Rapture, a fallen underwater utopia, is the fading remnant of civilisation's peak. Created by Soviet Andrew Ryan in 1946, it was once the perfect playground for society's elite. Just how did the discovery of a new species of sea slug send it into chaos?
The creature was found to secrete a substance known by Rapture's residents as 'Adam', possessing powerful healing abilities and physical and mental benefits. But it worked too well, and their society split into two factions in the struggle for control over Adam. War followed. In the year 1960, this is the shattered world you find.
Many games are touted as offering "truly non-linear experiences" or freeform worlds, but eventually deliver a standard on-rails shooter with godforsaken 'RPG elements'. We're almost numb to the claim. But when the people making such promises are the ones who gave us System Shock 2 and Thief, we sit up and take notice. In the case of BioShock, we're bolt upright.
A sadness permeates Rapture, and it's one the developer, Irrational, hopes will impact our involvement with the game. Survival is key, but how you accomplish this will be more a matter of ethics than grit.
All who remain in Rapture are dependent upon Adam, the two factions still opposed and fighting to possess the little that remains. In one of very many striking images, Adam is retrieved from dead bodies via the Gatherers - or as we might recognise them, small children. Kill them, and you have a great deal of the valuable substance. But you've just killed a child.
The Gatherers aren't completely defenceless. Each is accompanied by a Protector - a vast, hulking armoured being that exists solely to keep its companion alive. It's with both fear and remorse that you'll greet the sight of the hulking Protector gently holding hands with the tiny, innocent Gatherer.
Your time in Rapture will be spent learning the truth of what happened, in the manner you see most fit. Irrational intends to recognise our intelligence as gamers - an unusual act in itself for a developer. It'll provide us with a powerful sense of place, a motive, and an array of possibilities. The rest is going to be up to us.
We haven't had quite the odd, excited feeling that BioShock gives us since we first heard about Deus Ex. This is the developer most capable of a project on this scale, with the emotional maturity to deliver it honestly and powerfully. Try as we might, we can't keep our hopes down.
Oooohhh, sounds nice, I wonder about the enviroment it will be played in and such and AI of the bots. Nice find, if you've got more info about it, keep us posted.
For those people who are thinking "who the TANGO are Irrational?" (like i was)
They are the people behind SWAT4 and they were recently overtaken by Take2.
The pesudo sequeal to System Shock2 one of the best games of all time IMO. I am looking forward to it :)
And Theif is also a great serries hopefully they wont mess it up :)
lol, maybe i was too busy thinking "who the TANGO are 'irrational'?" to read the bit that says that they did Thief and System shock.
sounds nice.. nothing beats Dx tho..

To be fair the game is coming up to release, so it's better than opening up a new one. Also the game should be awesome. (Gotta put vista on just to get DX10 though)

We tried as hard as humanly possible to get it out to you guys simultaneously with the 360 demo, but we needed to make sure that it was perfect - that all drivers were ready, and that the game looked great on a huge variety of computers ... "Currently, the PC demo [is] in its final stages of testing and approval. We are pushing to get it out to you as soon as possible. It will be out during the month of August, and everyone is working at full capacity to deliver it to you before the game hits store shelves on August 21st."

Anyone know if an Audigy 4 is 100% direct X 9.0c compatible. I guess it is but I'd never heard of DX for sound card specs.
Also 8GB?! Thats quite alot.
Well steam has it on its books for $54.95. Thinking of buying it from there tbh so i don't have to move :P.
Just played the demo. What can i say, it's amazing. I am going to buy it on steam but am holding off to see if any last minute deals come up from online retailers.

It's on Play and Amazon for £25. Don't have to move either and it saves you money (when you take into account Tax and the conversion rate they use). I've pre-ordered it, it should arrive on the day of release (or if I'm lucky a day early...it wouldn't be the first time). The only downside is you can't play the very second of release.
Amazon are selling the limited edition tin box version for less than the standard version
Downloaded the demo.
Looks amazing - water very impressive.
But it plays like any other FPS, hack and slash and do this, do that. Think I'll give it a miss.

From an interview I saw, I think they had an entire separate team simply working on the watter effects.
Looks cool, whether my computer right now will handle it, I doubt.
There is a website you can go on to check, but basically you just have to check if you've got a above X1300 ATi (excluding X1550) and Above 7600 (? maybe) Nvidia.

It's not the same one I went on but it does exactly the same job. Infact I like this one better because it doesn't give a warning about my video card not being 512mb (only got 320mb).
The main test the game looks for in my opinion is Pixel Shader 3.0. When my brother ran the test on my old X850XT it said the processing power was fast enough but it wouldn't run the game. Which considering the card isn't that old was suprising. So it's worth a check.

It's sort of a mixture of genre's. However if you want to delve into the story there are opportunity's.

I'm agreeing with a Scot..
Let's turn down the brightness, throw some voices in there, feature water as we've done it very well.
Right mood set, let's fit you with an electric bolt, then we can pretend it's not an fps anymore.
Electrify, hit over head, rinse repeat. A bit jumpy, a good story, same old crap underneath, when is someone going to do something different?
I can't wait till it arrives. The demo is interesting, I've been holding off playing it myself, just watching others play it so I don't feel like I'm replaying as much. Comparing the XBox and PC versions though even without DX10 on it looks nicer on the PC, and with it it's a whole other leauge. (With both running through a PC monitor so it's not just the difference between a TV and PC Screen.)
Also about the other benchmark it was done by 3DMark, but I formatted since so won't be able to find the link unless my brother remembers it.
graphics are impressive, tho other then that it didnt do much for me...
Im getting the game tomorrow.:D

Could be worse, you could have decided on upgrading to Vista Ultimate (£115) and spending more on the graphics card to get DX10 (+ an extra £50)
(Bioshock is one of the first games to support DX10 - but you have to run in Vista to use it)

Activation fails every time. As my serial has a nice combination of 1s and 0s I've tried substituting for Is Ls Os. Pah!
One of the many forums where people get to shout at their game mentions that the activation server may be down ... again.:eyebrow:

With my activation code the 1's have the bit at the top to distinguish them, and all of the O's are the letter not the number. But if the server is down thats not much help.
Is the activation still required if you purchase through Steam?
Had the same issue here. Got the game at about 1pm, installed and tried to activate 5 or so times, then gave up in annoyance. Hunted around to see if a reliable crack was available for the activation yet, found none. Bookmarked the page explaining how to remove SecuROM from your system once the crack has come out, and went to watch some of the DVDs I got for my birthday.
Nipped upstairs for a pee mid film and decided to give it another go on the offchance while I was in the vicinity of the PC - wahey, product activated, so i'm having great fun playing away (thought to my shame I had to drop the difficulty setting from hard to med as I was getting utterly 0wned on hard. Constantly out of ammo and eve, so spawing in the vita-chambers every 30 secs or so and running in with the wrench).
Now I just have to wait for them to fix the bug that means even if you uninstall it doesn't give you one of your activations back. Fingers crossed by the time I spec up and get my new uber system they'll have got it sorted :ranting2:. They've got long enough, i'm not upgrading till AMD bring out their quad cores and I see how they spec up against Intel's and how it affects dual core prices.

They fixed the activation thing by making a program that de-activates it because the uninstall didn't work.
And I just played on Medium because I just knew it'd be too much for me...but I suppose if you charged up your wrench skills with Gene Tonics, and had a nice stealth skill it might be manageable taking mere chunks of health per spawn.
The big daddies on the other hand...I don't know, I doubt you'd be able to take enough down to complete the story without getting so bored of the game you throw your mouse through the monitor.
Game to aovid. Don''t support muppet software - Sony strikes yet again. When will they learn!
TL.
Meh. I thought the plot was awesome. If I was that bothered (now that i've got it working and completed the game) i'd install the game, complete it, then format/reinstall ym system, just to see the plot. i thought it was excellent.
And it made me cry a bit at the end, cos i'm a pussy :crying::P

I heard they were *working* on it. I haven't managed to *find* it anywhere yet.
Well I did the decent thing and bought a copy of the game on Steam and then acquired my DRM free version from other err... sources.
The game is nice but no System Shock beater. I am doing the be nice to the Little Sisters route...which is quite tough at the moment.
Job done game out....great game though:D
I reccommend that you dont give up on this game at any point ever, this game has a cracking third act.
He has to give it up....To me....Gimme gimme gimme Michel....:flirty:

It's a bloody pain that they have different steam regions. For $15 I'd have bought it again (I've got it on disk...but would much prefer to have it on steam). There are some many games ONLY available in the US and Canada. Games like Assasins Creed, Ghost Recon, Brothers in Arms, Farcry, Splinter Cell and more.
I would very much like to buy some of these through steam. They are in the shops over here, I don't see why steam is so rubbish with different prices, and not selling to us games we want.
