Title: Dwindling numbers on the dMw server
Post by: Ranger on October 30, 2005, 10:55:12 AM
(Mentioned this in another thread - but think it is worth highlighting in it's own thread.)

Been sneaking over to the [TG] server  regularly, being doing this for some time - in fact, I've mentioned this several times on this forum...

No harm I thought - nice change of scene and pace (after all the dMw server just can't offer the 64 player games that [TG] can)...

...BUT...

Over the past week or so a lot more dMw guys have been following suit - I didn't think anything of it at first, nice to have the guys along!

Then I twigged: If we are here, who's on the dMw server???

And if people check on the dMw server, and no one is there will they know where we all are - or will they just drift off thinking the dMw is a 'dead' server???

This is especially a pity because, the week BEFORE last we were just starting to attract regualar new guests.

We have to come up with a plan to ensure the dMw server gets the support it needs - one suggestion I have is for us to nominate a specific 'away day' when we visit servers like [TG] - BUT on every other day we must support the dMw server.

...It's fine nipping off to the [TG] server AFTER the evening's dMw games have finished (after 11pm)...But we shouldn't desert the server 'ad hoc'.

Maybe we should have a pledge to undertake this?

If everyone remembers to use their X-fire, at least we'll be able to find each other :P

I just leave mine on in the background 24/7...

and it's how I find you lot usually...IF you have it running

edit:TG doesn't start filling until 11ish, so plenty of time for a scrap on home ground

Yep - ALWAYS have mine on - and even when playing on the [TG] server I Alt-tab between games to see who else is about and which server they are on...

(In fact I am just about to buy a new LCD, so will have a two monitor set-up so I can always see who is on X-Fire, and thus who is on dMw server.)

WHat we need to say is: If there are more than 6/8 dMw players on - then we should be on the dMw server.

(Remember - while 6 dMw players - ie 3 v 3 - may not seem a lot, guests check the server and we always get 2/4 guests in when we play - so 3 v 3 soon becomes 4 v 4 or 5 v 5.)

To be honest I would never choose a full TG sever over a 3v3 AAS game on our server anyway. If I am looking for a game at 10 pm. I know there is no point loitering on our server. So I would find another game. But to not even try and get a game on our server seems wrong*.

*unless you do it Fridays when the bulk of the dMw guys are getting there CS fix.

ps.  USE XFIRE :)

We had the same issues on CZ and CS before that. The fix is to get people to join the server even if there is nobody else on it. 9 times out of 10 you will not be on your own for long and once a few join then you get a good game going quite quickly.

Please don't be reluctant to join an empty server. We know this fix works from previous times - it's just a case of getting people's buy in to the idea.

See you on the server (I'm the quiet one in the corner ;))

This is what I mean by getting people to 'pledge' to turning up at 8pm - even if the server is empty.

I think what is happening is that half a dozen people are going "there's no one on the server" - whereas if they all joined instead of just assuming that no one was there there would be enought to make a decnt game.

IMHO

The trouble is there are a few - like myself - who like BOTH formats - manic 64 player on TG and more tactical and paced smaller games on dMw...

The trick is to - as you intimate - do the [TG] stuff when it has least impact on the dMw server population...

For me that is after 11pm mid-week and Friday/Saturday evenings (when people seem to have other things to do).

But I think we should ALL act as our own recruiting officers and hassle people on X-Fire to join the dMw server when they are online.

It has really changed, and that is really a shame!

I haven't been on for about 2 weeks due to an assignment I have to do and when I went on last night at  8 in the evening UK time, I was surprised - it was only me! I stayed on 30 mins trying stuff and OB joined. 1 hour later we were 4, and finally we became 6... that only held for two maps I think, then people left. What a pity! At 11 it was only me and Snooks on Sharqi so he went to another server and I logged off...

Even though it was a saturday evening we are normally more like 12 in total.

Did you try messaging people on X-Fire to let them know?

I was on the [TG] server last night (as Saturday nights are usually quiet on the dMw) - BUT was on X-Fire (as were a few of teh other dMw regulars that were on TG).

I would have been quite happy to come back to the dMw server if asked.

We have to get in the habit of using X-Fire to message people to make our presence known.

I'll always come back to teh dMw server if anyone wants me! (OK - so u may not want me but that's not the point!)

:)

As I only intend to play on dMw, X-Fire is of no use to me. Like Delan, several times last week, I thought I would have a game but  the server was empty! This was at about 7:30-8:00ish. Gaming  begins at home!

I noticed that Blunt has a custom status of:

"Looking for a game of BF2"

Which seems a good idea to me. So, at the risk of stating the obvious, if you want a game of BF2 and use XFire then set your status accordingly and you'll soon see who else wants to play - alternatively...

I always go to the DMW server, even if it has only three or four people. There are always some non-dmw who join in, and the fights are bery good.

This evening, I played with you guys, with about seven or eight on each team. Great fun ! (even though I can see what a vacation can do to my skills.... no more vacations!!!)

Good idea - I will do this:

EIther, "Looking for a game of BF2" or "Waiting for dMw players"

ANyone who sees me on and wants a game in the dMw server please message me (it is likely I am in warm up phase in TG or a ranked server - I never mind dropping those to come on the dMw server).

Otherwise I will always come into teh dMw server at 8pm to check who is there (and probably muck about for 20mns until others arrive - if no one arrives by 8.20-8.30pm I can be found on the TG server.

LOL - this is probably way too much information!

;)

FWIW I think having weapons unlocked on DMW will only make this worse as it now encourages people to migrate to ranked servers to get the points to unlock their weapons

Anyone agree?

I agree, I enjoy playing on dMw with all the fancy weapons and so. Publics are allready worse enough, don't start our server with it aswell.

im sure you can get it so you have the unlocks even if you dont play on ranked servers its something to do with the global unlocks on the server settings

EDIT: so therefore if the above is possible no one would have to go to public and would enjoy coming here saving time as they have unlocks straight away ..  introducing more and more people to the community

Sorry Doris. It don't work that way. EA will tell you off if you allow all weapons on a server.

One point. ranked servers aren't all bad. I had a cracking game on one the other day. It was a clan server rather than an EA public. but there was talking and everything.:)

The other thing. every weapon I have unlocked is not a lot better or even worse than the standard ones.

All well and good - but people do tend to like to join a server that at least has one or two other people on it!

This is especially true of teh guests we haev been getting.

But you are in part right - if we all undertake to turn up at 8pm whether there is anyone there or not this should encourage others to pop in.

So how do servers ever get people on them then? If we all sat back monitoring the server waiting for it to become populated then we'd all wait a bloody long time.

If you want a game of BF2 then join the server. Trust me. I know how the dMw collective works ;)

I think this is a non-issue anyway, especially if last nights game is anything to go by - we had about 10 a side in two squads  :D  BF2 marches onwards.

I joined at 9.45 and it was 8 per side. we also had some new faces there.

The server is looking good :D

I'm not sure that I think that the ranking systems sucks as such, the idea is okay and some of the ranked servers are good fun. Last one I played with Delan was a regular kindergarten though. We joined the server 3 minutes before the map ended, and for some reason I managed to get 2nd place within that time - I only killed three people and capped one flag :D  Then they started kick votes against me! It didn't help that I took down 4 choppers in the next map (one of them was a loaded transport) - that sort of put them in a bad mood  :P

Hehe, oh well...

I really think that people should be given the choice to run their servers with all weapons unlocked. As I understand it, you don't gain points when playing on a non-ranked server, right? So, if you make it so you don't gain any points by playing on an all-weapons-unlocked-server, people wouldn't need to behave like idiots, as is the case on most ranked servers now, and it wouldn't interfere with the ranking system. It would equal to a non-ranked server, wouldn't it?

I think most of us agree with you on the unlocked-issue. Especially the problem with not being able to use the unlocks on non-ranked servers. There is a dilemma - a serious player wants to use unlocked weapons can't find a serious game on a ranked server :-\
