Hay guys, im looking to buy a new headset and am quite baffled.
I've seen quite a few ones that look decent, but im not sure if the usb ones im seeing are as good as the traditional ones that plug striaght into your sound card.

I use Speedlink Medusa's. They come in USB and "plug into sound card" flavours.
Make sure they send you one with a UK plug, cos mine's a PITA with its adapter.

ive recently purchased a set from sennheiser
headset (http://www.sennheisercommunications.com/eprise/main/SennheiserCommunications/com/Products/CNT05_Pro-Gaming?ProductId=PC160)
from overclockers. very nice sounds and a good amount of bass :D
I think what Frenzy wants to know (me too for that matter) is what sound quality loss is there (if any) if you use a USB headset as opposed to one which plugs into your nice expensive soundcard?
I use the Plantronics with a usb connection and the sound is superb. :D
Isn't the issue with USB connections that they have a soundacard built in, powered over the USB? Great if you want headphones that will work in anything with a USB port, but any EAX effects and such that your soundcard can do won't be passed to the 'phones (as I understood it at least. I mean if it did get passed like that what's the point of the USB connection as opposed to a normal one). I've seen a couple of USB connector cards that specifically say the USB plug has a builtin soundcard, and then have a 3.5mm jack from the USB card, so you can use them normally should you so wish.
If you have a nice soundcard then you might as well get non-usb headphones. Probably slightly cheaper for the same 'phones sans USB. I've got some 3.5mm-jacked plantronics plugged into an Audigy2 card (which I justified mainly due to the the firewire connection I required for my iPod!) and they make noise just fine :) Much better than speakers!

I noticed at the lan alot of people were using the above headphones including myself. I have the non usb variant and sometimes find it hard to work out which leads go into which socket :(. They are nice and cosy and keep my ears warm though :P. They even vibrate when you encounter explosions but have forgotten how to plug them in to the amp to allow them to do this :(.

Never used usb headphones so i wouldn't know. Sorry.
