I have a friend who just bought and tried it out.
He's got an Athlon 2000 (or thereabouts), tons
of ram, and a GeForce 2 GTS... and I quote:

Quotebut it is _barely_ playable at 640x480 all details on low

also:

QuoteAnd I dunno, maybe my eyes are going, but it seemed
like a lot of blue/grey enemies in blue/grey halls or outside at
night in blue/grey fog...

P IV 2.53 GHz, GF3 Ti200, 1 GHz PC2100 DRAM and it is smooth at 1024x768 with everything turned up! Think it is a graphic card prob. NB Driver version can make a big difference

Frenzy and I are both running a GeForce2 GTS using 40.72 drivers and it runs sweet at 800X600.

Yeah, he's trying to figure out how to afford a GF4 right now :)  Another friend says that UT2K3 looks *way* better with a GF3/4, vs a GF2.  There are some effects that the GF3/4's can do that that the GF2 can't.

My friend said it did work fine at 800x600, when there weren't any enemies around.  But it got unacceptably slow for him when he got 3 enemies on screen at once.

He's a *very* technical guy so I don't doubt him, but even I can't figure out how performance could be *that* bad at 640x480...  Maybe his fps standards are higher than the rest of us?

I'm just trying to keep myself from buying a GF4, because I'll need a new computer and a 9700 anyways when Doom3 comes out. 8)

Bought mine this morning and only played a couple of levels so far.  Looks real good, I've got all the details on high and running at 1024x768 (?)  - just as Bernard Matthews says - bootiful  :D

Only problem is that I have had 2 unexplained crashes in mid game - just dumps me right back to desktop  :(

To add to the debate:
AMD 2100 cpu
Gygabyte GA-7VAXP mobo
512 Mb DDR400(PC3200) ram
GeForce 3 Ti500
Audigy Soundcard
Western Digital 180GB 7200 rpm HDD

running at 1024x768 with everything turned right up, full particles, shadows etc. Some of the cut scenes have the occasional jump, but the game strolls along regardless of how many sprites are on screen at a good frame rate.

It really is one of the most delicious looking games I've ever seen....I just hope that the appauling enemy Ai and the almost processional way the enemy run at me isn't going to be a feature of the rest of the game. It's also not impressing me in the scarey stakes stakes either. Compared to AvP2 it's opening level was very poor.

Still there's alot more game left to explore so I'm optomistic  :)

AMD XP 2000 cpu
Asus A7V333 mobo
512 Mb DDR266 (PC2100) RAM
GeForce 3 Ti500
Audigy Soundcard
Western Digital 120GB 7200 rpm HDD
XP HE

My system (above) is almost identical to yours, but a bit slower in the RAM and CPU department, but again, no frame rate probs at all, just those darn annoying crashes  :x   Anyone got any ideas as to why it crashes?

It's crashed on me too, twice - at exatly the same point. Not wishing to give spoilers but it's just before you meet Miller (vague enough?). The pop up mentions a general protection fault and some references to a sound module. Probably just patch material I hope. I got past it anyway and am on to the next seaction.

First crash, I selected submit the bug report, but no web page ever came up.  Second time it did, but just with the submission box.  Nothing afterwards.

However, having turned off the EAX I had NO crashes  :D  when I played for half an hour last night. Woo-Hoo!

The only problem I have with it is the sound is a bit crackely. I have eax turned off and have reduced the number of voices but with no effect. Other than that it looks good and plays well. I have found it to be rather linear, as in there is no room for going off and exploring and meeting other things like in some games. But that aside its still good fun. Shame there is no multiplayer though.

I have had a couple of crashes too after about half hour but my system ends up rebooting completely that was with 40.41 drivers, i dont have Eax on either.
The readme file recommends using the 41.09 drivers which are what they've been testing with and they reckon the 40.41's cause probs.

So far it hasn't dropped.

This game kind of reminds me of Half Life.......all the dead or dieing Scientists, weapons Labroratories exhuding mutant life forms with a few Aliens chucked in for good measure, haven't come across Barny yet.......looks good though

I was getting a lot of whistling and random noise...specially when sound changed i.e a new music score started.

I really liked the idea of the Atlantis as your base, although making Aria (or whatever her name is) semi nude was a bit sad.

I think the problem is that the game has been SO hyped that I was expecting a masterpiece. As soon as you see the graphics and cut scenes this just adds to the idea that you're about to play something really special. And then the game turns out to be just reasonably good (and very short).

The sweet graphics only go so far though. There's some really ghastly clipping , invisible barriers to hem you into the playing area , terrible collision awareness, and really piss poor AI. GFC is right the game is very linear - mission update, land on planet, go "Ohhhh over the graphics, kill lots of baddies, kill a level boss, back to ship, repeat x 10. The End.

5/10     Role on Splinter Cell

There is something very sad about getting the hots for a computer character....but I suppose if you are going down that road she's about as fit as they come (pun intended).

I also found the rag doll feature that stops the aweful dead body poking half out into space when it  drops. Doesn't stop all the clipping but it's an improvement

/me puts on his grumpy hat

Did this game even get playtested?!?

First major bug was a door on the first level where it had become sepurated from the glass, this ment that when the door was closed the frame blocked you, when the door was "open" an unbreakable pane of glass slid into your path  :(  clipping generaly sux

The prize winner of bastard bug from hell is on the (3rd) defence mission involving the techy bloke and the broken computer console, i fought off the first 2 waves then awaitied the third....

The only bug I've found is the grenade launcher animation, which is a constant. I've gotten up to the 7th artifact thing without any majour level bugs, althout the launcher animation is just lazy :/

Dispite some of the problems (and the crap humor) Unreal 2 is the best single player experiance I've had since half life.

I'd have to say that Medal of Honor is a far better game. Enemy AI is really challenging and just an all round more polished game. But at the end of the day it's down to personal opinion. No more crashes since turning EAX off (which begs the question - why did they ever let you turn it on?)

It's such a dire game that it's best to uninstall it altogether, then the EAX problem becomes mute!

Although the enemy AI is astounding.

AI script begin
1. If player seen then run at player - fire primary weapon
2. If player returns fire - zig zag

end of script

and Unreal 2 which is dreadful

I don't know of any Unreal 3  :?:

Unreal Tournament 2003 is the multiplayer only game

Unreal 2 is a single player only game

in that case why is unreal 2003 30 quid????/35 in some stores
As unreal 2002 is 35 the same price and is only single player it makes no sense
Title: Unreal 2 out now
Post by: smilodon on March 03, 2003, 02:37:33 AM
I have no idea. They say they wanted to create two diffeent games, one designed for multiplayer and one for single player. The only thing they have in common is that they take place in the same universe and (I think) use the same engine. Effectively they are two completly different games.

They argue that most multi-player add ons to single player games are done as afterthoughts and are never that good.
Title: Unreal 2 out now

And in the case of unreal 2 the levels appear to be an afterthought to an engine  :?

UT 2003 was total crap - bunch of kids running and gunning.  No tactics, no suspense, no atmosphere.  Sounds a bit like Unreal 2 from the thread in this forum.  Yes it may be sexy, but that "wow factor" doesn't last long if the rest sucks.

Compared to PCS and AvP 2 I wouldn't touch any unreal title again with a 10 foot cattleprod

Quoteunreal 2003 does both online and single player why the two versions???

Okey Dokey

Unreal Tournament is a multiplayer game. There is no single player game as such. What Epic did though was to include a bot program so you could play deathmatch off-line against a load of bots (unsuprisingly). They claimed the AI of the bots was revolutionary. It was nothing special, PODBOT was just as good on Counter-Strike and that was written by a bloke in his bedroom. So a multiplayer with an aveage bot program that served as an excuse for a single player game.

Unreal 2 is single player only with no multiplayer. It's also arguably got no playability, no decent AI, no sensible level design, no attention to detail, no decent voice acting and no point to it's existence.

Just finished Unreal 2 last night.

Must say I was a bit disppointed. The graphix were OK but the AI was crap and I thought it was a bit easy in parts.

Also, not much of a story. It was like mission-artifact, mission-artifact, .... Tough Mission-final artifact. Kill baddy. Roll credits.
