Title: Whisky anyone?
Post by: Doorman on January 26, 2006, 07:28:12 PM
This is Nordschleife (http://www.gofastvideo.com/gallery/item/predownload/121/1/free-racing-videos/ruf-porsche---stefan-rosler.html) I have the track on GTL and I propose to offer a bottle of (good) whisky to the fastest lap put up by anyone at the LAN. It will be run on MY machine complete with all the geeky bits. 3pedals, gearshift DFP wheel with a REAL Sparco racing wheel, incar view with NO aids! Entry will be free. 2 laps of 'The Mother', in a Lotus Elan. 1 out lap and one timed lap. In general a lap takes about 10 minutes so this is not for the faint hearted.

Someone say whisky? :woot:  I'll not be jealous of whoever wins. Entry should be a double before they start the round, should kick in nicely before the ten mins are up :)

But not as good as the RUF Porsche - Stefan Rosler video, seen that a few years ago, if you want to see some serious driving by the famous porche test driver, check him out in the CTR yellowbird... oh and I must mention I've raced against (upto 190 mph) and seen a CTR yellowbird driven in anger, they are awsome cars, old too around 1989-90 but not much beats them!

Thats done it. Now I'll have to get out and buy a whell to practice! I've had the game since before christmas and its still in the shrinkwrap. This is the incentive I need.

The video was just to show the uninitiated what Nordschleife was all about. Eye watering stuff is the Hans-Joachim Stuck BMW M3 GTR lap! Sorry, can't find a link atm.

Ahem! This is an ill-disguised attempt to get more people involved with GTL (or any racing SIM for that matter) The idea being that in order to show what a REAL driver can do, you'll get the game and practice! So by the time of the LAN IX you'll all be 'au fait' with the car/track and will only need one hot lap! Sneaky eh?  :D

erm I was talking about real life, not pc games, I was a passenger in an Lambo Muircelago (we clocked 186mph, his clutch was on the way out) going flat out against a CTR Yellowbird, which recorded a 196 mph vMax :D

Sign me up for that!

Hopefully I'll get GTL soon sos I can try out my xmas present (DFP) with it. It really kicks tango in GT4, so I'm looking forward to it.

Sad thing is I won't be able to get online anytime soon, because my DFP rig (a chopped up sofa table and a Honda CR-V leather seat ;)) is at my parents house (and they don't have ADSL or anything like that). My place is too small and I don't dare even thinking about suggesting to the missus that it really should be here and not there :P

*Sigh*

But I'll still beat you all at the LAN :D

I was invited to vMax7 (the fastest car club in the world) which is held at Bruntingthorpe airfield. 5th Gear with Tiff Needell was there and filmed the day (nice as my car got on the TV quite a bit).

The idea of the day is to see how fast your car can go. You start off side by side lined up against another car.

The cars on display would make any car enthusiast go weak at the knees.

RUF Porsche CTR Yellowbird
RUF Porsche GT2
Lots of modified Porsches including one 993 Careera 4 that had just had a £55,000 Nardo engine producing 600bhp fitted and driven back from Germany - I got a passenger ride in that, fooking awsome is the only way to describe the acceleration!
A 1977 Porsche used for racing and pumping out over 500 bhp
Lambo Muircelago
Lambo Diablo
Ferrari 360, 430, 355 most modified
Maserati 4200
Subaru P1
Ultimata GTR CAN Am 600bhp!
Toyota Supra - modded
Merc SL600 AMG 621 bhp, nearly 700 lb torque
BMW M3 CSL
TVR Tuscan, Tamora and 350
Vx220
and lots of others  and of course my mx5 which was one of the oldest, smallest engined, smallest bhp etc  :D  Still its been modified sensibly and its hp is double that of a normal 5, so its producing 230 bhp, 205 at the wheels and it doesn't weight very much, so I beat a Vx220, an SLK 230, Boxster and an Alfa but that was about it! I vMaxed at only 136 mph which was dissapointing but my gearing wont allow me to any faster.

I got a ride in lots of nice cars inc Honda NSX, modded porsche, drove a Vx220 and it was awsome day - nice to meet Tiff Needell who impressed us all with his driving. Highlight of the day and of the 5th gear show was Tiff interviewing 19 yr old Adam T at 196mph while driving his dads Ruf Yellowbird!

The highlight was both my wife and I getting a passenger ride in Simon George's (who writes for EVO magazine and car appears there every month) Lambo Muircelago - I got upto 186mph but his brakes where going and his clutch is nearly worn out so he was taking it easy  :dribble:

Of course none of this means I'm going to be any good at driving in GTL, I'm sure Ron will serve my ass on a plate  :D

Sorry it wasn't meant as a brag post, but I thought as a fellow petrol head you would appreciate the photos  :) Nah, George was in a hotel where we met him for lunch, lovely guy, very laid back and not all concieted or big headed but didn't fancy leaving his car in the hotel car park. The running costs on his Lambo are pretty eye watering though, how does around 12k for a new clutch sound? 4k for his tubi exhaust?

I'm sure you'd beat me Doorman, I've seen your setup you must play it a lot!  :D

mmm, I'd say we should all use the default setup or something, else we'd need a lap or three to get used to the new setup (remembering the huge differences setup can make in LFS) - do we get to adjust the steering sensitivity etc or will we all just use whatever setup is available? Can't practice using a clutch myself...but GTL should be arriving in the next few days (it was fun at the last [dg] lan I went to :))

I've been thinking about this and maybe it would be better if you used any car from the TC-65 group. The Elan is too much of a handful! The Lotus Cortina or the Alfa GTA wouls be sensible choices. Of course, standard setups for everyone.
The leveler would be the fact that you'd all be using my kit. Clutch, gearshift etc.
How's that? Fair?

Better mention that I am not in the competition.

Hmm, I agree that the Elan is a tricky car to drive. I know that I would have to practise driving it on the nurb every day for the next months up untill the LAN, so I wouldn't mind switching to another car. I wouldn't mind staying with the Elan either - it would just be much more of a challenge.

However, I'm not sure about the idea of letting different cars compete in this kind of competition i.e. timed laps. Of course the cars are in the same class and are meant to compete against each other, but it wouldn't give us a picture of 'who's the best driver on the nurb', which I suppose is the idea of this competition?

Regarding the setup of the car: How about if you, Ron, make a LAN-profile that we could all download and use? It would eliminate any questions and doubts about anything.

Another thing, Ron: Could you post pictures of your setup? I'm curious to see your pedal setup and especially how you've fitted a Sparco wheel on the DFP. I have an 'old' wooden MOMO wheel (and actually also a shift knob) I'd like to use, but I don't know where to start...

Well, as I said I'm not going to crank the living tango out of it, trying to beat that RUF Yellowbird! I don't think I'll even be pushing 50% - believe me, I'm not going to crash a Porsche let alone a rental one ;)

But the ring is one of the very few places where you can push the car just a little without fearing the police, smashing into oncoming cars or running down people or cattle or rabbits etc. We don't have that option here in Denmark, where the government absolutely hate cars...

Of course, an accident doesn't have to be one's own fault... oh damn you... you gave me second thoughts!!!  :ranting:  :D

I really wouldn't risk it to be honest, theres a lot of crashes on the Ring, not surprising as theres a lot of crap cars that go on there and worse drivers who don't know the circuit, aren't used to driving on track and can't concentrate for the 10minutes your driving, plus their technical ability- I'm not saying I wouldn't want to try it, but it would have to be in my own car.

Yeah, twice, and as its within the first two years of passing the test, I only have 6 availiable points. It was only 37 in a 30 from a mobile unit, so I'm hoping I'll just get a lecture from the Plod and a days safety course. Otherwise it'll be test re-take time.

In my defence it was a fast moving 4 lane road, the most unconvincing 30 mph zone ever. I did phrase that rather badly though. I meant only in terms of the punishment that one recieves for the transgression, i.e. not a ban.

Hmm, I agree that the Elan is a tricky car to drive. I know that I would have to practise driving it on the nurb every day for the next months up untill the LAN, so I wouldn't mind switching to another car. I wouldn't mind staying with the Elan either - it would just be much more of a challenge.[/b]

We're looking for a bit of fun here, not a career move.  :)

However, I'm not sure about the idea of letting different cars compete in this kind of competition i.e. timed laps. Of course the cars are in the same class and are meant to compete against each other, but it wouldn't give us a picture of 'who's the best driver on the nurb', which I suppose is the idea of this competition?

I'm making the bold assumption that not everyone is up to their ears in GTL, so I'm betting that the guy that does a CLEAN and reasonably quick lap will win.

Regarding the setup of the car: How about if you, Ron, make a LAN-profile that we could all download and use? It would eliminate any questions and doubts about anything.

The setup will be as it comes out of the box. The only thing I do is to move the suspension slider to the middle. Someone else may prefer it harder or softer. BlueBall, NO!

I'm contemplating very seriously going in the Nordschleife Taxi. Sabine, a very quick driver who did the ring in 10 minutes in a Ford Transit for god's sake! Or Hans Joachim Stuck. There is another driver who's name I forget. Either way it'd be a helluvan experience.

Ok, I didn't mean it to be that serious :) It would just 'spoil the fun' if one car is overly powerful compared to the others. The long straights on the nurb could make quite a difference here.

Ok. Since I don't have GTL yet, I shouldn't have a problem with keeping the cars default, but what if you have already fiddled with the cars settings - can you revert it to default then?

In general the cars in that class, if they are 'overly powerful' don't go round corners so well. It all comes out in the wash.  :)

okay, been playing about, managed to get the mini round "the mother '83" in just nuder 11 minutes. Bearing in mind I went off the track a few times I imagine there's quite some room for improvement! I tried in a ford Falcon but it's a bit less stable and ended up being slower despite the extra power/potential speed...

...also the unlock and money hacks (I'm keeping my main profile clean but I get bored and it's nice to have the fast cars too!) did not seem to do anything :( anyone got a successful unlock-hack? One that I can keep separate from my main profile? :)

edit: noticed the cheat on ron's website and found another website with instructions on how to use it...

Yes there is. It is another term for deep brunswick green, and as such is an acceptable name. British Racing Green has British Standard Colour Code #BS 381 C and as such is a recognised colour  :P

Traditionalists will tell you that it doesn't exist. yes a colour of green was used by many but, as wikipedia says, the BR green can range from Dark green to almost Black! Hence although the term is used to describe a form of green and it may well have a BS number the colour BRG is any of many different shades hence formally isn't a single colour

Doesn't 'British Racing Green' really refer to the old days where the cars of different countries were colour coded? Hondas racers were traditionally white because Japan 'was white' - this also explains why all the Type-R's of today (type TANGO... heehee...) are white. As far as I have read somewhere, Twig is right that there was one 'true' racing green.

You can have different shades of the colour, BUT the colour does still exist. It can be ordered, mixed and paid for as such. So it is still a colour :P
In the same ways as one can have shades of red, yellow or blue (which is a colour) so one can have shades of british racing green.

Yeah learning that track takes several laps. And with a laptime like that it takes some time. But when you do learn it, you appreciate that most of the track is high speed corners, and not too much Monaco...

The issue I have is remembering which corners are not full-speed corners but are merely very fast, and which corners are the 90 degree plus corners  Cutting the wrong corner (read: flying over a verge you had no chance of braking for) and seeing the message "cut track - time will not count" is frustrating after 6 minutes of driving!

What is a good time in a TC-65 car then?

My advise is to go slower than usual the first few times of driving the track. Just to be sure. And then increase the pace in the corners you are sure of... but I know, that is difficult :)

Depends on the car. All TC-65 cars can be driven under 11 minutes, yet I am not sure they all can go below 10. Maybe some.

I'm sorry Ron, but I have to answer this...

I know that you can have your Type-R in different colours as well, but the white is Hondas racing heritage colour or something and is per definition the true Type-R colour, because the Type-R's are meant to honour that tradition. Just believe me, I'm a Honda nut and I know what I'm talking about ;) :P

As for the Nurb, I'm having a little difficulty getting used to the 83 mother compared to the GT4 version of the track. I use all sorts of landmarks to remember the curves, but in GTL it's very different. I can't get under 11 min in GTL, although this was under the influence of three beers... does that have anything to say?!?  :D

If that was in a TC65 car in professional mode + three beers, you're a man to watch out for. However good GT4 is, it's pitched more towards 'arcade'

S-M, Delan is right. Build up to it. Tip:(only just figured it for myself) turn up the volume of 'Tyre scrub' and 'Skid' sounds. They make you a lot more aware of how close you are to losing it. Something your bum would tell you IRL.

I get the definate feeling that I will sink further and further down the rankings as more of you young bloods take up the cudgel.  :(

It was in the Alfa (sweet sweet car), and well, the time was closer to 12 min than 11 min, now that I think about it again... I wouldn't be too worried if I were you ;) Delan is faster than me, although it must be said that for one he hold his alcohol better than me (he is physically bigger) and second, he knows the game, the cars and the track better than me. I haven't spent two hours in GTL yet... :)

I also tried the nurb in the Elan but couldn't keep it on the road. It just swings it tail around whenever I brake even if I do it gently. I can't quite figure out how to drive it fast. Or perhaps I was just too slow to perceive it's reactions because of the alcohol... Dunno... gotta drive more GTL :)

I sort of agree with you on GT4, but it really depends on how much 'aid' you let the game give you. If you turn off everything, the simulation is rather good I think. But the main reason I drive GT4 is because the force feedback is damn good. You can feel how your car drifts and how the front tires want to go everywhere if you come into or out of a corner too fast, instead of just seeing it on the monitor. It's really 'easy' to control the car. It's difficult to explain, I just think it's good, and I can't get quite that same feeling in GTL although I must say that it does a pretty good job.

I wouldn't mind a wee dram 8)
good point on the time front ... though if it's spread out over the weekend it might be easier

if you are able to make a server run with very strict rules on things like manual gearbox, default car setting, and/or you thought you could trust everyone you could run the competition more as a 1 hour event where anyone can join in and do hotlaps. That way there's a running total and competitors get to do a few laps? Just have to promise not to get in eachothers way where possible, even more like the real thing ... only I doubt many of us have a clutch pedal!

Of course if the numbers are low then I'm sure we'd all like a go on the expert kit :D You know the pain of doing 8 minutes of the lap perfectly, then crashing out two corners running to destroy a laptime though!

Count me in, although that setup scares the hellouttame  :dummy:

Will you bring a seat to drive in, or will it be what Cromwell offers?

Doorman ALLWAYS brings his own seat.
Check previous LANs for pictures.

Rather than having a competition for the fastest lap how about a race? If we can run a GTL server then we can have a race. If there are enough people there coule be a series of eliminators with a grand final?
The people who are interested in taking part already play racing sims and have their own steering wheels, so if they bring them to the LAN this might work?
Make the race a long one, i.e. 30-45 minutes?

Or you could have a setup sitting there throughout the weekend and people jump on as and when they want?

Or maybe we could just arm-wrestle for it?

nah. I reckon the hotlapping round the ring is the best plan! :) racing round it would be interesting but crazy with the long laps? Bringing other tracks into it would mean I'd have to go learn those tracks too

Better get some more practice in on Nordschleife.  :dummy:

I'd really like to give it a try, but I may back down if I don't get a chance to drive some GTL soon. Sad thing is I have no idea if or when that day will come before the LAN :(

I haven't even bought the game yet...

Well, yeah. Sort of. But I still haven't gotten the hang of the GTL feel yet. The transition from GT4 to GTL is pretty tough and it takes a while to get used to it. And not having the wheel and stuff here at home doesn't make it easier. Except for one time, I haven't played it since that time at Delan's place if you remember... with my dead-end adventures and two stop-and-go penalties in the very first two laps  :P

Since I got my new job, I'm not home until 19.30 and I'm pooped. My setup is at my parents house 60 km, or alternatively at Delan's place also 60 km away. IT SUCKS!!! I NEED MORE SPACE HERE!!!! :)

:D Hello Everyone.

Del has finally convinced me to join dMw, though I have been racing online with Doorman for quite some.

I wish everyone the best of luck with this competition. Rememember, a quick steady lap will be quicker that a flat out lap with mistakes. 14.2 miles is a long way.

The GT Legends lap is two straights longer than the GT4 one, so direct lap comparisons are out of the window.  The GT4 track looks more accurate than the GPL based one used in GT Legends but beggars can't be choosers.

Good luck everyone with this competition, my favorite for this competition is del, but sn00ks is a definate dark horse. All it takes is one bad (easily made) accident and it is wide open. So anyone who has done a little practice stands a good chance.

Good luck all.

Deetz.

The GTL Whisky challenge turned out better than I had anticipated. :D There had to be 15 takers for it. Well done all.
The range of driving skills was marvelous to behold, from the downright dangerous, (God help anyone being on the same stretch of road as ALF-FUBAR or PENDRAGON, both of whom rolled it!) to the 'ones to watch' category.
TeaLeaf grabbed the lead with a creditable 2:06 dead, despite being more than half cut.
Later, Gandolph LoJ put in a fingernail biting performance but was just outside with 2:06.15! This remained, what I thought would be the final result, until the last few entrants turned up the following morning. Delanvital donned his winged Viking helmet and crushed the Saxon herd with a magnificent 2:04.68 to take the booty home to Denmark. Much to the disgust of the Scottish contingent.  :ranting:

There were also some good races as well. The memorable one being in Minis. I was soooo confident of winning it but had it nicked from under my nose by TL. Great race! :D

So, I am confident that the -=[dMw]=-Dead Men Racing server will see a few more of you chaps.

Cheers, Ron

P.S. I took a picture of Del with his trophy but I was overcome by technology(again) and I can't find it on my phone :(
Note to self: Phones are for phoning and cameras are for taking pictures  :dummy:

A problem came up: My powersupplie of my gaming rig died when I was editing the pictures of the LAN. They still should be on my D-partition so I'll have to get a new powersupplie first and then I can take 'em off. :(

Well I used it when driving on Ron's PC (as the only one I think?) but calling it an advantage would be lying. I have been driving with it for a total of two hours and damn, it takes time to learn. The thing makes me seasick, no kidding   When entering a corner I tend to tilt my head, making my view tilt as I turn into the corner. Doing S-turns make my stomach turn over...
