Title: what to do in Copenhagen
Post by: Thulsa Doom on February 07, 2006, 07:45:44 PM
I'm off to Copenhagen this Thursday for a week and a bit.
Will therefore miss another Friday CZ night :(

Anyway, anyone know anything about Copenhagen, and decent places to visit, things to see etc?

The little mermaid is an anti-climax.

The beer is extorandnnt, extornotn, really expensive. Find somewhere down by the quay, settle in and get schteamed.

Nice town though. I half remember a nice garden on the bridge side of Tivoli gardens, also opposite a shop called spunk there is a womans shoe shop....best looking assistant I have ever seen in my life. I almost cut my bits off there and then as nothing would ever come close.

Hmm... what to do in Copenhagen? Well, I lived there and didn't do much ;)

To take the tourist items first:

Forget about the little mermaid. It ain't worth it, period. The bay/harbour at which it (she) is sitting is not interesting either for that matter.

Tivoli is not even open at this time of the year.

Strøget (The longest pedestrian street in the world, yay) is okay if you happen to like the usual types of franchise clothes shops like H&M, but if you're looking for anything unusual don't go there. Instead walk around in the streets surrounding Strøget - they're filled with trendy shops, cafes and stuff and the ambience in the evening is great. In general stay inside the Medieval City (should be marked on almost every tourist map you'd encounter). At the end of Strøget you'll find Kongens Nytorv, a nice  square where the Royal Theather (Det Kongelige Teater) is located and Nyhavn with a bunch of nice but expensive cafes and restaurants.

I'm kind of embarrased to say this, but I don't know about the pubs... I know one called Charlie's somewhere on a side street to Strøget (for some reason I can't remember precisely where it is *ahem*), with loads of different beers to try out (one of each will get you seriously wasted). As Benny Says beer, as everything else, is expensive - in downtown CPH you can easily pay £5 for a pint of Guinness...  :ranting:

If you're into museums and such you should go to Statens Museum for Kunst (state museum of art), Carlsberg Glyptoteket, Det Erotiske Museum (The Erotic Museum) on Købmagergade, which is a sidestreet to Strøget. You could also visit the new opera house on Amager.

I don't know how much you want to spend on food and such, but for food you should really try Soul's Kitchen, for some good New Orleans style food. It's not very expensive but not cheap either. Main courses range from £10 - £20, but the food is worth it. It's located to the left off Gammel Torv (Old Square) on Strøget. It's the first square on Strøget if you come from the City Hall/Square side. Make two lefts and you'll end up on Vestergade and Soul's will be right there. For scandinavian cuisine try Noma on Strandgade. This is pretty expensive though. For down to earth scandinavian food go for the hotdog stands :)

I'm not really into the clubbing scene, but Carribean on Frederiksborggade is known for good food and drinks and it's not extremely expensive. Well, of course it is but not more than anything else in this tango country ;)

I can't think of anything else at the moment, but if I suddenly get ill and remember stuff before Thursday, I'll post here. In the meantime check out this link:

http://www.aok.dk/section/english (http://www.aok.dk/section/english)

It's an online guide to CPH. It's only a fraction of the danish version of the site, but given you only have a week it should be sufficient...

DISCLAIMER: I'm not in any way employed by or affiliated with 'Copenhagen' and only write all this crap out of sheer generousity :D

I'm working most of the time but hope I'll be allowed out at the weekends.
I've been told it's expensive, especially alcohol :(

Denmark IS expensive! On the other hand we have one of the highest tax rates in the world so I guess it adds up...?  (in case you didn't notice, I was being sarcastic)

I went around on the tourist bus - twice and the went to the pub.

I have to say I didnt think there was much to see. The little mermaid was covered in Japanese visitors which was kind of funny.

I suppose the good thing is that the trains are very good and you could get out of town to see places easily.

I'm off to Odense early next month. I think its nicer there.

I have another favorite downtown, large comfy chairs and big cigars. Nice place, but can't remember the name... :dummy:

Edit: When do you plan on being in Odense, apart from next month?
