In a word. Yes.

A repair install will overwrite all the Windows system files with fresh copies from the CD, yet will leave the previous registry intact. All user profiles, data, and installed apps will still be there afterwards.

However, afterwards you will still need to download and apply all of the critical Windows updates and any service packs not included on your install disk.

Unfortunatly, a repair install for win XP doesn't fix a thing... Backup your gameprofiles and stuff like that, and start installing programs and games on a different partition of you harddrive (or even a different harddrive ;)).

You can use XP's NTFS mount to mount a partition to your %root%\Program Files\ folder and another partition to your Games\ directory and My Documents\ directory.

Finnaly MS picked something usefull up from linux :D

If you only have one harddrive thats not partitioned, may i suggest you you use PQ Partition Magic (http://www.soft32.com/download_151.html) to split your harddrive without loosing the info on it. I think the trials lets you do this without buying it, but if not, PM/mail me and ill see if i cant help you otherwise ;)

Doing an install repair rather than a repair might help. See http://forum.deadmen.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=9142 (http://forum.deadmen.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=9142) for full info and a link to instructions :)

I've sorted many problems with this on various peoples computers

Hmm, repair fixes the standard systemfiles like explorer.exe and that tango, but if you really mess up you XP install...

I agree, the repair might work, and it IS worth a try since it would save you allot of time, but i would still recommend using one partition/harddrive for your windows system files, and another for documents/programs/games blablabla :)
