Check out Pandora (http://pandora.com/) plug in a band or song you like, and it picks out a bunch of songs/artists and plays a selection of songs on a custom "radio" station for you. Looks like a very good way to find new music you might like without spending hours in HMV wondering how to tell if the 40 weird looking CD covers might indicate something you like in the all encompasing "rock" section...etc
just used it, seemes pretty good so far, picks out the non run-of-the-mill stuff well.
I entered "hood" (a band I love) and this is the response:
"First off we'll play a song called "The Lost You" by Hood..." and has a link at the bottom explaining why they're not playing a Hood song.
Is it me?

edit: okay, now it's gone from fairly hardcore-ish metal (Isis) to Queen Latifah. This thing is odd.
This is a MUST, and since not enough replies were written, I guess not enough dMws tried it.
I entered Depech Mode and finally I found bands I have never heard of but which are GREAT, such as VNV, Beborn, etc. (all german, btw :-) - maybe this whole gnome project is a german scheme?).
Me, and now also my brother, are regular users of this after I read the post. I have about 10 different 'stations' now. Pandora is running right now :)
Sorry for not giving feedback. This is one of the best sites I have seen in a long time. And it is free!
(but VNV is British... ;) )
This is the first time i had come across this post and its flipping great.
You can keep adding to you selection of bands to get beter results.

tell it you don't like it and it'll adjust. Add a few more bands you like to the station that are similarish to hood and it gets better :) dunno what I did without it - now all I need is a media player that will run it ... wnoder if the PS3 will run it...hmmm
Nice bump Le Rouge
I missed this first time round
You will need to have a US Zip code, i suggest google for one, but 10001 will work (its a new york zip code).
this will let you setup a free account. :)

OMG, you are right. But strangely enough, they are very active and popular in Germany. Had me fooled. Maybe zey are ze remains of a WWII espionage netz?
Anyhow, the funniest thing is that they actually perform (DJ set) TONIGHT in Tel-Aviv (where I reside; this is in Israel  ).
Figured I would bump this post. I've used Pandora regularly since and it is just great! I have about 10 different channels, so when their license agreement prevents you from skipping, I just listen to one of my other channels :)
i put it on when i need some new inspiration. Shame it doesnt work on the Wii, else it would be on all the time. (something about cacheing file on ur PC, which u cant do on the wii)
hmm, i thought this was some sort of bio genetics thread lol
duh :roflmao:

Must protest about using 10001 as the zip code. After growing up in the early nineties I use 90210 without fail :)
As for Pandora, missed this first time round - really quite a nice little tool that was pretty clever at finding music I liked.
I've ignored this thread for ages as it sounded boring from the title.
I nearly missed out. Fantastic find, more than enjoying it and adding a few artists to blinkered tastes.
