Title: SATA HDD problems
Post by: Thulsa Doom on December 31, 2005, 07:27:52 PM
I'm having some issues with SATA HDDs on my PC.
Here's how it all began...

I bought 2 160gb SATA HDDs 1mnth ago and configured them as Raid 0.
Had a few issues, may have been cabling, but got the raidset config'd eventually and XP installed.
Not long after, I kept getting bad sectors, and I could hear a noise I can only describe as a high-pitched Wasp in a Coke can.
The noise was a regular 1/4 second high-pitched buzz, that sometimes went on/off for 10-15 seconds.
During this time, my PC was frozen.
Soon as it stopped, PC was OK.

I split the raidset and installed a single drives.  Bad sectors cleared.
Same thing happened.
I thought the drives were faulty and was gonna RMA them.

However, my original 80gb SATA that I've had for >1yr started doing the same thing last night during the CZ tourny.
It has never done it before.

I haven't updated MOBO bios recently, nowt has changed except a new install of XP.

I also thought power may be an issue but the config I have has been the same since Aug/Sept and had no issues then.

Have changed SATA cables etc.

PC Config:
MOBO - A7N8X-Deluxe (rev 2.0)
1.5gb RAM (CL3.0)
AGP Radeon 9800PRO
80gb SATA or 160gb SATA * 2 (all Seagate)
Power Supply 450W.
Athlon XP3000 (o/c to 3200)

Anyone any ideas?
Would high temperature affect the drives and cause this prob, as when I heard the beeps last night I reoved the side panel and never got them again.

Maybe it was Whitey trying in vain to sabotage my PC during the final  <_<

Think its as low as 50 degrees where data coruption can occur on hard drives.I would seriously check out your PSU to make sure it is delivering the goods thulsa. If you need to you can send them to me to test,no cost. :)

Does it start straight away or does the PC have to be running for a while before this starts  happening
