Title: Driving rules
Post by: delanvital on March 24, 2006, 03:54:41 PM
I remember reading a post on RSC about the rules for driving F1 or something, a really nice article. It applies to most, since i deals with how to overtake, what flags mean etc - Anyone who know it or something similar? I have not been able to find it, or anything half as good again  :(

Rule one. Drive as though you have to (1) pay for the damage and (2) the guy in front is a big sucker who will beat your brains out!

Seriously though, the -=[dMw]=- way will get you through but here is a pointer or two. Although it's aimed at LFS the central theme does the job.
Thanks to CRC for letting me nick this. (http://www.cleanracersclub.org/crcweb/index.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=6)

Or this one, also LFS based (http://www.lfswiki.net/index.php/LFS_S2_Manual:Driving_Guide) Check out the 'CRC rules' link

if your car is more than halfway up the length of another car entering a corner and your on the inside then the other guy is supposed to back off as you have right of way as usually if he trys to comit he will take both out, thats a profesional go carting rule, so its probably the same as fia, altough i have known to be wrong.. ONCE

It's the one rule/guideline that I, personally, take issue with. In a computer game you don't have the peripheral vision necessary to implement this. You can't actually see anyone alongside until they're practically past. The counter argument is to use your glance left/right to see, but if you're heading into, or are commited to, a corner the last thing you want to do is glance left/right. My take on it is that the overtaker has no right of way until it is truly obvious. This is where dMw ethics come into play.
My 2c  ;)

The 3rd person chase camera views show up the overtaking car okay, but I'm finding it a lot easier to drive from the 1st person view in GTL (usually use chase in other games so I can see the slides) and the 1st person view allows no chance of seeing the potential overtaker. Glancing sideways is not advisable mid-corner as mentioned :)

3. Defensive driving: The lead driver is entitled to make 1 move to maintain his/her position and 1 move to return to the normal racing line before every turn.

I'd also take issue with the above, IMO a driver should not be limited to how many moves(?) to maintain his position when defending his lead, it should be upto the other drivers to force them into errors.

3. is correct. The acid test is to get behind someone zig-zagging down the back straight, blocking your every move and see if it feels right. My guess is you'd be screaming! I know I would along with the majority of drivers.

Defending your position is about not being bullied off your chosen line.
