Found this tip on TACTICAL GAMER BF2 FORUM (http://www.tacticalgamer.com/battlefield-2-general-discussion/65414-never-fat-finger-parachute-button-again.html) - thought it was interesting enough to repeat here!

the lines in controls.con look like this for me, using numpad 0 for jump&chute:
jump: ControlMap.addKeyToTriggerMapping c_PIAction IDFKeyboard IDKey_Numpad0 10000 0
chute: ControlMap.addKeyToTriggerMapping c_PIWeaponSelect9 IDFKeyboard IDKey_Numpad0 10000 0
The main advantage to this is that when you jump off a roof, you can just keep spamming the jump button, thus minimizing the time needed to open the parachute.
Anyone understand this let alone want to give it a try! LOL
:)
already done this for my zboard. the chute still open when it feels like it
There are a few things to ask when your chute doesn't work.
1. Have I just been flying supersonic and I'm still travelling forward faster than falling, you have to be falling at a certain speed for the game to realise you are falling and allow the chute to activate. You will usually find a solid surface/cliff unless you were at a high enough alttitude.
2. Is the chopper I bailed out from in the same trajectory as me, hence the chute won't open because there is a large heavy object right above you falling at the same rate.
3. Am I too close to the building/cliff I just jumped from. Chute won't open if the canopy doesn't have enough room to open fully.
4. Was that a box of sandwiches and a flask that just went past me. You left the chute in the barracks and this is your hiking pack.
I've never really had a failed chute that couldn't be explained by the environment or something daft I was attempting (there is no solid floor in the cooling towers, parachuting in or trying to land a chopper in there just won't work, no matter how many hours you try  ).

Me too...it's simplicity itself...as I posted on the z-board thread
QuoteGo to your My Documents folder and look for:
Battlefield 2\Profiles\000* (mine is 0001)
Open the Controls.con with Notepad. (Make a copy first)
Change this line:
ControlMap.addKeyToTriggerMapping c_PIWeaponSelect9 IDFKeyboard IDKey_9 10000 0
to this:
ControlMap.addKeyToTriggerMapping c_PIWeaponSelect9 IDFKeyboard IDKey_Space 10000 0
Save
