God I hope Valve ditch the idea of using Steam. This is just the beta of CS 1.6 and it is impossible to get anything out of it. At least with HTTP and FTP you could find mirrors around the world :(

And just to rub it in you can't configure it to go out past a proxy server. Bar stewards!

No such luck, its the work one. was hoping to download it ovet our spanky T3 connection, burn it and load it at home.
It doesn't work that way I'm afraid.
The 4Mb Steam install will access the web and download all the content you need to play CS1.6 Beta to your harddrive. But it's not stored like your usual CS folder. You can't get at it. You will need to wait for the full release of 1.6 to see any actual content.
I don't know if it's just congestion, I shoudn't think so looking at the low numbers actually playing on the server list on steam, but I can't join a game, I did once manage to run CS1.6 and whilst configuring the keys it crashed.
Still trying though, it's fun to try.
I thought it was odd that every server in my list had one player in it. Then I realised that it's probably people who got so fed up of failing to connect that they started their own server to run around in.

Well it appears that some last minute changes have been made, and Valve Software is not releasing the Steam 2.0 / Counter-Strike 1.6 client this evening after all. Obviously there are a number of leaked clients floating around out there although people arent really having much luck with them.
Steam Beta 2.0 Admission Suspended : The Counter-Strike and Team Fortress communities have maxed out the Steam 2.0 beta servers, resulting in the temporarily suspension of admission to the beta as more content servers are put online. The current Steam content servers offer over 500 megabits of bandwidth, all of which the community is consuming right now. Anyone interested in hosting a Steam content server should email biz@steampowered.com. (Content server requirements can be found at //www.steampowered.com Those who have already joined the beta are encouraged to continue their participation and submit their feedback.
The file was never even made official and we were never given the green light to put the client out on Fileshack, you can thank the gaming press for leaking it out early. I suppose if just a leak was enough to max out the servers, an actual official release would have just been ugly.

No, been a couple of days now. I THINK it might be to do with closing HL or CS:S with other than the official 'exit' route. Just a hunch.

No it wasn't bad just an F12 exit. But it's nor that anyway, I just exited in the prescribed manner and it did the same.
