We had the opportunity to run our new server, BlackAdder3, at LAN VIII and it performed in an exemplary fashion.
During our BF2 competition we had 36 people in game and the maximum CPU utilisation was 7% (as people loaded into the map) and averaged 3-4% during the game play. With 20 people the server ran at about 2-3% utlisation. In addition it was reported that map change times were reduced. Looks like it will do a great job for us when it is in the rack.
The server needs to be properly configured before we take it down to London, but we'll keep you posted as to when it will be installed. Hopefully this will be within the next month.
TL.
What he's NOT telling you is that every night he would take Blackadder from the gaming room and tuck it up in his bed with him.
Methinks that's TL's a little fixated on our latest acquisition :P
Seriously though BA3 is sweet. I have to admit I didn't understand too much when it got to the "4 Gig dual-core Opteron" bit but it did a sublime job handling BF with so many people.
If anything it was the switches that couldn't cope ;)

We did have a couple of hardware failures which led to some not ideal routing at the LAN. One Cisco switch failed the night before the LAN and the other two main Cisco switches wouldn't talk to each other for some reason, so we ended up routing all the traffic via another non-Cisco switch. At the end of the day thought I didn't see any loss or choke on the network, but pings were slightly higher than I would have expected - not that they caused any noticeable difference in gameplay.
Benny has donated his Cisco switch to the dMw community and I now hold another 24 port Cisco switch belonging to Tugs (who is due to move out to Atlanta (GA) later this month). One of the things on my list of 'would like to do different' for the next LAN would be to have sufficient switch gear tested and running before the LAN to avoid similar 'on the day' problems. We may need to acquire a couple more switches before the next LAN and some further thought is being given to our options in this respect.
The biggest network bandwidth use by far though is still the non-gaming traffic.
TL.
There were no problems with game play though, so I don't think there is anything to worry about on that front. Two or three clan owned decent switches would be nice, perhaps second hand ciscos?
It's under consideration at the moment.
TL.
Any idea when Blackadder 3 will be in position ......????
I have been holding back a little on the ed matches ...so we can use the new shiney server !!

Actually my comment was fairly tongue-in-cheek as I didn't know we had a problem until TL and I were chatting whilst waiting for the hard-core gamers to pack up....
And even if I did realise, I didn't know what a switch was until I got a "Switch 101" lesson from TL.

Sorry but it will be a while yet. I'll update you when I have more info.
In the meantime, don't hold back on matches. I can tweak the server to give Baldric more of the share of resources which should make your matches lag-free.
erm.....ya must think I'm being a bit of a pain but ......any news yet ?
this is to try and stop the sort of comments being posted on ed that happened with last Sundays match
:(
Hi Mad, I was going to post something tonight anyway, but ya beat me to it.
We didn't get a chance to get config the server for the rack before I went on holiday (immediately after the LAN) and when I got back Oldie went on hols too! Oldie gets back from his hols this weekend (I think) and as soon as he is back we (Oldie, Gandalf and me) will be booking a date in the diary to take the server to London for installation in the server facility.
I would estimate this will be within the next month, but I need to speak to Oldie, Gandalf and Hi-V to confirm everyone's availability. We'll be trying to get the server in the rack at the earliest opportunity, so ideally you'll see the new server performance sooner rather than later.
TL.
Thnx TL
:)
I'm back. Let the arranging begin :)
Any news on when the new server will be on line yet guys ..... :(
Not meaning to be pushy !!

Hey MAD. Oldie alluded to a date of 10th Dec for the server installation in this post (http://forum.deadmen.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=11723&view=findpost&p=105587) buried in the Battlefield2 forum.
ah cheers Cadaver ...dont read those BF2 ones .....

Didn't think anyone had mentioned anything publicly yet which is why I didn't want to get your hopes up. ;)
Yes TL and Gandy are looking at doing the install on 10 Dec but it still needs to be completely confirmed with our good hosts :)
yes, 10th of december is the date that we are planning to go to london to install the server.
