my pc wont seem to boot from cd rom tried all the usual stuff but to no avale..... :(

and with what are you trying to boot xp cd bootable version?
tryed bios ? 1e cd-drive..?

Little bit more info required.......is it a new build\rebuild \new build from old bits etc
(ie) why are you having to boot from cd
Does all the usual stuff include checking BIOS is holding info, reset of CMOS, change of cables, removing all but necessary peripherals and changing out cd drive?
iam putting a new hd in with a new copy of xp....
ergo i need to boot from cd rom.
on power up with the new hd in it asks to press any key to boot from cd...on pressing the button."ntldr missing press con alt del to restart but it wont so i have to reset.
so i tried it with my original cd of xp..still the same..tried it with original still working hd with xp on.with both new xp disc and old it just boots up as if there was no cd in the drive.....
tried it with just my old hd in by itself it did boot once so i came to conclusion the new hd was messing my system up....after putting pc back together with just old hd in i thought i would try again just to make sure ......wouldnt boot from cd or dvd rom..made some bootable floppy's but it just hangs at the point you put in disk 2.... :( :frusty:
im sure i had the same problem with the ."ntldr missing press con alt del to restart " but im sure i phones you to fix it .. lol

Not sure I fully understand why you are loading another copy of OS onto new drive in same pc?.....
I'm assuming the new hdd was set as master and you changed the old hdd to slave before you attempted to load the OS onto the new drive?....ergo master\master conflict with hdd's
Suggest old build with old hdd, reset cmos, set boot as cd\hdd\hdd (miss the floppy and ensure nothing in it) and nothing in cd drive with 1 stick of memory to ensure you get back old system and old hdd is not corrupted.
If it boots to windows at least you know you have a working pc again......if so remove old hdd altogether, put in new (set as master) and attempt to load from new cd as fresh install.
or plan B
you can try the first repair option on old hdd (enter recovery console) and type:
chkdsk /r
- this will try to recover bad sectors if there are any
- this will take a REALLY long time. Time enough for 6 beers if I recall correctly.
fixboot
- this will attempt to repair the boot sector (may not be necessary)
fixmbr
- this will attempt to fix the master boot record(may not be necessary)
Try booting after each of these, if one fixes it - STOP, back up your data, and do a clean install of XP.

Using the Recovery Console, copy the Ntldr file from the Windows XP CD-ROM to
the root directory of the current active partition. Follow these steps:
1. Start your computer by using the Windows XP Setup floppy disks or by using
the Windows XP CD-ROM.
2. At the "Welcome to Setup" screen, press F10, or press R to repair.
3. Press C to start the Recovery Console.
4. Copy the Ntldr file from the Windows XP CD-ROM to the root of your system
partition by using the following commands, pressing ENTER after each
command:
a. Type "cd .." (without the quotation marks) to go to the root of drive
C.
Note that there is a space between the d and the two periods (..).
b. Type the letter of the CD-ROM drive.
c. Type "cd i386" (without the quotation marks).
d. Type "Copy ntldr c:" (without the quotation marks).
e. Type "Exit" (without the quotation marks).
If the partition was not formatted by using Windows, you might also need to run
the Recovery Console fixboot command to make the active partition bootable.
After you can boot into Windows, it is recommended that you use the Windows Disk
Management snap-in tool to reset the original system partition as the active
partition, and then restart the computer.

ive sorted it now thanks guys....tokk me a while
i had to dl some boot floppys for xp pro sp2 edition..
then it booted from them now i have a lovely clean 160 gig hd with a soon to formatted 80 gig......just goto load loads of stuff back in <_< but hey wot can ya do...... thanks dingo...... ,,doris (for nothin) :whistle: 8)
