantly in order to stay compettitive.

I've heard that plasma lose colour definition after only a couple of years?? Any truth to that?

have you checked out www.avforums.com  (http://www.avforums.com)?

I use them quite a lot for opinions on various bits (last item was on my surround amp)

Some good FAQ's here.

LCD FAQ (http://www.avforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=222029)

Plasma FAQ (http://www.avforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=161811)

Personally, I'd say LCD is going to win. Plasma is old tech now, and if it was so great, why are computer monitors LCD and not plasma? :P

Still, for display purposes, the higher light output of the plasma will win over an LCD but for home viewing that is really a non issue. As for the color fade, can't really say as I've not noticed it. We have a first generation plasma here at work, it's several years old now and the display is still as colorful as a normal TV.

I've heard Plasma is already being dropped in the next year or so, LCD won.

Yup - I heard that too

unless you're dying to get one I would certainly hang on - There's all the guff about HDTV coming so make sure you get one which is compatible for HDTV - else you'll probably be replacing it in a few years.

Well that's a bargain at £6,500

I think I'll buy two...

I'm still going to wait - they're dropping in price every month. I did order a 42 inch plasma screen but they (John Lewis) failed to deliver it on time so I told them to keep it. I'm glad as I subsequently read some bad reports about them.

The ony other caveat I have is that if you're goingto buy one and if the price isnt' too huge a difference then I would get if from somewhere like John Lewis who will give you a 5-year guarantee with their TV's.  Extra warranty on LCD or Plamsa is really expensive...

LCD.  End of story.  Even if you buy a good plasma now, lookout for the screen burn making it worthless if 5 yrs or so.  And as has been said, HDTV is not an option, it's a must.

Is there any ETA on when we can expect HDTV to start being used in the UK?

Re HDTV:

I recall reading something a couple of months ago in one of the Home Cinema magazines about TVs that are advertised as 'HD ready' but who were in fact only partially 'ready'.  I can't remember exactly what it was, but it maybe something like HD having two standards and a 'proper' HD TV should cope with the full range of HD TV whereas these ones only did half the format?  Can anyone remember reading a similar article and add to the detail of this fuzzy recollection?

OLEDs already kicks both plasma and LCD asses. Brighter, sharper, faster, thinner and and possible to watch in full sunlight. 20" have already been made and now we just have to wait for the bigger ones.

Says the chemist...

Just you wait, us solid-state guys are going to have nanowire LEDs up and working i no time. Then we can start discussing resolutions and pixel size...  :narnar:

Seriously, though. OLED and other TFT solutions is the way to go.
