Title: PC2100 RAM for sale to fund PC2700 RAM purchase
Post by: TeaLeaf on February 09, 2003, 05:09:11 PM
OK, I'm starting to get that upgrade itch again and this time the DDR RAM is the target.  I am thinking of getting a single stick of the Corsair 512MB DDR XMS2700LL Low Latency Platinum CAS2 (http://www.overclockers.co.uk/acatalog/Online_Catalogue_Corsair_65.html) module to replace the 2 x 256MB DDR PC2100 that currently sits on my Asus A7V333 mobo.  There are only small problemos:

The first is that of cash  :(   As I am still trying to get a new busienss off the ground I will need to sell my existing DDR RAM to reduce the pain of the new RAM.  So, is there anyone out there who is interested in purchasing the RAM?  I have no idea what it is worth so this is a slightly speculative post, but are there any interested readers?

The second problem is whether or not it will work in the mobo as it is not listed as supported on the Asus website.  Corsair do not list it as compatible (http://www.corsairmicro.com/main/compat/asus-k7.htm) but does anyone know?

I think the worst thing that would happen is that you might not get the benefit of the faster ram on an older mobo. If a mobo maxed at 2100 then 2700 ram would just run at 2100. Of course if you upgraded the mobo at a later date to 2700 then your 2700 ram would run at the faster speed as soon as you did.

Yep, but it looks like the A7V333 can run the PC3500 at the right speed  :D  ...with a bit of cooling (see link above).   I wouldn't want to go quite that fast with the memory, but PC2700 would be a nice step up - but I need someone to need my PC2100 memory.......

ooh ooh ooh :D pick me pick me!

is it generic ddr ram or does it have fancy things like brand name and low cas latency and buffering etc? I have 256Mb pc2100 generic make and am in search of another generic 256 stick to boost my bf1942 experience :)

btw, ddr ram doesnt fit in normal sdram slots :) my motherboard has two sets of slots, two for ddr and two for normal sdram, and you can only use one at a time. I think sdram is 168-pin and ddr is 184-pin (although you can get it in 200-pin aswell just to make things easier...)

I'll check out the branding etc later today - it is the memory that was supplied by Evesham whent the machine was purchased.  I'll post more later for you.....

nice :)
this is the ram I was looking at http://www.crucial.com/uk/store/PartSpecs....CT3264Z265&cat= (http://www.crucial.com/uk/store/PartSpecs.asp?imodule=CT3264Z265&cat=) basic 256 from someone like crucial where I can get free p&p :D

OK, I checked it out, the memory is:

2 x SAMSUNG 256MB DDR DIMMs (total 512MB).
CL2.5, PC2100 (266MHz)
Unbuffered Non-parity
2.5V (32Meg x 64).

So it seems to be exactly what you're looking for.  Seeing as you'll need to spend £62 to buy it at Crucial, do you want to do a deal on mine?  Make me a reasonable offer and I'll post it to you as soon as my new RAM arrives (overnight from my supplier).   If it arrives DOA then don't send me any money  :D    I guarantee that this RAM has never been overclocked, so it is still in good working order.......

So if you want to save yourself some money, post an offer here or PM me with details and we'll make the necessary arrangements.

are you going for 2700 or 3500 ?  BTW, I thought it were 3400 ??  still never mind.

I was originally thinking of PC2700, but then I found that I could run PC3200 on my mobo using a stick of XMS PC3200 with CAS Latency: 2T, CAS Delay: 3, RAS Precharge: 3, tRAS: 6, Command Rate: 1T and Bank Interleave: 4 with the DDR voltage set at 2.60v (frequency multiplier: 14, FSB 166; core voltage 1.70).  So I am thinking about that now.

Then I found that Corsair say that a 512MB stick of their XMS3500 CL2 DDR434 will work on my mobo  8O  so I am thinking about that as well now  :?   Too many choices, too many temptations

I suspect cost will be the final determinent.....

Sanity has returned to the fold.  I have ordered one 512MB stick of Corsair memory - XMS2700 CL2 DDR333.  I wanted to go for the faster memory, but thinking about it a bit more I realised that there were other things that should take higher upgrade priority before going for the even faster RAM.

So next time the upgrade bug hits it will probably mean new graphics card, CPU and mobo.    After that it may have to be some compression cooling like the Prometeia  :D

TL's Upgrade Tip-o-the-Week:

Connect3D RADEONâ,,¢ 9500 PRO + VGA DVI-I & Tv-out - AGP 8x £145.70 Inc Vat
Connect3D RADEONâ,,¢ 9700 + VGA DVI-I & Tv-out- AGP 8x £187.99 Inc Vat

They can be bought here (http://www2.theoverclockingstore.co.uk/browseproducts.php?basket_session=3ba1aba9524bdb173d730fb4dff31022&categoryid=113&basket_session=3ba1aba9524bdb173d730fb4dff31022)

Now you can't argue with those price:performance ratios  :D  /me tempted again  :(

Nice to know that I kicked off a blue cold cathode trend for MHPCS  :D   By the way:

TL happy.  :D
TL has nice new superfast RAM in his PC  :D
TL blame royalmail.co.uk and wife for error
TL asked wife if she signed for anything on Friday as that's when the RM website said it delivered.  She say no.
TL assumed that as webbie said Friday they mean Friday, not Thursday.  :?
TL did not ask wife if she had signed for anything the day before.  8O
TL did not think that wife would have signed for something on Thursday, but not have given that package to me by Friday.  8O
TL applies a large wet haddock to said wife several times
TL apologised to postman
TL understands that postman should be fit to return to work again by next weekend  :P

Moral of the story?  Never trust women who say they have not signed for any packages............
