Title: BF2:SF
Post by: delanvital on November 24, 2005, 11:24:00 PM
I think it is very dark!  It could be fun, but not in the all out war style which you get in regular BF2. Not sure how fun it is without an AAS mod, with say 8 players in total, even on a 16 player map...

I'm looking forward to hear what you guys think of it...

I tried it on a 64 player ranked server (bamboo commandos - actually a quite good one) of course without AAS, and the difference in style of play between BF2 and SF was not very evident. I think the 64 player maps are way to large to bring out the sneaky style that SF invites to.

The addition of fighting indoors is brilliant, although pretty tough - you really have to be on your toes. But it provides basis for some brilliant shootouts across balconies and hallways and stuff like that.

Then there's the night maps - as Delan says, they're really dark and the night vision goggles are not a life saver as such. You only want to use it when it's really necessary. The vision is grainy, and the battery power slowly drains and does not replenish. Of course I always died before it could even get close to being drained

The grapling hook is brilliant, although I never figured out how to pick it up again.

The most effective weapons will almost have to be the flashbangs and teargas.

The flashbang turns your screen almost pure white and it lasts 10-15 seconds - enough time to be killed a lot :)

The teargas turns your screen blurry and blobs in a fluid motion for the same 10-15 seconds, and it's impossible to do anything meanwhile. You have a gasmask, but in the heat of the game you (or I, atleast) often overhears the voice warning when the grenades are thrown.

All in all I think that SF brings a lot of new cool additions to BF2, but there should have been more maps. The only time you get to be SEAL (oink oink) is in one night map, and they're not my favorites (the night maps). There should have been at least one night and one day map per team, if you know what I mean.
Also, obviously but disapointing, the Spetznaz uses the same weapons as MEC, and the rebels also uses russian weapons, and there's at least two maps I think, with Spetznaz vs. rebels... I wanted to play around with the new weapons, not have two new 'armies' that uses 'MEC-weapons'

I'm really looking forward to playing it with you lot, though. I really think that our style fits SF well (or vice versa).

And now to something completely different:

I can not recommend using english voices only. I tried it yesterday for the first time, but I'm going to change it back. Maybe the arabs and chinese talk complete nonsense, but at least you can tell if the guy who talks are on your team or not  :)

arrived this morning and after re patching got down to some play. not impressed by the night maps really but the new urban maps are great, Iron Gator is quite unusual as it's set inside a US carrier and is very enjoyable. Squad play essential to clear rooms.

Ghost Town is a great urban map but can be overpowered by the heli's but would be a great infantry only map. Some nice new weapons which seem a little more deadly the flashbang may become a bit irratating after a while but is very useful addition.

Now back to another server....

For some reason the postie was late today. I thought I was going to have to go without.

Just installing now and as outofsync says.

Remember to re-apply the v1.12 patch afterwards.

I'll get the SF in the mail this weekend (still hot from gameplay.com), and I'll install and try it if I have time. However, (check my post in bravo-banter), I'll probably not be able to try it until the middle of next month.

New urban maps seems fun, though. Urban maps are my favourite ones!

good to see ea r doing the realism thing again.

ill explain

it ws mentioned in a post above that the nvg (night vision goggles) have a pants battery and if you use it it drains to nothing!

ok switch to reality in my last job before i moved onto puma helicpters was in a nvg bay and the battery life on them is..... not 1 hr but 20hrs and that was with 2 camera style batteries which cost about 3 quid each

so nice realism ea?

"pulls out oar"

ps getting mine next wed

Mine's arrived!

(With apologies to Dewey - my boss - as I am off work sick today...NO I didn't plan this!)

I had to stick it on just for a quick session to see how it was.

Can't give a whole lot of feedback, BUT I will say this...

Fantastic to be able to play British troops. I am a little competitive anyway, but being able to play the SAS just seems to make you try extra hard to win for the team!

As soon as I saw those little Union Jacks on teh map I went all squishy...Then killed lots of stuff!

:)

I am sorry for our other European dMw members as I am sure they would have liked their nation represented too. Maybe there will be another mod in the future for other countries?

Anyway - like the G36 - not so sure about the Assault weapon.

But first impressions are positive - and the maps look ace!

Again...Sorry Dewey ~ but couldn't resist insatlling this!

The British voices are a bit stereotyped and repetitive (there only seems to be the one medic call, for one).

Looks very easy to AAS though.

The internal names are a different format to the original BF2, but as the SF pack is classed as a different mod it can have its own AAS code.

The internal names on all the maps are very similar and I could quite easily adapt the mod to recognise them, the biggest ballache will be coding in all the new CP names and working out some routes to take for every map size.

Thats if anyone wants AAS on it.

had a few crashes to dektop since installing BF2:SF

performance has taken a bit of a hit as well. Although my system is not cutting edge:-

Athlon 2400XP+
1GB RAM
GF6600GT

But never experienced this before on any server. Tonight on dmw server crashed twice to dekstop, perhaps an AAS issue perhaps not. played most of the day on EA ranked servers and found much as we all do that the "experience" is nothing compared to a good evening on the dmw server. headless chickens springs to mind.

Some of the maps are good, some not. Surge springs to mind looks great but its a bit like kubra, I much prefer karkand or mash. Not sold on the night maps, roll on BF3 or the next patch to fix the performance issues. Pls EA put the heli TV guided missiles back to how they were without the stupid heat haze thing.

On the plus side the new SF weapon unlocks seem to be an improvement especially the SF medic unlock which rocks.

I am looking forward to the release of POE2 (http://www.pointofexistence.com/) which should inject some life back into the game.

I haven't had any performance issues at all, and I don't exactly have the state of the art machinery either:

xp2800+
1 gb DDR3200
Radeon 9600XT (128mb)...

And yes. PoE does look good  :)

Not sure I'm a fan of the night games. NV goggles are ok, but it's a bit like playing a monochrome game :).  I like the idea of zip lines a grappling hooks. first impressions of the maps is that they are more infantry based, which will be good for us.

Not flown any of the choppers yet. but I'm guessing the hind will be a bit like a bus :).

I have driven the quad bike. where the hell are the arms   The Hummer with TOW would be great in Standard BF2 but not seen a tank in SF to shoot.

I think any BF2 fan will like the game, but is it worth £20! not sure.  It would be good if we could add SF maps in to our normal map rotation. I guess we will just end up starting the SF server on special occasions.

On the contrary. That HIND is extremly maneuverable. Takes some getting used to.

So now you guys have played it a bit more, what are your thoughts on the maps, weapons, extras?

I haven't played it yet (just got the game today at work) but I still dream of revisting Karkand 2 - what a cracking map that is, would be lots of fun with zips and grap/hooks  :D  You'd be like spidey!

Well, had a go now...Only on single player as yet - but it gives me an idea.

THE GOOD:

1) Both day-time SAS maps are great - like the Russian one with the rocket, these seem good candidates for AAS. ALSO, I do like the SEAL night time map where you have to fight your way up a big hill (but this is the only night map I like).

2) All the new G36 models - EVEN the support MG!

3) The quad bike - fun, fun, fun (wish they had included your hands on the handle bars though - bit strange the bike appearing to steer itself!).

4) The tear-gas and flash-bangs. Nice tactical addition.

THE BAD:

1) The night maps...Not as much fun as they were cracked up to be (except the SEAL one which I mentioned).

2) The SCAR-H ~ bit disappointed. :( I found that the 7.62mm round, while hard-hitting, was less accurate than the 5.56mm version of this rifle that the Spec Ops has. On automatic the SCAR-H bucked all over the place.

3) THE LAG - the Spec Ops maps seem to use more system resources/memory than the original BF2 maps (why?)...I had the basic BF2 maps hyked up to High quality graphics, I have had to drop the res/quality to run the Spec Ops! :(

4) The SAS assault weapon...Is it me or is this really inaccurate and the 'scope' doesn't help all that much.

Poo.

SF on publics remind me of unreal Tournament. I have played it a few times now. the maps are too small, it's just a frag fest.

I think it will work with 12 dmw guys using AAS but i don't think i'll be playing it much more on publics. not even ranked servers :ranting:

Well - had my first ranked server game with SF last night...

'Total Devastation' map (which I like anyway) on a French server.

This is a day-light map, so some of the critisims that people have made about teh night maps don't count here ~ I actually think this will make a superb AAS map. Lots of variety of scenery and chances to sneak round.

BMP is the thing to watch out for - but there are plenty of buildings for infantry to sneak around in and teh narrow lanes between the buildings mean that Special Forces have plenty of chance to C4 the BMPs...So it's nicely ballanced.

I understand what Armitage means about a frag fest - but I think this is more to do with the usual public server attitude of some people than a fault of the maps themselves...

I played Special Forces class (which seems to be my new class of choice) and I am glad to say that I upheld the dMw honor by coming a very creditable 2nd!!!

(I was well pleased.)

As for teh night maps - wel, I will reserve judgement, but I suspect that only Devils Perch will prove poular...The SAS airport one is just very badly designed and disappointing.
