...no , not your knickers, your knicks!
I know I have a somehat lame nick.... I've used it since I was about... a teenager.
Does your nicknames have any particular meaning?
Pardon me if I'm getting all personal with you :D
In the begging me and Doris played under one name (KilFrenzy), mainly because i was too lazy to change it and because we were sharing a steam account and computer.
After a while we became regulars and thus needed to differentiate (is that a word?) between the two of us. I quickly thought up "Hippy" mid game and it stuck.
My first name was da_Shadow in my Atari days and so...When I got in my first clan it was F.U.B.A.R. (F*cked Up Beyond All Recognition).
Lots of people used it and I wanted another name and at that time I was trying the name Grolsch but that didn't sound cool.
Then I got some replies that I'm a duivel (devil in English) with a gun and by coincedence I was drinking a bottle of Duvel at the time. First it was: Duvel but then someone pointed me out that DuVeL would be looking better.

well my name was given to me by Blueball ... because my old name (kilfrenzy) conflicted in game with Frenzy... "Frenzy kill kilfrenzy "

My first clan was called that!
Decided on Apoc as in short for Apocalypse way back when I was 14 or so, thought it was sooooo cool, now not sure but I really can't be bothered changing it.
I'm Paddy and I'm BIG. That seems fairly easy to me. I get confused when I am more than one person. Its much better when people call me Paddy, I know who they are talking to.
having spent most of my gaming time waiting to spawn...I was called "I See Dead People"
That's what I was since CS 1.3...I was a Jolt12 Reg...until...
Oldie came pimping on the Jolt forums :P
Before that...when I first tried to name an email account, every name I tried was rejected....so I started typing in random words....Philly Blunt* was taken...so I reversed the words and hey presto...I'm BluntPhilly...then in Delta Force I was Blunt Instrument.
On Meathook I was getting complaints that I See Dead People was too long (JohnnyAppleseed...Flibbermeister and so on, are apparently easier to say)....
so I changed to Blunt... :D
*Philly Blunt is a type of cigar (emptied out and stuffed with weed  )

PENDRAGON for me was two-fold.
Firstly A good friend of mine died in a Bike accident and the last time I saw him was at the Pendragon Festival in Wales. so it's a kinda tribute
Secondly I did my degree in Classics and specialised in Roman Britain which went all the way up to Uther (Pendragon) and Arthur etc.... A nice period in British History.
Other names I have had were Strabo and JustLaunch (when playing on MSN zone!).
PEN
I started out as SilentAmber or SA. Totaly origional and never seen else where (probably cause it sounded like a girl name). Anyway, i was with a clan called DT for over 3 years and when the clan died out I killed the name SA. Silent ebcause i generally didnt speak much and Amber becuase I had just watched Jurastic Park.
Jamoe is a nickname in RL, my Uncle started calling me that (he tends to give ppl nicknames) and it stuck.
First regular nickname would have been Moriarty, after sherlock holmes' arch nemesis (also what my dad sometimes called me when I was little...) Then, when I got into quake2 online (mainly catch-the-chicken mod) I picked "suicidal_monkey" as I tended to always be the person with the most deaths on the server and I've now sort of shortened it to s_monkey, just "monkey", or generally any other monkey-based label. Monkey_Of_Doom works well in the UT series 8)

Same deal here. I have had that name for 12 years now so it also just kinda sticks. Me and mono did good ol' tracker music back then and I came up with that name, mostly because I was in need of one.
I figured elanvital(ize) (sort of giving life) with a d in front would give the word the opposite meaning, which suited our rather melancoly music. Now it is more of a nuisance when playing "hey you.. delantaivlal.. huh? what the hell is that for a name? Anyway fire away!" .. and not the least, with "L'oreal el'vital" on the market I feel kinda dumb. Hoepfully people haven't seen the connection yet... oops...
If don't already do, when in game, feel free to call me del or delan...
FlibberMeister was an adaption of FBG which stood for Flubber Blubber Gibber. That came from playing cs after a night of drinking champagne, wine, guiness and stellar and i thought it was about time i created a nick name.
I basically tidied up the onsewing jumble of letters as i attempted to type something in. I wasn't particularly coherant. (i couldn't double click the CS short cut either).
My first nick in the tracker days, as Delan mentioned, was Tantalos. As I remember it, some kind of myth character that I thought suited my situation as a sad and lonely teenager well.
Then I got tired of it and changed it to mono. Not very imaginative, but then I added _DNA - which is the danish word 'AND' spelled backwards. 'And' means duck (the one that says 'quack') and derives from our bands name 'TROLDAnd/2' ...
In relation to BF2 and my misfortunes there, the other meaning of the word 'duck' is even more relevant, if not very effectively applied by me, as my kill/death ratio reveals...
I ment to spell Warden, but I couldn't spell back in those day. (still can't :P ) because of the misspelling (and daft name) it's pretty original and have never had any problems registering it anywhere. So it stuck. Unless I registerd before and forgot my password :o I guess I liked the idea of sounding like I was in charge :P Had it for about 5 years I think
I used A Twig after I started playing Delta Force. In the top right of the screen it used to say "Player X was killed by Player Y". I thought it was quite amusing to see "Player X was killed by A Twig." Used it ever since.

I did a survey on this about 2 years ago. the average age then was about 34. Of course everyone is older now and new people have joined so it might be time to do it again.
Alternatively, we could keep a running total and show it on the homepage if we used PHP to work out average age from people's birthday entries (assuming they have entered anything in their forum profile). Don't know how tricky it would be for OB to interrogate the forum database.
Used to be called DeathWarrant > after the film

Well you all know what the BIG bit is for...
(Owwwww, Matron!)
But the Ranger started when I used to play 'Ghost Recon' on the Apple Macintosh Internet game service - 'GameRanger'.
I was - then - [ ]Beaty, but due to a loophole in GameRanger when I changed clans I found that someone had pinched my 'Beaty' nickname and so had to use something else...So I chose Ranger, after GameRanger and I have used 'Ranger' since.
Beaty is just what everyone calls me as my second name is 'Beat' (figures the way I play!).

Well I first started off as anything from El Kabong, to The Alabama Tick to all sorts of things, after a while of playing cs on my lonesome I got in with some of the original guys from BGAT and added a couple to my MSN, one of them said it would be confusing having soo many names so I dropped all the old ones and kept the one that was on MSN at the time. Just because your not as BIG as me!
Target - because I usually am ...
Cadaver.
My pathetic attempt at irony really, because in CS I used to end up dying rather quickly. Things haven't changed with BF2...
Maybe this has been posted before but since we have alot of new players on the WoW-section and so, how did you get your name?
I got the name DuVeL a while back now, it used to be da_Shadow back in my Atari days. In my first onlinegamingadventures I still used this untill I got in my first clan. I changed it back then to FuBaR.
Since this name is used by loads of people I decided to think of something else...
I thought of changing my name to Gr0lsch as I got called a Grolschhacker alot but that didn't sound allright.
Then one evening I got called a devil with a gun and I was drinking a bottle of Duvel then. Then I was like: :g:
Mhmmzzz, that has a good ring to it!
So...How did you get your name?
in about 92 we had a group of guys (and girls) and we started playing gp2 serial linked with 6 players on each computer taking turns to do laps in their own cars.
well anyway we had to decide a name so the guy who was my racing partner (in the same f1 team) called himself beaver and i thought hmmmm canary and then someone said, but you like star trek you geek, why not worf
and then it hit me canaryworf !!!!!!, i still use this name on certain servers, forums etc
im called sulky_uk because my last name is o' sullivan and i coudnt log onto a server as sully, or sullyuk or sully_uk, so i thought feck it noone will have sulky_uk, and they didnt.
and i use this name for other forums servers etc

I used to use the nick Moriarty (after Sherlock Holmes nemesis, was my dad's occasional nickname for me...) back when the only network gaming I did was red-alert, c&c, and doom2 at the local university. kind of like a mini-lan was run every weekend by the maths/it chap. Then when I got to the uk, and finally got broadband and a half-decent pc I got into quake2 (mainly the "catch the chicken" mod:lmfao:) and, deciding that the little characters looked sort of like monkeys started using the name monkey. I tended to run in guns blazing and die a helluva lot, so I gained the prefix suicidal_. In Unreal and other deathmatch games though I usually use monkey_of_doom because it annoys people:flirty:. These days I typically just use s_monkey because I started to get picked on for not being "suicidal enough" :narnar: heheh
The nickname I first used when I started with IRC was BofuR (as many of you might know, one of the dwarves from the book The Hobbit). I still use that as my name for quite a lot of other sites and forums, but when I started playing WoW that doesn't sound like a good name for a Night Elf.
The only really criteria I had when I started looking for a name for my first character in WoW, was that it had to be something that sounded really elf-ish. I found a couple of name generators on the web, got a looong list of names for male NE, and Threbrilith just poped up as the clear winner. It has just the right sound, and it's also possible to shorten to Threb, still sounding quite good.
My other character's name (Thiril), I mostly came up with myself. I had started naming my characters after the standard that they should all start with Th (have some low-levels called Thelimos, Thruum, and also two low-level horde chars called Thark and Thelimos).
Some of you might perhaps have noticed that alot of those who know me (from WoW) mostly refer to me as Bob. That started out in a Zul'Farrak run in the 40s (talking about levels here, not year :P) with Wab and Balric (two former guildies).
Wad was to tired of trying to pronounce Threbrilith on TS and spell it correct in chat, so he got ****ed and just started calling me Bob. In a couple of weeks it simply spread, and it has kind of stuck since than :)
Befor dMw I played counterstrike in a small clan caled DeltaTeam [DT] (Wordan who post here on occaision was the founder). My name back then was [DT]SilentAmber (shortened to SA). That name came about when I use to play ghost recon (which was my first online game). I used it as I was sneaky and quite, I can't really remember how the Amber part came about, but I got confused as a girl (still do :D ).
Anyway, I kept SA up till about 2/3 years ago. DT split (was getting on for 4 years old), mainly due to inactive members (uni college etc). I decided that SA should die with DT.
Jamoe is a nick name I have in RL, given to me by my step uncle who has a habbit of giving ppl nicknames. Derived from my real name, James.
One dark & stormy night in my local getting drunk, we were having the typical random convos, one that happened to be what could we call ourselves if we decided to be a **** take cover band ( in the days we still dreamt about rock-stardom ) one that came out was Limp Risted for Limp Bizkit, shortly after that night I started playing AvP on Mplayer, you had to register a name & you couldn't change it, well, all the names I could come up with being used & then the name came to me & i tried Limp Riztid, & after various levels of leeting myself up I turned into LiMP_RiZtiD.....people mainly called me Riz or Limp & my name changed from one to the other for a while & I eventually stuck with RizZy. so there.
<-- Well, duh :narnar:
Though I have dropped the LordOfJelly ending in recent years, that actually has a story behind it.
It all started sometime in the 90's when a 14.4 modem was the don and bulletin boards were the king for multiplayer gaming.
Doom was the game of choice and I used to connect to a bb server in South Wales called armageddon. The founder of that board had a rather feisty gf and for some reason she's always bring the worst out of me and in the open text area I just started shouting JELLY! As I was eating some black cherry jelly at the time. Every time someone asked me something the reply was JELLY! And so my nickname on there was unofficially Jelly as I signed up as Gandalf.
Anyway, once the bulletin board scene died and internet gaming took off I discovered CS. I initially started playing with the nick of Gandalf, but as you can imagine there were a lot of those around! So I appended LordOfJelly to the end to make it unique.
So there you go, if you're still reading, you're sad :narnar:
Errr... It's my initials.
Mines from an episode of the young ones (university challenge episode, some of you may remember).
The questions were things like 'who holds the world record for the largest number of marshmallows put up ones nostril?' and 'who holds the world record for the stikiest bogey in the world?', all the answers were Toxteth O'Grady.
I have had several names though, Mrs Doyle (from Father Ted) and JackTheNipper when I was a v. young lad.
Now I just call myself Toxteth and people often ask me if I am from Toxteth (in Liverpool), but it definately isn't that...
I'm a Ninja. Also, I'm a Freak in the classic RPG sense of the name.
when I got my 1st ISP account, I spent ages trying to register a name; but it was AOL (spit) and with gazillions of yanks already signed-up it was almost impossible to get a name I could live with.
as I was smoking these at the time... (http://www.altadisusa.com/image/PhilliesBluntRbow.jpg)
I tried to get phillyblunt, that was taken so I swapped it round to Bluntphilly...
I used to play delta force as Blunt_instrument but dropped the last bit after a while and became Blunt.
I did use "I see dead people" in cs1.3 for a while (appropriate as I was dead mostly), but it was a bit of a mouthful, so I reverted to Blunt.
When I started playing CS I had never tried another FPS before, thus the name 'cannon fodder' seemed appropriate. Then when I stumbled onto N42, and later found my way here, I realised that there already was a player by that name (whatever happend to him, btw?).
I thought about it for a bit and figured I might as well go with the first murderer in history, hoping some of the talent might rub off. Gen 4:15 also was reassuring in keeping me alive a bit longer, but that dont seem to work... Divine intervention isn't what it used to be. :(

Once messed up a exam i should have done, so ppl called me the blackout, eventualy shorting to blackout. When i moved to collage that nick faded and i started playing Asherons Call, name gen there gave Ninwa Banli-Zan, which was allready used so i butcherd it to Niwa Banli-Zan, which i still use, and used on CSS (playing as Niwa) untill i started on boomer where TL told me to use my wow char name (Bastet)
Still have Niwa on my MSN, these days complemented by / Bastet :narnar:
Easy, I'm fat, hairy and I like eating fish and sleeping.

Otherwise I'd not know who the heck you were!
TeaLeaf started as [TEA]_Leaf in CS as a joke name - I had the idea of getting a group of casual gamer friends together to set up a joke clan and all play using the [TEA] clan name, my name was [TEA]_Leaf. Old timers still know me as 'Leaf' or 'Leafy' from my [TEA] days. Other potential clan [TEA] members would have to follow suit and would be called [TEA]_Cake. [TEA]_Bag, [TEA]_Pot, [TEA]_Towel, [TEA]_Time, etc - you get the idea. Anyway, the idea remained a private one and I never bothered to persuade friends to join me in my comedy [TEA] crusade and when I joined dMw the potential clan name -=[dMw]=-[TEA]_Leaf was deemed just a bit too wierd, so I became -=[dMw]=-TeaLeaf. TL is the obvious abbreviation for TeaLeaf. TL however spawned my WoW names: phonetic TL = Teaelle and the 'elle' bit also made reference to the fact my first toon (my mage) was a female character. The rest of the WoW names came about because I couldn't be bothered to come up with a bunch of unique names, so Teaell, Teael, Teaele and all the other variations were created.
TL.
My original name, Pendragon is twofold:
Firstly, I wrote my thesis on Roman Britain andthe Romano-British. Uther Pendragron kept popping up in various legends and folk-lore and I always liked it as a name
Secondly, a good friend died in a motorbike accident and the last time I had spoke to him he was at the PENDRAGON Festival in Wales, so it seemed fitting.
My lastest incarnation, Penfold, is what Tealeaf kept calling me a couple of LAN's ago, and at the time I was thinking that I should have a name change. I went with it as I used to love that little chubby hamster fella on Dangermouse and, best of all, it can still be shortened to PEN which is what most people call me.
PEN
PS. Penfold is also a rather nice New World wine I'm rather partial too :)
Back in the day (tm), when I was just getting into online gaming, and was about... 13 I think, I used 'KingGing' on CounterStrike and UT. Simple. I was ginger, and thought I was good (I was wrong). As I got a bit older, I thought that sounded more than a bit immature, so I looked around for another name. I'm tall, ginger, unfortunately not hugely muscular, but I do really like the Discworld books by Terry Pratchett, particularly the ones featuring the Ankh Morpork City Watch, so I took my name from Captain Carrot of the watch. My MSN name does actually have the Cpt. in front of it, but I thought in an online FPS or RPG world that might consitute trying to give myself authority that I hadn't earned, so I dropped it.

What can I say. Big fan of the Japanese horror movie Ringu (The Ring).I discovered the movie back in 2000, way before it had become a huge success internationally. I used to play by the name "Mark 13" (biblical reference) that came from the cult movie Hardware. However, no one got the coolness of the name and everyone thought I was 13 years old ...
So I changed to Sadako based on the character from the movie Ringu. The "Dr" part in the beginning of my name was added by TL once I finished my PhD in Chemistry. :byebye:
I cannot actually fully remember how i got mine or how it came around.
I have been through a few incarnations such as "cavesheep" and i think i pld under "caveman" for a bit. unfortunatly the name "sheepy" was taken so my alias of sheepeh steped in. also under sheepet (as it sounded more feminin and my 2nd toon is a female human priest, also have sheepher (mage) sheeplock (lock strangely enough) sheepat (hunter) u can kinda see a theme here.

Lol, the hanger on my necklace is called Pendragon, wich in a long funny way revered to Richard wich is my name, though i never used that nickname for many games, i like Luminance way better, it was a name given by a old friend of mine.
My first wow charactar wasn't Lumi, cuz i didn't liked as a character name. I really couldn't find a cool name for my shaman (that i wanted) and when i selected aggramar (where my irl friends played), my eye cought the word Aszune, it sounded nice in my head, but it was taken, so i chanced it to Azune.
Then noob as i am "destroyed" the lightning bolt spell of my shaman when i was lvl 3, and i thoughed, crap that seems like a pretty good spell for when i'm higher lvl and i feared i destroyed it for good so i deleted the shaman (noob that i was) and made another orc shaman, but i wanted the name to be abit larger, so i chanced it to Azunemezal, wich was my main char for lots of months untill i got so utterly bored of wow.
After 2 months i couldn't bear not to play wow so decided i would play agian, but i felt that if i started with azune or alts i would be bored soon enough again, so i decided to quit aggramar (was hard cuz i made lots of friends there) but since 2 of my classmates and friends played on aszune, and since Bastet couldn't stop talking about this great guild he was in, i decided to totally chance things things. Wich lead to lumi, This time i was out of inspiration, and i thoughed heck why not use my name Luminance anyways. So thats my story :)
I have never shagged a sheep.
U ever been shagged by a sheeeeep then?
Not sure why, but when I was at university a few friends started calling me "mousey" all the time. A few years later I started playing online and resurrected that as an in-game name. I was Mouse for a bit, then started playing on a German TFC server and changed to Maus, then picked up DoD and decided to be Mouse as Allies, Maus as Axis ("bind k name [QRGR]Maus" or somesuch). I stayed as Mouse in CS until I got hooked on Natural Selection, where since the name "Mouse" was taken on the NS forums by one of the devs I picked Maus. I toyed with Souris (French) for a while, but Maus has stuck now for a few years.
However, I couldn't find a good Maus nick that hadn't been taken for BF2142, so it's time for a change -- Silverfish, in equal parts taken from the band (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Silverfish_%28band%29) of the same name and the first line of Iain Sinclair's Landor's Tower: "No flies, no flies on Billy Silverfish" -- Billy Silverfish was an old AIM username of mine.
Jesus that was tedious. I apologise if you read it all.
no i have never been involved in ANY such activity with ANY animals. (although some of the women ive been with were dogs)
Maus - were you at the "I" lan where there was a drunk guy walking around in a hawain shirt, gas mask and shooting ppl with a bb gun? (yes it was me, it seemed like a good idea at the time)
Also I was in the TV shot with QRGR when we were on GMTV!!!!!! behind noodles
No, I never made it to I-series, sadly. All the QRGR peeps gave me no end of grief for never going along ;)
I remember at my first Lan Doorman confronted me with the question : "Why exactly are you called GhostMjr"? This then provoked a long discussion about the meaning of each of our game names and how we began to be known by our call signs. My story starts back when i first got the internet, which is scarily quite a few years ago now. I played the tactical fps game Rainbow Six using a 56k modem with a few friends from school. I became part of their clan called |)óóM and played in a few leagues when i wasn't too busy. Inspired of course from the famous game we began to climb a few leaderboards but never took it too competitively. On joining i had to think of a suitable name. I chose ghost as at the time Ghost recon had I think just come out. As i knew the founding members i was promoted to the rank of Major, so i had my rank at the end of my name : |)óóM_Ghó$t*Mjr*. On applying to dmw after a year or so with [CIGS] I clipped my name to GhostMjr to make it easier to read, by the request of Mr Tealeaf. I was then known as GM by TL and a few other dmw members :D
Well I give you three chances to guess how I got my "online" name...
Short story: My first name is Sebastiaan, which I and many others find waaaay too long to write every time so I shorten it almost always to Sebas, and tadaa there's my WoW name.
Used in WC3 names like Shadow-0f-Death, or Shadowsfury, but they didnt last more than one game due to not being able to use '-' in WoW. And the lazy dude that I am, I just named my Dorf after me. (And no I dont look like a dorf in RL!)
My Warrior alt has a funny name though for all Swedish chaps over here. His name is Solkram which was a name that popped into me when I created him and it turned out that it means suncream in Swedish <_<
So... WTB decent online name! Ill give 2g! :narnar:
Lets see:
lunares: is 2 words in 1.
namingly luna which means moon. this was chosen cause the night elves (the race i play) have a religion based on the moon goddes elune.
res comes from the spell ressurrection.the class i play is a priest and they can ressurect ppl. hence lunares was formed
Lunares
Quote from: sheepy;153169no i have never been involved in ANY such activity with ANY animals. (although some of the women ive been with were dogs)
u wish :P
@ luna,
so ur the one ressing the moon all the time? :P
When my son, Nik (aka FrEnZy! here abouts) got me hooked on FPS and early CS in particular he said I needed a handle. Did he suggest 'H3dSh0t KiLaH' or maybe 'GuNDeAtH D3Str0Yer'? No he didn't (good lad  ). Instead, he said it would be cool to call myself by the name he'd been calling me ever since he grew out of calling me 'Dadda'.
So Oldbloke it is - Oldie if shortened. :flirty:
Useless crap enters my head and i use it
Seeing the amount of new members the dMw have been getting, I thought it might be nice for people to come forward and simply explaine their names. Also, if this has been done before, instead of mocking me for not finding the correspondent thread, make yourselves usefull and link to them instead :D

For me:
My original name, Pendragon is twofold:
Firstly, I wrote my thesis on Roman Britain andthe Romano-British. Uther Pendragron kept popping up in various legends and folk-lore and I always liked it as a name
Secondly, a good friend died in a motorbike accident and the last time I had spoke to him he was at the PENDRAGON Festival in Wales, so it seemed fitting.
My lastest incarnation, Penfold, is what Tealeaf kept calling me a couple of LAN's ago, and at the time I was thinking that I should have a name change. I went with PENFOLD as I used to love that little chubby hamster fella on Dangermouse and, best of all, it can still be shortened to PEN which is what most people call me.
PEN
PS. Penfold is also a rather nice New World wine I'm rather partial too :)
Well, I picked EternalUk because I like the name and I wouldn't like to live forever.( And Uk, Because that's where I live. ) yet in Css, living and completing the objective, and you have to be the last one alive to complete the objective. /That may be because after a while, you would get bored../
I used to go for the name Fastcut or SpudGun, ( As in potato gun ) but I then developed a liking for names such as Dark-Killer and XDarkX.
Soon afterwards, I realised that they didn't really suit my style of play /the way I played games./ So I tryed diffrent names.
And that's really it.
And that is the story about how I became to be known as" ÉtérnalÚk "
Well erm, i was named it hehe. It's funny actually, before i joined dMw i'd always used other names and got a bit bored of them for a while and thought id try Lee while i wasn't in a clan, i just kept it as my name in the clan too, to avoid confusion.

happend when i played unreal tournament, and all the names i wanted where taken. it started as ronvra but didnt like that (dont ask me why the a is there.) then later on in madol of honor i chances it to noevra, and stick with it.
not mutch to it. but its a name nobady use, so i always can pick this name, without putting a 1000 numbers behind it.:crying:
Quote from: DuVeL;152936I got the name DuVeL a while back now, it used to be da_Shadow back in my Atari days.
Unfortunatly I couldn't get DuVeL in BF2142 so I had to make it like this: DuVeL_NL ...:sideways:

My story is a simple one.
Once upon a time i had a really crap p1 133mhz which to get the hdd to boot you had to physically hit the side of the computer and then a long drone would start meaning the pc was at last booting.
Anyway cut a long story short i was friends with some people who got into rainbow six.
Remember that game?
Well we created a rank structure and as i was really into it decided to go for Ghost.
My rank was of Mjr and so i was named Ghost*Mjr*.
I then removed the stars after removing the unnecessary stars and here i am today.
So whats your story?
The 1st game that I took any interest in the online multiplayer side of it was Aliens vs Predator, I ended up using a program called MPlayer which was a chat room & game launcher type thing, when I came to register on it every name that I could think of to use was taken, the night before down the pub we'd had a random drunken conversation about what would make good p*** take cover bands & one that came up was Limp Wristed for Limp Bizkit (we where quite drunk) so I tried that & it worked.
Various versions & spellings over the years have ended up with this, I'm pretty sure I was the original RizZy as searches never turned up anyone else using the name.
i have 2 gaming names
1st one is canaryworf, in the very early 90's, 7 mates and myself used to play Geoff Cramond's GP1, where as you could "serial" link 2 pc's together and using a playing sharing technique. You did say 10 laps then the comp would take over your car and run it to your next stint at the pace of the last lap you drove, so we used to have the laps set to 80 so everyone could get 2 stints each. Anyway we were all drawn into teams of 2 and then allowed to paint our team colours. my team mate did all the designs and the car was various shades of yellow, to which i replied im going to look like a canary driving that so i said that is what my drivers going to be called, to which some relied why not canary wharf, but spelt canary worf. I said cool but i got rid of the space in between. still use the name for certain games
2. sulky...easy one this my last name is o sullivan,,,,which in work is either sully or if im in the poop or bad mood ppl call me sulky
When i was a young'un, my Parents would always call me Jimbo instead of James and as i grew up and started gaming, i decided to keep with the Jimbo tradition from my parents (My dad is also a gamer) but as i got older Jimbo started to sound like a kiddy name so i shortened it down to Jim, which i now use for pretty much all games where i can... As well as prefering to be called Jim instead of James now as well :)
Mine is a nickname I have at uni. My name is Tim in real life and on my physics course there were 4 Tims, plus a few others I knew around uni on other courses, so I had a whole range of nicknames. My Norwegian friend called me Trym as was different and caught on with her housemates who I hung out with a lot, and my physics friends gave everyone ridiculous nick names. There was one guy called Turkey just because he looked slightly Turkish. Anyone one day I get named T-Bone as one of a whole series of names I'd been given that didn't stick and someone misheard and loudly asked "Why are you calling him T-Bag?" and that was enough to get it to stick.
That birthday in lectures I had dozens of tea bags thrown at me, other people on campus were wondering why the place was covered in pyramid bags, and now you know.
I still use Trym for my MSN name, and have T-Bag in the middle of my facebook name. So naturally when I was thinking of a name to game with I went with T-Bag.
I just KNOW there is a post here somewhere... 3 years back or so... where we all spill the guts on our names, but I can't find it :|
Anyhoo, mine came about when I was making music in a huge two-man band starting in 1994. We made acoustic/electronic music that was dreadfully sad, and with elanvital roughly meaning giving life, I figured the d in front would make it mean the opposite... that was pretty cool until l'oreal made el'vital, which apparently everyone would mention when they heard my gaming name. Shortening it to delan made turkish men very interested in me, figuring I was a middle-eastern female. Making it shorter to del has worked the best, albeit with the obvious addition of delboy of which human tormentors like The Big Man Zootoxin has been an avid user.
I like delanvital because it makes me almost unique on the net - I think there are 1-2 others - something I have come to reconsider with facebook's creation etc. and whether it should be possible to link a gaming name to real life name - thus me removing all references to my real life name in all older posts here on dMw. Voila!
Oh the shame of this ....... First clan I joined was the Hellfire Squad playing X-Wing vs Tie-Fighter.
I had to sign up so being the very creative person I am I cam up with my best spelling of Tobious, but around that time watched a film that had the "Rev" which would sight some passage from Bible before battle. I decided I liked this and not very religious I went more towards the Monks.
Thus BrotherTobious I became and I am too lazy to every change it :)
Well as a kid I was fan of MTG (quited only recently) and I used the name Masticore a lot, after my favorite card. Later with The Matrix my friend took the name Mr.Wizard a nickname of one of the movie side charactars, so I took on Morpheus for a little while. (Originality wasn't my strongest point back then). I grew bored of these names pretty quickly as "everyone" seemed to be nicknaming themselves like that.
I then started playing Hattrick, an online soccer managing game, and decided it would be Wolveman from now on (Wolfman I didn't like, nor Wolvesman).
However with WoW I needed a new one for my Shaman (horde - aggramar) and I made up a name: Azunemezal a degradation of the server Aszune, (I liked Aszune as a name) and Mezal means friend in some language I forgot :(
Basically it meant Friends of Azune or Friends with Azune (or Azsune) which is typical as its the server I play on today :)
I used the Azune theme for a while as people started to recognise me by it but after our raiding guild disbanded and none of my irl friends played on that server anymore, WoW grew dull and so I quit WoW.
Now, on to the main story :P After overhearing 2 fellow students about this game they were playing, I recognized it as WoW and we started talking about it more and more. One of them nicknamed Bastet kept telling about this great guild on Silver Oak Guardians, which were busy with hardcore raiding, without the hardcore demands (no 24/7 raiding or preparing for them) and how much fun they where having while doing it. Especially the fun part made me want to join them, as thats what I missed on Aggramar after the big guild disband. So I decided to rejoin WoW, completely the opposite of what I was doing, no more male orc caster but a female nightelf meelee (I found the general movements and fighting moves to gay for my taste, especially when handling the bow, there was no way someone could fire an arrow like that :P)
Anyhow, I needed a new name, and as I always like the elemental side of the shaman and the blue lightning you saw a lot with fanart, on top of that, I heard rogues had this skill blind so I imagined a great flash or something, so I decided I wanted a name with a light or lightning theme, so I took on Luminance.
Even after SoG disbanded and I quited WoW once again, I stayed with deadmen thanks to CS:S. Also because I very much liked my flashbangs back then, I kept using my nickname Luminance.
Ofc I rejoined, quit and Rejoined WoW again (Like many others) I kept using the Lumi theme, mainly thanks to the lazy people who kept shortening it to Lumi. All my charactars I frequently play with, start with Lumi now and even some my friends call my Lumi irl, so I doubt I'll ever change it again, its just a part of me now.

Pen,
Any chance we can merge all the topics and put them somewhere on the forum as a sticked thread?
Hm, I am adopted, from South-Korea. So, my Korean name is Kim Soon Jung. It doesnt take an Einstein or Isaac Newton to figure out where I got my gaming name then ;)
Besides, I started out as Elenionet in WoW, which no one could pronounce, so I got the nickname Elly. But come on? Elly would be a weird name in a FPS game, its too girlish! :D
So I took my real Korean name as I was given there. Plus, it means something to me :)
All 4 threads merged into one gargatuan thread!
I refer the honourable gentlemen to the post made some years ago....
Quote from: TeaLeaf;153093TeaLeaf started as [TEA]_Leaf in CS as a joke name - I had the idea of getting a group of casual gamer friends together to set up a joke clan and all play using the [TEA] clan name, my name was [TEA]_Leaf.
TL.
WD that TL.
Mine is LionHeart cos I hate Moslems. No Seriously, I played in a lot of European matches with UT and wanted a name of someone that had led a winning crusade across many lands. King Richard just seemed to fit the bill
Previous to that I was soldierblue after the 1974 film about the rape of the American Indians. Which was also my CB handle back in the day....
Quote from: Ninja_Freak;152980I'm a Ninja. Also, I'm a Freak in the classic RPG sense of the name.
what he said back in Sept 06
My name is Leon, it sounds like Lion.
Have a thing for Russian names since coming across the serbian name Anton Slavic whilst playing Tiberium Sun back in 1998 (one of the first games i played) and when i first joined WoW (other MMo's before had auto generated names and i just stuck with them) i attempted to use Slavic as my warriors name however it was taken by some fat gnome (whome i have subsequantly assasinated) so i messed around with the name coming up with vladic as vlasic simply sounded like some sort of medical condition. ever since then ive jsut stuck with the russian theme'd name etc
I used to be Nevyn (from Katheryn Kerr's Deverry cycle) on GameSpy in Quake 2, Mech Warrior, but that name got pinched by others, so they I went for Arithon after the main character in Janny Wurts "Wars of Light and Shadow" (a good read) and i've stuck with it. I used it online for Quake 3, Medal of Honour Allied Assault and Call of Duty (1), then BF2 and BF: Vietnam and BF2142 after which somebody hijacked the name in BF:BC2 so I had to go with ArithonUK, but since my Origin account was taken from "ye olde EA account" I got my Arithon name back "All hail Origin!"!!
You have probably guessed from my choice of gaming names, I read a lot. I met Janny Wurts in 2003 and she gave me a print of one of her paintings of Arithon (she's also an artist).
becase fightingforhonour and AJust cause were taken in bc2 i had a mini brain wave and realised i used to watch wacky races on cartoon network and i always liked the baddie, DickDastardly
DD, is your alt character named Muttley?
Mine is a result of being a pretentious ******* who also happened to have a bit of luck with the shotgun in CS (waaaay back in the Beta 5.2 days). At a lan, someone accused me of having sold my soul to the devil for my shotgun. Granted, that was after seven kills in two rounds in a 4v4 (the only thing stopping me was our sniper being a bit triggerhappy and blowing me away with the AWP :p).
Having just read Göethe's version of Faust, the new nick was sort of a given.
Later I added the year of birth, seeing as how there's a million people calling themselves Faust.
Wish I was still that good with the shotgun...

You were never that good with a shotgun it's all lies.
A long time ago, my first game name was called RedAndRaw, this was because I came back from Tescos with some mince not too long ago before I made the name based on that - eventually as I matured I realised it wasn't the most appropriate of names.
My name's Tom/Tommy, the Thompson WWII sub-machinegun was called a tommy-gun, named myself TommyGuner because some other rascal had already taken one with the extra 'n'.
Stuck with the name when I found myself to be somewhat decent in CS and the original Planetside when I used the name :)
EDIT: My nick is now.. over 20 years old...
I actually started this thread once upon a time, but I never told anyone why I have (a somewhat lame) nick.... well, it is time to get the truth on the table.
Back in the early -90s, I played a lot of flight sims (nowadays I play the DCS a10). In the city where I studiet, there was a competition in a gaming community. THere was lots of games to compete in, but I chose to play the Gunship sim. We played all day and the better of the night. The objective was to have the best score of all, in 25 missions. Of course, this meant actually surviving 25 (or was it 50) missions. I didn't win, but I got a pretty cool award. The diploma is lost, but I still remember that moment with pride. I finished all 25 missions completed without "dying" in the game. The only problem was, I got shot down in every one of them on the way back to base. I never landed on the base. Not once. Every mission ended with an autorotation :D In the end, some guys actually asked me to take off, fly the chopper and then cut the engines to show the how to autorotate. A basic landing, i didn't do once.
One of the guys then used an expression that said something like, you have a steady hand, real cool. And there it is....
So, lame, yes. Cool? Maybe not. A story behind the nick ? Yes! And the avatar to show.

My original nick was Avenger, and I have no idea how that came out; unfortunately it's quite common and rarely available. Also used Lestat during covert Freelancer server takeovers/blockades, last time it was used the Elite clan bit the dust; that was quite some time ago.
Bring life into a old forum thread. i got my name back when i started my Xbox 360 account which was 8-9 years ago now i believe it was to play halo 3 with my best friend so that i could stop going round there and using the good old guest account. I wanted a simple name and a birth year just like he had done but i liked my own name for some reason it was going to be taylor1994, but some one had taken it so needed something else, and the first Xbox suggestion was RogueTaylor1994, form there it has stuck with me in most things i take the last name off, but enjoy the name rogue alone. its a name that i stand by , the way i hear the word is unknown a dashing rogue is person your never quiet sure what they are going to do, shake you hand and smile or just turn and walk away to there own devices, but i always feel like i am fighting the name and i like it. i am always a goodie goodie but enjoy the idea of doing something right like saving a person in game but never getting credit or anything for it, i think its a good way to be a rogue someone who helps but doesn't get noticed for doing it, like real life in a way i enjoy being the person who doesn't get noticed, i never do anything wrong but i like not being noticed haha like a true gaming nerd but i don't have a bat cave :flirty: . i enjoy being a rogue, this got a little long winded i a sorry to say but if you read this thanks :) means a lot and just thought i would post anyway.
mine goes back to when i originally beta tested xbox live back when it was just xbox that big blck and green thing that looked like a video player
i was looking for a gamertag the had the word tiger in it cause i've always liked tigers, and the words sneaky and tiger were available, and the rest is history.
My first was w4rped from playing Quake when it was cool to have a number in your name making you more 1337 ¬_¬
DannagE I got from playing Carmageddon where the main character is called Max Damage. Originally I changed it to Max Dannage, a play on my name (Dan) but eventually changed it fully to DannagE. Again just a big E as it just looked balanced. Now there are 100's of dannage's on the net and I struggle to reg my nick name if I don't get on there quickly! :(
Ever seen the film 'Sniper' with Tom Berringer in?
My dad let me watch it when I was very young, I mean 5-6 years old maybe earlier? My mum freaked out over it, even though I had watched Terminator by that age mind! So I still do not know what all the fuss was over.
Despite the ensuing argument I absolutely loved the film and I still have it on that very same VHS (I have the DVD copy now too!)
Anyway Tom Berringer plays Thomas Beckett a US Marine Sniper. The character stuck with in my mind since watching it and was the inspiration for my username and I have used it ever since I first signed up to Xbox live back on Christmas 2007 (the year halo 3 came out.)
It has somewhat defined me as a person. Some people even refer to me as Beckett outside of gaming who have no affiliation with my gaming habits.... spooky...
Never seen this thread before, anyway mine is pretty simples. I have had this nick since I was around 14 or so, when I first started playing online, around the time Half-life came out and a friend let me borrow his copy. Loved Universal soldier as a teen (still do!) so it stems from that. Universal soldier is pretty long and always being on IRC meant I would never use the whole thing. It got shortened to unisoldier, unisol, then just uni, has to be a small u as well, seeing it capitalised looks very weird to me after using it for so long. Also, it's super annoying having IRC ping me when someone was talking about uni(versity).
When i joined steam and needed a nickname i was reading the Wheel of Time series. One character was mazrim and so i just shortened it and now it's easier to keep it rather than change it.
All your stories are much better than mine :D
I started with "megamaker2000" when I was about four years old because I was playing some online Lego game and I could barely managed to put the word "mega" and "maker" together - Pretty sure TL helped me with that one. I then switched to "The Dexterous Megamaker" because I joined a steam group where having "The Dexterous" in front of your name was a sort of unspoken rule. I then changed it to "The Dexterous Shadow" after being told by friends that I was too sneaky + by this point "Megamaker" sounded too childish. The obvious progression from that seemed to be Dexterous so I simply shortened it to that.
Where do these threads come from, never saw it as well :D
My nickname started when I was nearly 20. Used to play lots of quake and needed an online name. I liked the look of the first Max Payne character, but changed it to MaxPain for obvious reasons :D Then very soon after that I thought its too long and just childish and shortened it to main MAxpaIN which suits me very well :D
Fun to see how people got to their nicknames :D
Apparently I first posted in this (combined) thread almost a decade ago (http://www.deadmen.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?10690-How-did-you-choose-your-online-gaming-name&p=152949&viewfull=1#post152949)
I guess I earned the suicidal part back again
Due to my surname being Jewell I've been nicknamed Jewellsy since I was about 6 years old. Literally only Family and work call me by my real name. Naturally Jewellsy gets shortened to Jewelz and well here I am, take yer pic.

I live in a town called Ryhope so I am a Ryhoper, I added a 1 on the end so I had enough characters to create my AOL email address.
Over the years it gradually got shortened down to Ryh
