Title: Sheep dipping?
Post by: Doorman on March 08, 2006, 09:11:30 AM
Actually RAM dipping or disinfecting your memory sticks.

I have a little XCube that I wanted to put more ram into. I pop in a 512 stick of Crucial PC3200 and rebooted. At this point the recent furore on the forum was as nothing compared to my anguish at seeing "You gotta be kidding dumbass! The file C:\windows\system32\config\system is banjaxed! Repair this file by jumping through half a dozen hoops until exhausted, re-boot and get this message again" So, did that, and guess what? The message was right! Marvelous things computers.
So I gave up and took the ram out. (At this juncture I'd like to say that this was one piece of ram among many, all of which I KNEW to be good. They just came out of my gamer.) I decided to live with 512mb in the server.
Time passes and my eye falls upon said server and I thought I'd give it another go. Working on the assumption that it would have forgotten it's previous tantrum and behave. Not so. :( Incidently this all happens past the witching hour just as I think I'll be off to bed. BlueBall happened to still be up and I snivelled to him my worries. He sat up with me all night, searching the internet for the answer, of which there were many. Most were too complicated for me. I wanted a "click this, change that, re-boot" kind of answer. Came the dawn we gave up. Thanks BB.
In the morning I spied a bottle of Isopropanol on my shelf (just for medicinal purposes you understand) so I thought I dunk said ram in it. Popped it back into glowering server and booted up. Breath was bated (or was it baited?) and 'beep' so far so good. Doh! This time a different message! I didn't bother to read it, I simply mashed 'Enter'  :ranting: I turned to go and leave it to it's own devices when I heard the #1 tune 'Windows startup' I looked back and saw that windows had indeed started. Deep joy!
I hardly like to turn the machine off but it had to be done. Yay! It works!
Moral of this story? Keep all your little secret places clean or one day they'll stop working!

Isopropylalcohol? A bit harsh. The rest of us just take a shower
