I've finally decided that I need a new PC.
I was thinking of getting the following:
ASUS A7V8X mobo,
Athlon XP2100 (upgrading sometime in the future when prices drop)
512Mb PC3200 memory
128Mb ABIT x8 Siluro GeForce4 Ti4200-OTES
80Gb Maxtor ATA133 quiet drive
Boring case and some fans and stuff. (PC hidden under desk)
What sort of PSU would I need, is 300 or 420w enough?
Is XP better then W2K and is it better then W98SE?
Any comments, suggestions or stuff? :?:  8O
XP will save u a LOT of work as it will auto detect all ur hardware etc. i wouldnt go back now to anythink else. the 300w psu may b pushing it it would b better to go higher than that but the 420w would b fine, its better to have a bigger psu than u need then one that provides 2 little power.
Agreed.. Get at least a 450w PSU. YOu'll be glad you did.. Especially if you get an NVidia FX card *larf larf*
I made the switch to XP.. I think it's great! never looked back.
Get the Epox 8rda+ . Much better then the Asus. Oh by the way I own the Asus A7V8X. :)
Never forget that actually XP is shite. It's just a more subtle form of shite than ME or 98 which were kick you in your teeth upfront and obvious shite.
XP is more steal your wallet and run off with your wife kind of shite.

Sorry, but it isn't. That is the sort of MS bashing I find amusing. Given what MS have done with XP it is a great advancement on everything that has gone before. Very stable (not uncrashable but then what is) and a great games platform.
PS I do not work for MS and do not agree with everything MS do but your comments are without substance!
I am extremely drunk which may well have a significant bearing on everything I say....as is often the case.
edit- Removed inane drunken waffle Quote......but your comments are without substance!
Arguements about Microsoft are pretty pointless. My issue isn't with the functionality of XP which is, as you say, fine. My comments were about the nature of XP which is far from fine.
The reason I dislike the OS has been covered by the huge anti-trust court case which Microsoft
lost. It about restriction of choice, unfair control and a very real worry about where XP is taking the world of computing and Internet usage in the future.

So whats wrong with the Asus? My current PC has an Asus mobo and I've not had any problems with it. :?:
Good choices Mr Sn00ks.
I to have to agree that xp is the better option of the OS's that you list. I also agree with all the stuff about MS but as is also mentioned at least thay are making an effort with xp.
even i find it very difficult to b00ger up XP, especially with the excellent role back system feature, this has saved me MANY times.
also i cant rember the last time it crashed, last time was october at the lan i think.
Yep XP is a much better OS that ME. And SP1 is better still, now that I can turn off all Microsofts built in stuff :D
Of course we're still ALL DOOMED I tell DOOMED 8O

Theres nothing wrong with the Asus its just the Epox is a lot more tweakable plus its Nforce2 chipset. The A7v8x is a kt400 chipset, you'd be mad to go for that, if you want an Asus get the A7n8x, tho the Epox is still better in my opinion.

Now I'm intreagued. What's wrong with a KT400 chipset? I have a Gigabyte GA-7VAXP mobo that used the KT400 NorthBridge ???

The reason I said he would be made to go for the kt400 intead of the nforce2 is ..well I mean have u seen the performance difference for a start. I know somone, same cpu, same vid card, same speed mem only difference I have kt400 they have Nforce2 they get 800 - 1000 more 3dmark points then me, that equates to a fairly large performance increase in any 3d game.
They have the ability to run the memory in dual channel mode, which the kt400 does not, plus by all accounts they are generally far better overclockers then the kt400. I have PC3200 mem in my sys but I cannot run my fsb at 200 175 is my max, my cpu is stable at 2450 so I should be able to run at 12x200 all day long...... Not a chance, All epox board users can providing they have the cpu that can do it.
Now I appreciate It could be any number of things preventing my 200 fsb
but Ive narrowed it down to either the agp divider or the mobo chipset, both i which I could solve by getting a epox board, or to a lesser degree the Asus a7n8x (lots of peeps are having "issues" with these mobos at the mo).
Sooo there in a nutshell is why i recommend the Epox 8dra+
OK...Although I will not be doing any upgrades until the Athlon 64 with the Hammer core arrives. Then we'll see. :D
:( New PC on hold for a short while :(
I spent all my money paying some off the mortgage, I came over all sensible coz I want to retire early and I can live with the PC I got now. :?
Might treat myself for my Bidet :?:
Same spec will probably be about 1/2 the price by then
So no Lotus elise either then!! :(
QuoteSo no Lotus elise either then!! :(
I didn't say that :!:
I still need to test drive one. I suspect I wont fit in an Elise, heard that 6 foot is about the max so unless I get my legs or head clipped, or always have the top down, it'll probably be a non-starter. I might have to compromise and go for a TVR 8) But before I do that I must get the bike back on the road first  I keep saying I'll do but never get started, maybe this year? :?: :P
My Boss has an Elise. I hope you have lots of money? Servicing and repairs are extortionate. To do just about anything requires the mechanics to almost dismantle the car so the labour costs are unbelievable. My boss keeps it because he loves driving and goes on track days and to the Nurburgring a couple of times a year. However, he does say that if you want a car to get into and scoot around in then the Esprit probably isn't the car for you. Oh and it fills with water every time it rains!. Seemingly, the Elise Drivers group were going to get T-Shirts printed with TADTS on the front especially for visiting the garage. TADTS stands for "They All Do That Sir!"
If you are into driving in a big way then you will love it but the design is atrocious from a maintenance viewpoint.
My mate has a Marcos Mantula. That breaks down a lot and leaks too. Maybe one of those could be another way to empty your bank account

hmmm don't see that as being a compromise myself especially if you go for the Tuscan S Hubba hubba!
