Title: Having trouble finding CPU/Motherboard
Post by: Barley on April 01, 2006, 09:56:00 PM
Really having trouble at the moment finding an old CPU!  They're all going for a fortune on eBay, in fact so are the new CPU's!

I'm looking to build a small server, have all the hardware I need except a motherboard and CPU.  Server is mainly going to be for internet sharing, and for running a web server, all on either windows 2000 or XP.

Currently the hardware I have is this:

1GB PC3200 RAM
60GB IDE Hard Drive
CD-RW
Old crappy AGP graphics card

What CPU speed do you think I could get away with for running the server?  This will mainly determine what sort of motherboard I need to get.  I'm thinking it should probably be an oldish AMD processor, but it needs to be able to take advantage of the PC3200 RAM.

Any suggestions/ideas?

Anything up to an XP2400 can be had at a reasonable price from PC forums in a secondhand market......look at circa £35 each for mobo (decent spec - NF7Sv2 or A7N8X deluxe)and cpu.

Alternatively give Norm a shout (pm) on these forums as he may be able to provide some gear from a customer upgrade at a reasonable price. :)
