Well many may not have even heard of these formats but these are going to soon be the new formats to replace dvd. The two formats are hd dvd pioneered by Toshiba and blu-ray by Sony. Both are going to compete as the VHS and Bentamax systems did before but there are high stakes as the Betamax manufacturers found out. Well from the beginning cd's held 0.7gb then double dvd's 8.85gb a single sided blu ray can hold 25gb and a double layer some 50gb. Seems very cool to me but head over to blu-ray.com (http://www.blu-ray.com) and hddvdprg.com (http://www.hddvdprg.com/hddvd/index.html) to find out more

Thats mental.
"100GB Blu-ray Disc Prototype"
the two groups recently agreed to combine their efforts to work towards Drive designs that would best accomodate both types of disc. HD-DVD is more back-compatable with "old-skool" DVDs while blu-ray can store more data and offers the hyper sensitive data protective lot an extra layer or two of security against hackers and rippers.
blu-ray is obviously the more advanced tech, but HD-DVD still has som advantages. I believe the music/film industry was more inclined to go for HD-DVD as it required a lower outlay, while all the tech companies are for blu-ray due to it's performance and capacity being far superior...
Both sides are well aware of the old betamax/vhs story and are keen not to become the second betamax, hence we are likely to see both technologies and ultimately the comsumer will decide depending what is available. I think Blu-ray is likely to feature in the PS3?
reasonable source of info for this sort of thing...

Good friend on mine works for a company that manufactures the machines used to make dvds/cds/etc and he reckons that blu-ray is superior and will be more future-proof.
But the machines used to make the discs have to be way more accurate to ensure that the data is concentric and thus that the dvd will read properly. Increased accuracy needs better materials and engineering, so the costs of the machines and thus production will rise.
