Title: Concerning Language and behavior
Post by: Vargen on March 09, 2006, 02:49:12 PM
Over recent months the Officers have an increase in the amount of swearing in both the forums and in Guild chat.  More worringly we recently lost a member due to the language and behaviour in Guild chat as their son was often present at the computer during his dad's WoW time and the now ex-member could not continue to run the risk of him seeing a lot more than he should.

We all swear now and then, Officers included, but maybe it is time we cleaned our act up a bit and stopped the unnecessary swearing in Guild chat and on the forums.  Some of our members are younger, many of our members have children (I got none that I know of yet, but hey, there's time for them to track me down! ), so let's try to make an effort to clean up our act, we don't need the persistent swearing - we don't swear that way on TS, so it's certainly not necessary here.

I might not be a spotless example myself, but I will try to put in the extra effort to keep my language and behavior at a more mature level.
I will also try to limit my "one line" replys with no point to them. So no more :spam:

Not condoning it, but surely if he was that concered with searing in WOW itself he should have used the profanity filter to protect his children as IF chat is generally just as bad if not worse.

whiskey tango foxtrot ? oscar mike golf !!!

How about a 'trash' forum all the stuff that we want to post thats 'crude' and htose kinda things put them in a different forum, then if you want to read possibly offensive jokes etc . . . then you can . . if you dont want to . . don't enter it ?

This has happened quite alot on the other forums that ive noticed with similar rules which sensor people.

I totally agree with Stront, why turn the profanity filter off if it is going to offend the player or who ever may have access to the PC.

The game is rated 12+ and if a kid of that age can't take a bit of swearing, I feel sorry for him. I don't curse all the time. needless. It's often used to instead of a explanation mark. I beg everyone to download Monty Pythons audio clip that adresses the use of the magic F word. It puts the sting out of it. And yes this game is populated for the most by adults. He should have been aware of it and at least had the profanity filter on. We have free speech and the right to curse as much as we want (Yes to much cursing makes you look stupid and illiberate but that aint a crime now is it?). If people are offended why just say that this is enough. Most people respect that. I'm getting more and more upset about this controlfreak mentality of certain people here. We are not kids and you are not my parents neither. I am old enough to make my own decisions about what is offending or not.  As long as you don't break any laws go ahead in my book.

I think the move should have been more thought over than just seeing blindly free free free. Everything free has it hassles and we see it clearly now.
Remember. tomorrows sunday.

Sinap you c0c|< 5|\/|0|<1|\|G \/\/|-|0r3   *encrypted to prevent offense*

that sig isn't very nice, oddly, relevant here in fact, I'm far more offended by any apparent lack of respect than by generic swearing.

swearing can sometimes be unnecessary but insults are definitely downright offensive!
OFC I can take a joke like the next man, provided the next man isn't bastet :P so here's how It will be for me, in concordance with the 'treat as you would be treated' rule: If you insult me I will swear at you :P be you officer or not. reap what you sow and all that (but i provide interest ;))

Its not about being able to take the swearing at the age of 12, or more, maybe its more a concernec dad, which i respect 100%! Swearing is good for expressing a strong feeling, positive or negative.

But, i must admit i feel ashamed when im not even able to behave my language. im swearing alot, and i find it really annoying, its a bad habbit, that im personally trying to get rid of. maybe the one that left, just didnt want his son to end up with a child unable to talk without swearing.

Btw ive noticed a huge change in the general language in Guild Chat :)

Which way? There's more swearing now than there used to be, or less? Online i'm OK, but when actually talking i swear a lot, which is something i'm trying hard to cut down on :( I don't do it in front of my parents, so i'm not sure why I end up doing it so much at work and with friends.
