I'll let you know how good it is next week - I've just ordered the Gamers Edition

QuoteCompared to a recent test of a Radeon X1600 XT on PCI Express, with Athlon 64 4000+ (equal to our FX-53 in the AGP system), the BFG 7800 GS OC is ahead by over 50 per cent in our Far Cry benchmark.

Looks like it is going to be a good overclocking card:

480/1380 from 375/1200 !!! with standard fans/heatsink

Now if Riva Tuner issue a new version that lets you unlock the disabled pipes/rops we could have a killer on our hands

But the XFX version which is clocked higher and comes with a double lifetime warranty (ie you can sell it and the buyer gets a lifetime warranty too) is cheaper at Scan:

and because I joined Hexus net forums I get free shipping from Scan :D

They sold out at scan so i had another quick look on ebuyer and came across this from BFG Tech

not OCed as much

compared with the XFX one

Many of the reviews I have read show that people are succesfully overclocking the 7800 GS to 480/1350 on the standard HSF :D

Mine should arrive today (according to the Citylink website)

I'm also interested in this card BB. I'd like to hear your comments on ease of use/installation as well as what you think of the overall quality of this card and it's manufacturer.

It is a good deal for what you get.

I guess install should be pretty easy. I am currently running my 6800GT using the 83.40 drivers from guru3d site ( http://downloads.guru3d.com/download.php?det=1309 (http://downloads.guru3d.com/download.php?det=1309) ). These are the first drivers to include the 7800GS in the inf file so it should be a case of plug in and restart PC :) NB these drivers ARE WHQL certified.

XFX are an excellent manufacturer. They warranty the cards for overclocking and supply software/instructions as to how to overclock. Additionally, XFX give a double lifetime warranty. this means you have lifetime warranty for the card and if you sell it the buyer is entitled to a lifetime warranty as well :)

The positives

With the 83.40 WHQL drivers I pulled old card out and inserted new card then rebooted. It just worked.

Half Life 2 Lost Coast Video Stress Test with HDR enabled. 2xAA and 4xAF

6800 GT overclocked to 6800 Ultra 75 fps
7800 GS 440/1300 (out of the box)  80 fps

I think I am CPU or Memory bandwidth limited at this point however it looked much nicer on the 7800GS

3D Mark 06
6800GT overclocked to 6800 Ultra  2661
7800 GS 440/1300 (out of the box) 3370

Doom3 Timedemo Demo1
6800 GT overclocked to 6800 Ultra 56.7 fps
7800 GS 440/1300 (out of the box)  76.4 fps

BF2
not tested yet

nVidia have generally been known for having poor performance with AA enabled. It looks like the 7800 fixes that.

Any negatives?

Yes, the HSF supplied with the card is bloody loud and screams annoyingly at you. I have contacted Zalman and Arctic Cooling to find out if they do a suitable cooling system for 7800 GS that is quiet as the 7800 GS has a different layout to the PCIe cards so the same coolers won't work :(

Overall pretty pleased apart from the noise but I have a zalman inline fan controller which I'm going to try and fit to the fan to turn the speed down a bit (even at 3D it never seems to go above 41C so plenty scope for turning the fan down a bit :))

As soon as i can find another fan that fits I'll be changing it. One problem is that my case is quite "open" so sound escapes quite easily. Without the headphones the sound is awful, with headphones (Plantronics 90) the sound is muted but I can still detect it. in short, the fan is a screamer. Hopefully yours will be quiet and I'll RMA mine as having a dodgy fan.

I'm still waiting on a response from Zalman/Arctic Cooling/Scan as to possible 7800GS cooling solutions.

Better than that! it works!!!!!!!

Peace is restored in the BlueBall household :D

Basically, you need a jewellers screwdriver to remove the 5 or 6 tiny screws holding the coloured plate in place over the fan housing. On the back of the plate is some sticky polythene type substance which the fan rubs against. peel it off, replace coloured plate, reinsert graphics card and reboot. Peace, perfect peace.

Now why didn't XFX do that  <_<

would welcome some reviews of the new 7800GS AGP when you have time. Thinking of getting one myself dont want to get rid of my old AGP setup quite yet as it still does the biz on most games. Maybe when BF3 comes out I'll upgrade or when we get sight of the official MS VISTA spec.

Dunno, I'm not too up on ATi cards. Is the X800 similar in idea to the 6800GT?

The 7800 GS beats my old 6800GT into a pulp. I'm hitting 100 fps in BF2 at 1280x1024 with occasional drops to 75/80 fps plus you get SM3 support and hardware video support (which the 6800 lacked). I reckon the card is up to 50% faster than my 6800 GT was (and it had been clocked to run like a 6800 Ultra)

What's a 6800GT? Is that a Ford?

The reviews I've seen have measured the 7800GS against the X850XT/PE from ATi

The 7800 GS tended to outperform the X850XT PE most of the time. Additionally it can do HDR and SM3.

Don't know how your X800XT stacks up against the X850XT PE but hopefully this'll give you some idea

Would there be an overwhelming reason to ditch an X800XT for one of these?

Damn it - now I'm tempted.

I was going to hold off any further upgrades to my rig, in favour of a 64-bit and PCI-e rebuild later on in the year.

However, the infernal din currently eminating from my Gainward 6800 GT Golden Sample could be enough to sway me...

Personally, I would by an Arctic Cooler NV5 HSF/Fan for the 6800 GT which will cost you around £20 and kill the noise. I would then wait a year and save up some money before going PCIe/A64X2

Its a case of when you are going to take the plunge to PCIe? The cost to move all your hardware to PCIe system would be several hundreds of piunds. I am not ready for that so £230 on the 7800GS was a good buy for me. If you are thinking of going PCIe in the next year then I would hold off.

My 2p

I'd looked at those, but had heard that they don't fit all that well on the Gainward cards (http://www.gainward.com/html/product/vga/powerpack/6800GT/2400tvdvi2GS.htm).  They've got a non-standard layout for a 6800 GT.  The stock cooling solution is a dual-slot cage arrangement with two 60mm fans that tend to scream rather at full whack.  However, they come overclocked to Ultra speeds and fully warrantied straight from the factory. :)

I might just get an NV5 anyway, as they're not expensive.  What could go wrong eh?    ;)

I hear what your saying with the dual-core route.   Been speccing just such a system, and they're still just that little bit too pricey at the mo, considering the single-core performance that the majority of current games/apps would be using.

no.. just all night rebuilding my machine, and i havent even installed the bloody card yet.   :|  im crap i know.

The new case took longer to move over too, and ive gashed my hand in the process. (removing the fdd panel of all blimmin things)

But, my new HSF is installed and its lovely, got some fan control thing with it so im tickering :). It was harder to install as i had to remove the motherboard and the base for the old HSF. Its a bit of a beast.

right, now to uninstall the grpahics stuff and stick in the new card  :dribble:

edit: just downloading new drivers ... my gosh it dont like having no drivers installed :S

Hey guys.. I may be in for a bonus at work soon. Besides the Borla exhaust for my Rex I'm looking at getting this Gfx card.

How's the performance so far? Any issues yet?

Thanks,

NF
