Basically, with no way of playing multiplayer, I want a really decent FPS single player but with loads of replay value.
And something that isn't the standard alien invasion/undead zombies etc MY favourite recent fps was the first few levels of FarCry when you're fighting the mercenaries. Anything along those lines, i.e. a bit of a thinking FPS, would be good. I also really enjoyed Battlefield 2, Deus Ex and Project IGI. Any suggestions, or shall I just wait until the Godfather computer game is released?
EDIT: There's no rush, I won't be buying it for a while as still in the thralls and lack of money of freshers fortnight
I was going to suggest Deus X but looks like you've already played it. Haven't seen anything else catch my eye yet im afraid. Half life source was supposed to be my next play and play and play game but it sucked.
What was the verdict on Deus Ex 2? Worthwhile addition or just a graphical update?
I cant remember which one it was i got. The story line involved a helicopter a lot? either way it was worth it. If your at the lan i'll bring it along.
Have you tried "Vietcong" or "Vietcong: Purple Haze" (which includes the "Fist Alpha" expansion pack)?

New graphics, new menu system, new bio mods, new story line, but imho sucked the big one. :(
Hold up and wait for F.E.A.R. The demo was a bit generic, but from the previews it looks like it'll be a fun and sort of thinking-y shooter. Release date is set for 18th Oct in the US, no idea of the UK date (actually, I just looked it up and it's 21st Oct).

In the meantime, about the only other fairly recent "thinking" FPS game that comes to mind is Raven Shield, but that's not strictly speaking a FPS, nor is it especially recent. Hmm, I guess SWAT 4 is more recent, and worth a look too.
The hardest FPS I ever played was Chrome which I think you can get pretty cheaply nowadays. If you want longevity then thats your boy IMHO
Deus X 2 was crap.
FPS's with 'monsters' are crap, FPS's set in WW2 are crap.
I can only say keep playing FarCry with the mercs, until it gets to the obligatory 'We've run out of ides, lets bring in the genetically modified monsters and add a few dark bits' bit.
I'd dearly love someone to correct me.

Agreed, although i played the x-box version so i dunno if it was different.
The multi-ending was a con. What you did through the game didnt matter as you could still choose which side to go right at the end.
Hmm, so at the mo it's looking like I should go for Chrome then. Was Operation Flashpoint any good as a single player game?
I enjoyed it. :D
Yeah, OFP was good. maybe a little bit dated graphically but the gameplay was good and some of the levels were pretty hard.
COD 2's meant to be good when it comes out?
Oh and I've seen really mixed reviews on Chrome BB, so really not sure....
I reckon that hunter game - the one set around chernobyl or something, looks like it'll be a good 'un.
Aye, that did sound alright unti lthey decided to make it -

Anyone remember Hunter on the Amiga?
You mean Stalker - Shadow of Chernobyl? Yep it has indeed taken that route as this commmunity site (http://stalker.myexp.de/en/index.php?site=monsters.php) shows :(
Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory. Any good? Equally the Rogue Spear series as well, anyone like?

Stand corrected.....COD is where the action is......unless of course you are staying at the other hotel where Claire works!! :dribble: :D
(1) Stalker was always about mutants
(2) Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory is probably the best of the three, but not really a FPS, and entirely linear. A lot of people hate how linear the games are, but personally I love the SC series. Grab the demo (which is of the first mission) - it'll show you much of what to expect, though later levels involve a little more action, and more fun high-tech locations.
(3) Rogue Spear was good - a whole bunch better than R6, but why not go for Raven Shield instead?
edit: on the subject of Splinter Cell, the first game is very good indeed, and I'm pretty sure I saw it out on budget with the bonus mission disc just before I moved away from the UK, so that one's worth checking out. The CIA mission alone is worth the asking price.
Further edit, on the subject of cheap-but necessary games: I believe both Serious Sam games are now available for a fiver. I'll not try to say they have any real depth, but they sure are a lot of fun, especially some of the crazy things that happen in Second Encounter (having a shootout with a horde of enemies in a room full of trampolines, anyone?).
See that trunk back there, well here I am out on a limb. CoD was no better in my opinion than MoH. At least MoH set a standard, CoD fell into line like the rest of the tat that swamps the industry at the moment.
An original and interesting FPS....I live in hope. Far Cry, under-rated, but then they decided
