I know it is difficult to answer questions like this, but I'll give it a shot anyway.
I have been playing BF2 since july, and I've had almost no lag problems/graphical stutters.
When we played against the KOD-guys, I experienced a lot of lag and in-game graphical stutters. I turned off teamspeak and Zonealarm, returned to the game, and found it better but not perfect. This has not stopped since...
Now, I have changed nothing in my system, no new installs, no new hardware.
Any tips?
My system:
AMD Athlon 64 3000+ 2.0 GHz
2 X Crucial PC3200 DDR-DIMM 512MB CL3 5ns
Asus K8N-E DELUXE Motherboard Socket 754 (I use the onboard sound card and the onboard network card)
1500/1000 Cable ADSL connection
Linksys BEFSR41 Router
Windows XP Pro
nVidia GeForce 6800 AGP - 128 MB
I turn off Zonealarm and I don't run teamspeak.
The game suffers from small stutters, most noticeable when I move fast (running, flying choppers, driving jeeps).
Heeeelp!
Use pingplotter and check your connection to the server. Best thing to do is wait a week because then our new shiny server will be active. If you want to check your ping now the techies might see if your connection is the problem.

OK. Thanx.
I'll have to wait until this evening, since I am at work right now.
Didn't you have some lag problems? Or was it Delanvital?

I'm still not playing BF2. Hopefully my new Gcard will be installed Friday or over the weekend, otherwise after the LAN.
I don't have alot of lag on English servers...
As others have said, check your connection first.
We all know BF2 is a memory hog, and will page disk virtual memory when you 'only' have 1GB or RAM. Some things to consider:
- Check your graphical settings aren't set too High. I have a 6800GT graphics card and set most things to Medium.
- Check your Virtual Memory is set to minimum 1.5 times your physical memory (i.e. 1.5 x 1GB RAM = 1536MB virtual).
- Defrag your hard disk.
- Try killing off any unnecessary processes before running BF2.
Another thing, I've heard that F@H might give problems aswell but I'm not sure about that..

Can't agree with this one enough...
I went through a period of jerky play which I put down to 'lag'...
It wasn't - I defragged my hard-drive and the play smoothed out.

I run BF2 off a separate partition... but I just noticed my C partition (containing XP and all other programs except games) needs to be defragged.
I'll go ahead and defrag both drives, just to be sure.
Thanx again for all the tips, guys. Since BF2 has worked smoothly before, I know I will eventually get it right.
I've read a couple of posts saying that lag and jerkiness dissappears with more memory. I have a good deal on a 1 gig memory chip... Even if it doesn't improve performance, memory is always a good thing :D

Hmmm.. I think I might set this one up on my Frankenstein machine. Frankestein is a name I made up, as it is made of thrown away computer parts I found at the shopping mall. I use it mainly for P2P and email.
Yes, I do kill the machines internet connection when playing BF2.

I uped to 2 gig RAM - and this was a huge improvement - not least in the fact that I am usually first in when the game starts. I used to be LAST in, which meant I could never play Squad Leader (which I like to do).
Another thing I am lookin into is having a two drive, duel boot machine - with my work stuff and OS on one drive and JUST my game stuff and a lean OS on the other, with the option to boot to either at start-up.
This is importnant - especially, if like me, you have your kids using your PC too.

Thats how my machine is now setup. All that is on the gaming OS is BF2 and steam(no games installed yet). It removes the temptation for jumping on a server for a 20 minutes work break. (they usual end up lasting a couple of hours).
I would really like to get an image of the gaming one incase of any hdd failures etc.

Imaging! Something I have no idea about - is there anyone who can give a tutorial?
(I am basically a 'Mac Boy' - and imaging is dead easy - but it's a mystery to me on the PC.)
:(

LOL - nothing wrong with a polite diversion - and anyway, imaging is on topic!
:)
I think wiping your drive completely and reapplying a clean image is a good way to keep that drive crisp, clean and lean!
Which means less 'judders' - even defragging stops being effective after so long.
I have stutters once in a while in the game, well real lag, and when I have them I asked a few times if other did as well - and they did. So perhaps it is the load in the server or something...? Or I might be rambling :)

The server is being replaced...let's reserve judgement on the lag once that has happened? ;)

OK, OK, I've read the tutorial, and I think I can interpret the data.
I have no packet loss, and average round trip time of 174. I will be running the plotter for a little while. I think I'll let it run for an hour or so. This should cover my usual gaming time.
I am beginning to think it is not my connection.
I've defragged the harddrive, and the paging file is about 1,5 of memory (minimum - it is computer controlled), cleaned the registry.
I'll get on the server later this evening (in about one hour) and check things out.

You let the pingplotter go yeah? If I'm correct it made a file some where on your computer. Search the file...Press Print Screen, host it somewhere or send it to someone who could host it for you (I'd do it, just send it to:
timmermanpeter AT hotmail.com). Then the fellas like TL and BB can read it and can see at which hop from server to server or connection to connection where it goes wrong.

Yeah, I have no place to host. Yet.
My new ISP will provide me with a place to host, but for now I haven't had time to put the site up.
Thanx.
Here's Coolhands pingplotter result:

Don't know if anyone is still following this thread, but here goes:
I defragged my drive, killed some unneccessary services, killed Zonealarm, put graphics dowm to medium. Everything worked fine.
Now I've put graåhics up to high (on terrain, textures and effects, rest is still on medium), keeps Zonealarm running. The game is a bit choppy the first ten - fifteen seconds into a new map, and after that it is OK.
I did configure my router so that it gives priority to any traffic initiated to or from BF2.
Works like a charm. I'm back!!! :D
