Title: Is This a Sign of Things to Come...

I downloaded it, played it earlier and now, because the steam network is busy, I'm unable to play it. Oh well thought out Valve!!!!

It could indeed all be about to go horribly wrong.

Four years (more or less) of leaving us all alone to make the CS mod, make maps, make skins, provide servers, form clans, build leagues and have fun.
Apart from CS retail which most people ignored no-one tried to bugger it all up in the name of profits.
And now the corporate tossers start to stick their oar in........

We've got GameSPY who are not wrongly named
File Planet who actually expect me to pay to download patches etc.
Jolt who's price go up in line with the lag on their rental servers
Barrysworld who go err bust and then come back with a fee to play on public servers
the list goes on.....

and now Steam........we're DOOMED I tell you, we're all DOOMED

here endeth the mindless rant.

I believe that Valve were limiting the bandwidth for the STEAM BETA and given that it is so new and a lot of dl's will still be going on, I reckon that there limited BETA capacity has just been flooded.  I have no idea about the real thing, but I would fully suspect that as they intend to use it as a retail ditribution channel that it will have substantial and sufficient bandwidth on tap.  Not that I give a toss about STEAM though cos can't get broadband in Milton Keynes  :(   Anyone know where I can join a HPB server?

I found it took a bit of perceverance.

By contually ending the program when it failed it performed worse and worse. But after a reinstall I could use most of Steams features pretty well.

I got onto CS yesterday no problem and played on several servers, and I must say, it is loking good. I am particularly impressed withe new improved smoke granades and the new guns are interesting to.

At the moment I appear to be getting a number of updates to steam and CS which should make it more stable.

The issues I found were:

1) The chat program always failed to connect
2) I could never start a game from the games menu
3) The ONLY way to start a game of CS was by joining a server

But this morning, the pc booted up fine, steam loaded, got two updates, and logged in first time.

 :D  quite impressive actually.

Yup the same thing happened to me. Admitidly downloading the updates to games is a bot slow but I can live with that. Anyone fancy a test play of CS1.6 on BB server this afternoon? 4pm perhaps?

Yep I'm up for a game.

I also have a server running on my pc if you fancy trying it out:

213.152.32.253:27015

same PW as Meat Hook.

Let me know if it works.

I have got CS 1.5 and CS 1.6 both running

details are:

CS 1.5

blueball.deadmen.co.uk:27016

CS 1.6

blueball.deadmen.co.uk:27015

BOTH servers are passworded as per Meathook!

It would have been nice if I could have got 1.6 on port 27016 and 1.5 on port 27015 but 1.6 wanted to play silly buggers :(

Still no good.

I notice that the latency now shows 1200 (max?) whereas before it was 50ish.

I'll try again in a little while.

OK We're back again :-)

I'll stop fiddling and let you guys play

CS 1.5

 blueball.deadmen.co.uk:27016

CS 1.6

 blueball.deadmen.co.uk:27015

BOTH servers are passworded as per Meathook- I've gotta go out soon so I'll PM the rcon password  for the 1.6 server to Albert and Oldie. RCON isnt on the 1.5 server - it uses AdminMod. Both servers set to 8 players but I think that might be a bit too many TBH. GL HF

Looks like my Steam has gone AWOL again  :(

Can't do a thing at the moment - dreaded 'Winsock' errors.

Sorry, didn't explain my point well. My point is that we are now not only reliant on our own end working but steam has to be up as well. Imagine it, you've just spent £30 on a game and you cannot even play it locally on your PC because the steam network is down. I'm sorry but Valve has just not thought that one thruogh. If I want to play a single player game on my PC I shouldn't even need an internet connection. It is a design weakness :)

My 2p (I'm having a bit of an anti-Valve day)
