I really love them - they're both free!!
Logmein is similar to PC anywhere or GoToMyPC just a free version and foldershare makes people sharing remotely a brezze without having to set up a server and access permssions etc.

Do you mean VNC?
If so then yes,. i have used that but found it didn't work so well when trying to get to or from a dynamic IP. You need a static IP address for it to work. That's why I switched to Logmein.
In addition, you can connect to logmein from any pc without having to install any software. just type in the url, udername and password and anyway you go. Handy for those internet cafés when abroad

Oh yeah VNC. You are right, Logmein sounds well-featured. Will give it a go.

For compressed files I just use Total Commander. No other app needed - and then it also handles ftp, file and folder syncronisation, massive file renaming (never done better), splits and combines files with crc-checking, decodes and codes MIME, BinHex, UUE and other directly, handles folder shares and drive mappings - but the best is the excellent two-window way of handling of files combined with all kinds of short-cuts to remember folders you just were in etc.
Also the integrated text-viewer/video player (which supports text, binary, hex, multimedia, html and unicode and both ansi and ascii) is a plus. The viewer is basic, but loaded instantly as you swap through files. Also, tons of extra plugins are made, like incorporated cd-burners etc. - for free.

I have to agree with Delan that Total Commander (cool name, huh?) is one of the greatest progs there is. It's the first thing I install after a windows install.
Other than that, ACDSee classic - loads fast, and have almost all features you could need.
Oh, and of course Winamp :)
Total Commander
Firefox
Thunderbird
VLC Player
Gaim
Azureus
iTunes
Photoshop CS
All above are mostly my essential programs ;) I prefer open source most of the time, and if it wasnt for all the gaming issues i would be running Ubuntu Linux on this machine also. But alas so far i only use linux exclusively on my laptop for univeristy work :D :D
Superb tools Pen thankyou so much! :)
You're welcome Paddy & GM,
I have to say they are the most useful programs I've ever had - makes my small multi-office setup a breeze to co-ordinate.
Hope you get as much use out of them as I do.
My only worry is that Foldershare was recently brought out Microsoft so I hope they don't tinker with it too much and it stays free.

No!! Don't do it! I just tried it
Out of interest I installed Google Desktop. Now most of it is pretty useless, not to say irritating, but once you've disabled stuff you don't like (which for me was almost everything) I'm left with the Search Desktop function. It is truly amazing how quickly you can find ANYTHING on your pc. Beats the Windows search by at least 25 minutes.
:thumb:
EDIT: Nearly anything, not Windows apparently :( Still very good though.

Log me in (free) - which lets me connect to other computers over the internet. Great for looking at the office machine from home and /or troubleshooting other people's pc problems. its free and it's great.
Foldershare folder sharing and synchronisation over the internet. Share/synchronise your folders between machines - add or amend a document for example and within seconds it's transmitted to the other machines on the same list and updates them accordingly. its free and it's great. - great for real time backups as well!

Foldershare has been getting quite a name. I used it for a while, but after not needing it for a while I uninstalled it. I am about to install it again. But, I wonder, are there any security holes or procedures I should take care of? I mean, it does install a client on your PC that overrides windows security...:eyebrow:
I don't know Delan.
I find folderahre great as it's synchs between offices in real time so everyone can use the latest versions of the databases etc.
I can't say I've had a probelm with it- the biggest concern is that if you delete one file - it's going to delete on the rest of the machines as well (however it is retrieveable).

I have been very please with it as well. Hm, I have installed it on the 3 PCs now. Hope all is secure...
Mp3 TagStudio: http://www.magnusbrading.com/mp3ts/
This is probably the most useful piece of software for anyone who has a decent size music collection.
Rename the files, tag from file names, remove annoying comments in the tags etc.
So useful, it's free and fully featured, the only down side is a small advert (it really is small and unintrusive) which goes away if you buy the full version ($19 covering all future releases)

I only came across it today and haven't tried it yet (work laptop), do let me know how you get on.

It appears to be a freeware alternative to TuneBite (the app for converting I've used before). Both simply capture and re-record the music in another format (i.e. to convert a 4 min song you have to wait 4 mins :eyebrow:). I am still looking into MyFairTunes - appears to be better than TuneBite at first glance.
Edit: "iTunes Plus" which stores in m4a-format instead of m4p is btw a nice change from Mr. Jobs... not all music is available though.
Edit2: Program seems unstable. Two crashes and no luck converting. Might be my comp.

Notepad++ (http://notepad-plus.sourceforge.net/uk/site.htm)
anytime over that worthless one that comes included in Windows. On the download page (http://notepad-plus.sourceforge.net/uk/download.php), if you scroll about 1/3 down, there is a section describing how you completely can replace Notepad with Notepad++ (as in replacing the Windows notepad.exe with a custom-made one for NP++), which works brilliant imo :)
