Post by: Thulsa Doom on December 13, 2005, 04:29:16 PM
My son is old enough (nearly 5) to play PC games, and I wonder what PC games other folks have for their kids!
Any recommendations?

UT ..

obviously with the gore/blood turned off

they just seem to like running around shooting stuff !!!

think my lad was 9 when he got into CS ...but unfortunately has lost interest now (he's 11 now .....going on 34   !!)

he loves his runescape now ...(Freeby on the net) ...looks crap to me ...folks just walk around a lot ...but looks harmless enough ....plenty of admins on that ya can report people swearing to as well ....but this may be a little too old for him  ;)

Lego Star Wars is awesome, especially as a 2-player game so you could play with him. Not sure if a 5-year-old could manage the controls (though they're just your standard consoley controls), but with you helping him it should be okay.

Serious Sam, he'll love it. It's easy, yet brutal, and you can add whatever you want like infinate ammo, all guns, super speed etc. May not sound too great to you but kids love it when your indestructable and running around with a mini gun that neveer runs out of ammo...
There isn't that much gore but if you don't like the tiny amount of gore that there is you can turn the blood green.

When my kids were younger I got then a game called 'Zoombinies'...

It's an introduction to logic and basic maths...NO LISTEN! LOL

This game is fantastic! - I even enjoyed playing along with them.

These little characters have to be taken across an island - you have to solve various puzzles on the way, matching the right kind of Zoombini to the job.

All the puzzles are FUN! - I liked the Pizza sorting game!

Now the box says the game is for 8+ year olds, but with parental help this is a terrific start to a 5 year old.

Review: Logical Journey of the Zoombinis (http://www.kidsclick.com/descrip/zoombini_del.htm)

My kids loved it! - And there are two follow-ups (that's how successful it was). Tripple pack (all 3 games) available here: Zoombinis Triple Pack  Â£14.99 (http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B0002ZDT56/203-9972648-1105513)

Another series of good games is teh LEGO action games - Amazon is currently selling  the LEGO Fun Pack (4 CD SET) (http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B0000DGYWC/qid=1134592219/sr=2-3/ref=sr_2_27_3/203-9972648-1105513) for just £13.99, and this includes fun tiles like 'Legoland' and 'Lego Racer 2'.

Hope this helps - sorry they are not violent! LOL

First PC games me an Doris played were Delta Force and Carmaggedon.

I controlled the mouse and Doris had the keyboard. Hows THAT for co-op play?  :narnar:

I feel old...  :narnar: I remember playing Biohazard (forerunner to Duke Nukem, side scrolling platformer) when I was a kid. And Duke Nukem 3D and Doom 2 (never actually played the first one or Wolfenstein 3D for very long though). I still run DOSBox on my system so I can occasionally load up Cannon Fodder and Micro Machines  :D

This is the point where I find out you're older than me, and I just think of me being a 'kid' much younger than you do ;)

Yup. Just that doing two things...walking AND shooting was too much for our tiny minds to deal with.

we got through a few of the missions, played the first one over and over...

i agree with zoobienes, ive played it and it was quite fun,  :)

but i no someone who started off playing doom and UT when they were 5 and they still like games now.

but i would recomend zoobienes and maby cannon fodder and lemings for a start.

nice and simple games to get started, and i still like playing then now.

I'm ready for retirement... I remember Pacman, Omega Race and Garden on the Vic20, Space Invaders and Battlezone on the Atari gaming console, and Way of the Exploding Fist on C64...
