Title: Knife of Dreams
Post by: smite on October 16, 2005, 10:56:02 PM
Bugger finished it already. :(

For the people who have been following the series:
Book Eleven ties up all of the loose ends of book Ten that we so very annoying and prepares readers and the main characters for the final battle of Tarmon Gai'don.

Good story line of Mat, Perrin and Egwene which had me hooked and unable to put the book down.

And a couple of very good twists :D

Suppose i had better start the new Terry Pratchett.......hope this lasts longer than 5 days.

So I'm on the hunt for something new.

Not sure if this appeals, it kinda does, but they all generally say
QuoteWhat can I say, the initial book left a fantastic impression. The opening is very traditional fantasy, anyone will be right at home with starting out following Rand and his friends simple village life before the inevitable path of destiny sees them all thrown into danger and into frantic flight from certain doom. The characters are all endearing be it the flamboyant and grouchy Thom Merrilin or the mischievous Mat. Not all the characters in our band tend to agree, and frictions usually arise over the use of magic by the taboo Aes Sedai Moriaine who appears to have triggered the danger that follows our lead trio Rand, Mat and Perrin.

The book is well paced, with many a show stopping set piece involving ferocious trollocks or the sinister fades, set against inter party disagreements, tragedy and moments of desperation when our happy bunch end being split. Add to this the continual menace of the overall Dark One who invades our heroes dreams at will and you've got the foundations for a fantastic series.

Or so you would think. The one worrying thing I've heard about this series is that as you get further into it, the books begin to lose their pace and drive, the most worrying comment I've heard from a friend was along the lines of "I've just finished book nine, it didn't really need to be written but still looking forward to book ten". The prospect of forcing myself through 800 pages just to further the story by a step isn't that promising. I found this out for myself once I hit book three, book two kept up the quality of the first well but I found myself being taunted in book three with promising glimmers of story only having to wade through chapters to get some sort of satisfaction. We're not talking the good teasing storytelling here, its the bad 'oh my god, just DO something' variety. So this is perhaps something to consider before embarking on the hugeness of The Wheel Of Time. I'm stopped at book three

Is that about the sum of it?

Bearing in mind the last book I read was a Crichton which I did enjoy, but maybe a change of format?

I'm working my way through the series, Just finishing book 6 at the mo, after discovering book one about 5 weeks ago. Any series that makes me want to read all of the books straight after each other is a winner, I think they're great

Wait until you get to book 9 and 10. 9 it starts to go downhill and 10 was a real struggle. But still, Smitey says 11 is good so I'll have to get that and read.

Books 1 through to 7 are superb....but yes they do slow down and the reason is that there are 6/7 main characters which when you are eventually jumping from one area to another there has to be some type of setting explanation.

Book 8 starts to slow down ...9 even slower ....and 10 is a standstill. Which is why 11 is good, it basically takes all the unfinished scenarios (spelling?) from 10 and makes a fairly busy book.

I have re-read this series 3 times and book 10 is actually very good the second and third time around.

Benny read them you can normally go through one book in just over a week. The series is worth it.

I read 4 and 5 in 5 days, its well written well enough to make the reading enjoyable even when the plot slows, or there is an ornately floral descriptive passage, at no point have I yet found myself getting bored of the reading, I normally stop because I'm late for whatever else I was meant to be doing.

Give it a miss Benny. Life's too short to be suckered in to a series of books where the author quickly latched on to the idea of producing more books than necessary.

The thing that got to me was the glaring holes in the plot and the introduction of more and more absurd ways of moving through the world that only get used as and when the author sees fit, not when the plot would benefit from it.

The other trick of Jordan's is his incessant 'wordiness'. Yes he's a marvel at descriptive writing and his words paint very clear images. But he continually spends pages (yes, PAGES) describing characters who, it turns out, are nothing more than transient bit-players to the story and, as such, do not warrant such extreme detailing.

I've read up to book ten and as the others have said the first five are very readable. But quite frankly by book nine I didn't care less about the Dragon Reborn and his cronies and only read book ten to see how it ended - which it then didn't  <_<
