Title: BF2 problem
Post by: DuVeL on October 12, 2005, 07:24:38 PM
Hi guys, I've installed BF2 and now when I select the game it starts with the BF2 logo and when it loads a bit it suddenly crashes to my desktop again. Any suggestions what to do?

Are you all patched up?

Hard drive defragged,de-crapped etc?

What graphics card are you running Duvel?

Complete fresh install of XP and all it's patches.
Card: MEDION RADEON 9600 TX

Do I have to download the patches myself?

9Slice had slightly similar problems at the LAN...

Tea Leaf suggested that it was his Windows Firewall causing the problem and sure enough, after adjustment, BF2 loaded properly.

I am afraid - being a Mac person - I don't know how the Windows Firewall must be adjusted to accomodate BF2, but I would guess it would mean openning some ports which BF2 uses.

Make sure your card/monitor can allow 800x600 @60Hz to run. Reason being is that BF2 must start at this res/refresh rate the first time it starts.

eg make sure you are not using any refresh force software when you start it the first time :)

There are 3 patches. I doubt not having them installed would cause the crashing, just unable to connect to servers

Allready set my monitor and so on 800x600.
I'm also allready downloading CounterStrike: Condition zero, will let that finish first before installing all the patches and so.
WindowsFirewall is down aswell.

I hope it'll work out... :dummy:

Make sure nothing is overclocked and that memory settings are allocated in BIOS using SPD. Additionally, if your graphics card uses a 4pin molex power connector in addition to the power from the AGP slot then make sure nothing else is using the same power rail.

Can you run 3D mark OK or any other games for that matter?

  Remember, I'm not a computertechy  ;)
I didn't overclock a thing. I've tryed a game of CS:CZ and it worked fine.
Now I'm off searching for that 3D mark thing.

I've posted this also on the |TG|forum and got a reply that it could be my drivers...
I'm allready checking This site for them (https://support.ati.com/ics/support/default.asp?deptID=894&task=knowledge&folderID=27)

The only other thing that comes to mind is to delete the cache files in your BF2 folder and let BF2 recreate them. The files will be in the following location:

C:\Documents and Settings\\My Documents\Battlefield 2\mods\bf2\cache\

where is replaced with your xp user name

Delete all folders in that location - they will be recreated when BF2 starts.

I have had the black screen crash on a couple of games, including BF2. I reinstalled  windows and it seemed to fix it. I guess because I used different graphics card drivers

Mhhmmzzz, okay...
Tomorrow I've got some more time to check it all out.
Here's a complete list of what I've tryed so far:

-Installed BF2;
-Installed all 3 patches;
-Installed latest Graphicscard (a MEDION RADEON 9600 TX) drivers;
-Stopped the Windows Firewall and AntiVirus and all other programs that might give a problem;
-Set my card/monitor on 800x600 @60 Hz because I've heard that BF2 must start at this res/refresh rate the first time it starts.

Now when I start up BF2, I get the first screen, it looks like it's loading and then it just crashes and restarts my computer.

I also got these suggestions:
*Make sure nothing is overclocked and that memory settings are allocated in BIOS using SPD. Additionally, if your graphics card uses a 4pin molex power connector in addition to the power from the AGP slot then make sure nothing else is using the same power rail.
*Can you run 3D mark OK or any other games for that matter?
*The only other thing that comes to mind is to delete the cache files in your BF2 folder and let BF2 recreate them. The files will be in the following location:
C:\Documents and Settings\\My Documents\Battlefield 2\mods\bf2\cache\
where is replaced with your xp user name
Delete all folders in that location - they will be recreated when BF2 starts.

Anymore suggestions? The last suggestion I got is reinstall windows.

I think the patches are cumulative, so you can settle for just 1.03.

Can you play other games?

Yep, it's still in as we type. Had it in during the patches and stuff aswell.
I firstly wanted to install the game and get it to work and after that try the No-CDstuff.

Sorry but worth checking these things ;)

Have a look at the first of the two links posted by delanvital. There is a lot of troubleshooting stuff in there.

I had a look through the readme file for BF2 and all it says is:

QuoteVIDEO CARDS

- It is highly recommended to go to your video card manufacturer's
website and download updated drivers for your card. For your
convenience the addresses are listed here:

 ATI:     http://ati.com/support/driver.html (http://ati.com/support/driver.html)
 Nvidia:    http://nvidia.com/content/drivers/drivers.asp (http://nvidia.com/content/drivers/drivers.asp)

- DXT TEXTURE SUPPORT
Disabling DXT Texture Support on ATI Video Cards can result in
 Battlefield 2 failing to start.
We recommend DXT Texture Support is enabled.

- CHANGING DISPLAY MODE
Occasionally on some video cards you may be allowed to set the
display mode to one not supported by your computer. This will result
in a black screen being shown. To remedy this use the Windows
Explorer to find and delete the directory:

    \My Documents\Battlefield 2\Profiles\

This will reset your game to the default settings. You can
now start the game, retrieve or create a new profile, and re-adjust
the settings using the Menu as normal.

Note the line about DXT texture support. I assume that will be in display properties somewhere.

What is the screen you see when you start up, before it crashes? Is it a video intro or do you make it to the logon window? Past that perhaps?

Try and unload all you can, both anti-virus, firewall and whatever you may have in your traybar etc.

How much RAM do you have in the machine?

When I first arrived at the lan i had this problem so i re-installed BF2 and installed the patch, but this didn't appear to solve the problem. Then snooks (i think) suggested deleting the old profiles folder in my documents (left over from the original installation) and this solved the problem. The folder was called "Battlefield 2" and is located in the default "my documents" folder. I simply renamed it "Battlefield 1" as i didn't want to delete my screenshots etc and voila!!!!

hope this helps.

About the corrupt sound driver - I had the same thing when I first installed BF2. My nforce software wasn't installed correctly, and when I did a reinstall BF2 worked flawlessly. Seems like the game is very sensitive when it comes to sound drivers.

I've found the problem, after a few suggestions about the sound, you were right.
I've reinstalled windows and put in an Nvidia FX5200 - 128Mb to test if it was the Graphicscard. It didn't help, it still crashed and restarted. I've sended the rapportfile  with the error and got back a message that it was the C-media soundcard.

Still have to download SP2stuff now and install loads of other things but it looks like I've got BF2 working.

Duvel, 9iron (or whatever) from BIG had this problem at the LAN. You need to delete the temporary user files in 'My Documents, "your PC account name", Battle Field 2' It'll recreate these when it starts again. If you want to be safe rename the BF2 directory and try again.

I did some remote support this morning with DuVeL. We upgraded his video drivers, reinstalled 1.03 patch, made sure he was running @ 60Hz, deleted the startup videos from the movie folder, deleted his profile and deleted the BF2 cache.

Yep, I got thrown back to desktop several times first. What I did is just reinstal the patch and it worked fine after that. Still some problems trying to join our server. Also tryed flying a jet and BF2 crashed. Ahwell, atleast it was fun.

1 cool thing allready happend, an enemy was driving an APC and instead of running away I pressed the wrong button and ducked and he just drove over me and I didn't had a scratch. 8)

I still need to sort out my account though. Wear my tag and all.

It was download accelerator messing things up. It seemed to be running in the background. I've played on a ranked server to test it and got my first badge for the medic. After that I went to our server and lost the connection just once where my comp seemed to freeze. For the rest, now I need to sort my CS:CZ and other computer stuff (if they don't mess BF2 up).
