Title: Can't start the game
Post by: delanvital on November 12, 2005, 10:22:04 PM
Me and mono bought some new screens, switched from CRT to a nice 19" TFT. However, I can't boot the game - but he can. Did about the same. Installed the monitor, installed some menu software and a screen driver.

I have reinstalled gfx drivers and reinstalled the game. No dice. I can start the game if I run the bf2_r.exe directly - but then there is no connection to the internet, i.e. game browser is empty and I cannot connect directly to any IP.

What else can I change? Any help is greatly appreciated

I tried putting the screen to 800x600@60Hz but no luck either.

Check your refresh rates. If you havew used anything to force the refresh to something other than what windows wants to supply try turning that off.

You could also do a search on this forum as it has been discussed before ;)

I will try various refresh rates, normally it is not tweaked at all - and currently set at 60hz, even though on a TFT... I have checked Duvels posts and tried to check all of that, but had no luck :-\

I have now
- reinstalled the nforce software
- tried to run the bf2.exe with +nosound and other parameters
- reinstalled directx 9.0c from the CD
- emptied the game cache folder

No dice.

Does the game create an error log?

check the following file:

My documents\battlefield2\profiles\0001\video.con

edit this file and make sure the reference to resolution and refresh rate does not exceed the spec for you monitor

IIRC you can delete the profiles and the game will recreate new ones. From the "readme":

Quote Occasionally on some video cards you may be allowed to set the
display mode to one not supported by your computer. This will result
in a black screen being shown. To remedy this use the Windows
Explorer to find and delete the directory:

    \My Documents\Battlefield 2\Profiles\

This will reset your game to the default settings. You can
now start the game, retrieve or create a new profile, and re-adjust
the settings using the Menu as normal.

Are you using the DVI cable, if so put the VGA one in. It will handle more resolutions.

The highest res you can do on BF2 in DVI will be 1024x768 on a 19". Its a standard resolution, BF2 will not run at 1280x1024 and that is the next acceptable DVI resolution.

First of all, thanks for helping me out 8)

Something strange happened. I tried outofsync's excellent idea with the refresh rate (my game was set at 800x600@85Hz, I reduced it to 60 for starters, so this is probably the cause of BF2 trouble) but then my DVD-drive would not accept the BF2 DVD! "Please insert your BF2 DVD", and yes I did remember to stuff in the DVD :D.

I then tried with a CD in the drive and no luck either. For some reason my drive will not accept discs. It wont spin up at all. The drive bay does open and all and with an disc in the drive it makes a little sound like it is about to spin up, but that is it.

I feared a rootkit virus, despite not sure it is relevant, and did a complete scan and was found virus free (both with my Kaspersky AV and with that Symantec removal tool for the Sony DRM malware)...

This machine is getting weird. Tomorrow I will check out the cable connections...

I had the same problem when I first bought BF2, I was using newer versions of drivers than those on the CD.  tried removing them and installing the ones that came with the disk and everything was fine.

So I finally got the DVD drive sorted out. Then I started the game after editing all the video.con files with settings exceeding the monitor and voila.

Now I can play single player - but not multiplayer (?). Trying to connect to a server and I find myself looking at my desktop, i.e. crash. Anyone tried that before?

All I have changed is my TFT screen instead of a CRT. Then I reinstalled gfx drivers, nforce drivers etc. Only firewall I use on this machine is windows own, which has not been changed...

Punkbuster is mostly related to internet playing of course so I figured not being able to play online must have something to do with that. And yeah. I donwloaded the PB upgrade program and did an upgrade - something must've went wrong with the latest install - and voila.

I also found that changing your NIC setup and disabling NIC's and such can cause trouble with PB.

And yeah, I changed every video.con :)

that happened to me at the lan actually... turned out that when I uninstalled bf1942 (to make space for other things...) it messed up something in the registry. I got round it by doing a system restore to the point before I wiped bf1942...

Anyway, sounds like it was punkbuster - where do you update that from? I was kicked once or twice due to punkbuster "not being able to connect" ...
