Title: SKY+ ~ Mine arrives on Wednesday!
Post by: Ranger on December 11, 2005, 12:16:35 AM
Well, finally did it - I relented to the marketing and bought SKY+

I do actually have a good reason for wanting it - that being that all the stuff I want to watch is on dead late, and I have to go to bed early as I catch a 7am train for work!

I went for the new £49.99 (plus an extra £10 a month) deal where I get a SKY+ box and they fit my old digibox in another room of my choice ~ we're having it in the bedroom (the box that is).

This means the kids can watch Sponge Bob on Saturday morning and we can watch something grown up in bed!

Looking forweard to it - just a pity we didn't order it in time to record 'Rome'.

:)

Anyone here with SKY+ already?

SKY+ is the best thing for TV *ever*. Make sure you get the cheaper smaller HDD vesrion because it is a doddle to slap in a bigger drive.

I'm with Oldie and Mad (not like that)...Best thing EVER!

We have our Sky+ in the front room, with one of the £20 extenders sending it up to the bedroom with the remote as well (runs over a co-ax connection), then the spare box is in the study where the kids get to watch their stuff.

The study one also has an extender on it into the nippers room, so it's on Cbeebies all day with no interuption to my...

Threshold, SoccerAM, movie channels, random comedy shows and (not mine) every flickin soap re-run under the sun.

Had it since Feb.

Piped it through to Kitched/Dining room/3 other bedrooms plus the old box is in my daughters room with remotes.

Good reliable system. Oldie mentioned about upgrading I've had my HD now for about 3 months and will upgrade from 80GB to 160GB over xmas when I find a sober moment

Which box did you get Pace or Amstraad ?

But you do realize Sky will be doing High Def next year for which a new box will be required which will have a HD in it

I have just been 'reading' Suetonius's 'The Lives of the Twelve Caesars' ~ and if you think the BBC have 'spiced' this series up for better ratings then you should read this book!

Depsite having been writen in the First Century, this book is funny, gruesome and informative...

While we all think of Caligula as being a nutter, you should read about Tiberious...Dirty old man!

Seriously, if you get a chance, read this and Julius Caesar's 'Commentaries' (Conquest of Gaul) if you want to learn something about the Romans.

There's a free translation of the complete 'Twelve C here: The Lives of the Twelve Caesars (http://penelope.uchicago.edu/Thayer/E/Roman/Texts/Suetonius/12Caesars/home.html)

The Caesar's moto seems to be: 'If it moves shag it, if it doesn't eat it ~ if unsure, shag it then eat it'.

Just waiting for it to arrive (Wednesday I belive) ~ so will see then.

Have heard you can bang in a bigger HD - that would be interesting...

YET AGAIN - had an example of why we need it last night...After finishing BF2 I sat downstairs with the missus and we started watcjiong a really good film ~ but we were both knackered and had to go to bed...

Woudl have loved to have recorded teh rest.

BTW ~ Can you record stuff from the normal Sky Movies (not Sky Box Office) channels?

Are there ANY restrictions on recording I should know about???

Ta.

There is a time delay on matches recorded from the prem plus channel ...think it dissappears after 48 hours or so  ;)

Not sure about sky movies - I don't have the package. Sky box recordings only keep for 24hrs.

The only other restriction a can think of is you can only view/record 2 channels at once otherwise you get a clash

Well it arrived! (A day late - apparently there is an Xmas back-log!)

Anyway,  the guys came in and started to fix things up...

PROBLEM 1:

I asked for the old Sky box to be put in our 1st floor bedroon (got that £49 Sky+ and Multiroom package).

OK said Fred...But ten minutes later said - "Where's the upstairs phone point?"

DANG! - You need a phone point to plug the digibox in - which the nice guy on the phone who I ordered the box from neglected to remind me!

...Luckily 'Fred' had an extra long phone extension cable which now runs (attractively!) up our stairs until we can get a new point put in!

PROBLEM 2:

After finishing the installation Fred told me that I wouldn't be able to record straight away - and that it might take up to 4 hours to register the new package.

Bit disappointed - but what the hell, I had to visit Mummy Beaty that night anyway so I could wait...

Next day I tried to record - only to be told that the service was STILL not available to me. And when I phoned the Sky 'helpline' I was put on hold with an estimated time of responce of 80 minutes!

So I put it off till this morning (Sat) - getting on the helpline extra early!

Told the guy what had happend only to have him have a big rant about the 'lazy a r s e'd installation guys!...LMAO!

APPARENTLY - they were supposed to ring through to Sky to activate the package (or have me do it while theye were there) - But they don't like hanging round because they get paid by installation they do, so often nip off and leave you to it!

...BUT..>Sometimes they are in such a rush they FORGET to tell you to register!

The Sky rep told me that he had had a load like this already this moring!!

--

But anyway - the upshot is that it is registered and working now! Just in time for Christmas!

:)

Well

Bad service mate, write 'em a letter and get the install tech binned off the books.

Ours did the same with the phone line...

But, come on what do you think of it?

Now i've had a chance to 'play' with the box I'm over the problems!

The Sky+ is brilliant...And I can't believe the quality of the recording!

I dunno what kind of compression the box uses (MPEG4?) - but the picture quality is amazing.

If - like me - you used to record on VHS and had to put up with grainy recordings (because you kept re-recording over the same tape) you'll really appreciate the Sky+ quality...

I also like the ability to record series at the touch of a button - and with only something like 6 buttons it couldn't be easier to use.

I recorded a documentry the other day which was an hour long, this only used 2% of the hard drive!!!

Fanstic!

I recon it will be a long time before I need to upgrade the size of the hard drive.

I haven't used the live pause yet - be interesting to see how that works.

Very pleased!

(My only remaining problem is how to link the Sky+ box to my home cinema system, as the Sky+ box has an optical output but I have only one optical input on my amplifier! So which do I use with the optical - the DVD or teh Sky+ box???? LOL)
