I want to set user privileges on a per-file basis in Win XP. Basically, what I'm looking for is an equivalent of chmod. I googled for it but got nothing. Any ideas? If it involves creating special user groups - fine, but I'd rather have a more direct approach. I know about shared folders, but that implies the entire folder, not individual files?
If there exists versions of chown and chgrp, that's a bonus.
And don't answer *nix... That's not an option. :rolleyes:
Well you can set permissions at a file level on a Windows server but I can't find an equivalent in XP. Seem to be that all you can do is share the folder for read or read/write. Are you sharing files in a home network or is it in a larger network with Active Directory?
You need xp pro and disable the "simple file sharing" options, should then enable you to set permissions on a per file level.
Oh , and you need ntfs on the drive partition.

Brilliant! That did it, and it also allows to change owner of files. A bit messy with lots of clicking, but does the job.
