Title: Camera for the wife's B'day
Post by: albert on March 06, 2006, 08:31:23 PM
Evenin' all,

Looking for ideas for a half decent compact Digi camera for my good lady's birthday. Been looking at the Sony T5/T7/T9 and N1 models because they take the Memory stick DUO and I have loads of these for my PSP. Plus they are small, get decent reviews and seem to fit the bill.

My question is should I be considering any other alternatives? Canons, Nikon, Casio, Kodak etc... Been trawling through review sites no end and they are all much of a muchness, like of a likeness if you like  :)  8)

Any help appreciated.

Edited: Doh, just realised I put this in HW/SW instead of PDAs/ Camera, Admin HEEEEEEELLLLLLLLLLLLLP please move this for me.

I thoroughly recommend this. (http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00065GXCS/qid=1141677661/sr=8-3/ref=sr_8_xs_ap_i3_xgl/203-3932428-8809502)

I bought one for the missus at Christmas and I now use it all the time.

My Mrs bought an Olympus c765. 10x OPTICAL zoom and 4MP. Still small enough for a gurlie (not me)  to use and takes damn fine pictures. Well under £200 now, but they may not be available new.

Try http://www.steves-digicams.com/ (http://www.steves-digicams.com/) for good stuff to read.

I must say, I'm a fan of Canon.
They usually update their cameeras really fast, the downside of that is that a year later you might pay 100 Euros less for the same camera.
But the things they do make are really good.
I prefer the Canon Powershots at the moment. They make good quality pictures and are not just good for people pictures but also for good view pictures (although their still not as good as some people make them here).
In this thread you can see a few pictures I made with a Canon Powershot:

If you want more info about them, let me know. I'm currently using a CanonPowershot 520.
For the rest, King also has a Canon which he bought after seeing a few pictures that I took of his son Brian.
If your still not sure, I'm bringing my camera to the LAN aswell so you can check it out.

my little sony dsc p8 is still doing me proud, cybershots are pretty decent cameras! Go for something small and pocket/bag-able as there's a lot of nice little slim 3x optical zooms out these days for good prices. Sony, canon, pentax, fuji...

Don't get Kodak.

Despite the easyShare shite I find that they're too fiddly to deal with..

If u still havent bought one.... I agree with Duvel the canon cameras are very well built and good value for money. I have a few years old Powershot its never missed a beat, the case is metal not plastic so will withstand life in a lady's handbag. My slr is a nikon which i would thoroughly recommend also.Mebbe a coolpix (nikkon) dinky wee things. I would personally avoid any that use AAA batteries as they are too small and need changed after every 3 photos go for  AA powered.
