Anyone got any old hard drives that they dont want/need any more?
I'm setting up my old pc to be used for DTP, and it's only got a 2Gb hard drive in it. It'll probably run Win98 or WinXP and MS Word and I dont think 2 gigs will cut it anymore, especially not with XP...
Also, does anyone know if you can buy MSword by itself anymore? Best deal I've found is £90 for a MSworks package that includes MSword2002
Sheepy's got all the hard-drives, he eats them !
You could try Open Office as a substitute for Word. It's just as good as MS Office and is free. I've used it in various forms for years. Saves files in word formt and has vector grahics, spreadsheetand presentation software as well.
ive got an old couple but they dont work.
They'll be useful then
Got a few lines on HDD's now. One ancient 8Gb 5.25" drive that "is a bit dodgy" and one 4Gb drive which sounds perfect. I think I swapped my old 4Gb HDD out to give to a housemate who was struggling with only 2Gb :?
It really needs to be industry standard word processing software because it'll be for editing books and such, so a recent version of MS Word is the only way to go really. I've found one MSWorks package which includes MSWord2002 and its the cheapest so far at £90.
Alternatively, does anyone know a word processor program for linux that can open edit and save .doc files in PC-Word format?
:D
...er yeah it's called Open Office. Like I said it can open and save in standard windows formats in Windows or Linux versions.
Have a read here

Quote# The ability to import and export many different types of documents and templates in a huge range of formats from HTML to MS Office XP. You can work seamlessly with your colleagues, school or friends, no matter what computer you use. Although we think the OpenOffice.org Open File Formats are technically superior many people are still locked into other products so you can set OpenOffice.org to use any other file format by default if you wish.
# Runs natively on almost every modern operating system except Mac OS X.
Smiley - you and your anti microsoft policy.
You have to accept that some folks wanna spend a bit of cash on something thats "industry standard". Not everyone wants your back street software.
I bet it isnt a proper word processor either, with that cat as an assistant to help me with my typing ! It purrs when I get whole sentences rihgt
God bless uncle Bill and his wonderful software company :D

It's developed from Sun's StarOffice. Sun just kicked micro$lop's arses round the courtroom over them breaking the Java agreement. Hardly a "back street" operation... :D
Still, people who rely on animated cats to help them write whole sentences are M$'s target audience...

Didn't purr for that one did it!
And that backstreet software developer must have been working in a hell of a lot of backstreets to turn over $12.5 billion last year

Sorry to hijack, but without Microsoft there is no PC industry, because no one wants to go back to the days of DOS.
Yes it's easy to poke fun and ridicule MS for their policies in comparison to newer companies like Sun but without Windows 3.1 the market would never have taken off like it did, or get the investment it did. We might all be using Apple Macs now 8O
I'm sure you'll post some snidey comebacks, but deep down you know I'm right. Shame on you if you can't admit it
The only comment I can make is that yes we would be using macs (can't see the problem there myself if they weren't any good they wouldn't sell) but have you not noticed how through out its life windows has been evolving to look like the mac gui*? Where do you think Bill Gates got the idea for windows from?
* A GUI for those that don't know is a graphical user interface.
Granted GFK, fair point.
Oh dear, why is it that whenever anyone talks about MS it just opens a can of very wriggly worms. Each to their own.
I stand by my comments, but I shall now cease all traffic on this because I can feel a ranting backlash from other forum users. 8)
Thats coz MS is a very wriggly company

A final piece of helpful advice. Most/many/some people in this forum are highly PC literate. They either work in I.T or have a great interest in it. They really know what they're talking about when it comes to the Internet, Software and PC use in general. Over the years they have seen the Internet and the world of I.T. grow and develope.
The humble person, especially those who clearly know little or nothing about the subject, would be advised to listen to their wise and sage words and to learn from them. They really do know what they're on about.

Without *IBM* there'd be no PC industry. Apart from Apples and probably the Amigas which would have been developed so such an extent that they could effortlessly tear the pants off a modern PC and roger it senseless...
Much the same way that Linux does to windoze.
DM
I agree, if there was no PC market then another machine would have been developed. As DM said, Apple and Amiga. And don't forget the Atari ST. Still used today in the music industry because of an amazing bit of foresight made the designers wire the MIDI ports directly into the comps clock.
I think the PC is flawed, badly. We are still restricted by 25 year old technology. And we're still on 32bit procs that debuted over 10 years ago! And the BIOS! Time that died. (I did hear that they are replacing the BIOS with something else.)
As far as OS's, I don't care what I use, as long as I can get my job done and have fun at the end of the day. Which is why I own a PS2. No OS to worry about, just stick the game in and away you go. Admittidly its only good for certain types of game, and a TV is no match for a PC monitor, but it is so simple.
Imagine if Sony decided to give making a new computer a go :)
IBM lost their premier position pretty quickly after initial success because they rested on their laurels and lost touch, allowing Macs and MS to gain a foothold with their entrepreneurial style. It's only now in the last few years that IBM are getting back to focussing on the customer and reaping the rewards.
Yes, without MS something else would have come along, but then you're entering into the world of the hypothetical, so it all becomes a bit, well, hypothetical
PCs still have a bad repuitation today because of the days when it was aimed at "highly literate pc people" and not the mass market (as recently quoted in a leading PC games magazine, to prove I'm not rambling). At least with the Amiga and it's equivalents it was always easy to use.
"PC literates" will always choose a better set of software and OS, and good on them, but then they aren't the majority, and it's ma and pa with the two kids that bring in the investment from far and wide.

Oh my god I completely missed this post :!: Sometimes they show as read before I actually read through the thread, and they get missed. :(
Obvioulsy this has decended into a joke and you're just trying to wind us all up now. I for one ain't biting matey
The O/Ss out there are good for what they made for, which is:
Linux/Unix: reliable servers esp in public environment
Apples MACOS: great for use in the media scene. Used to rule for DTP.
Windows: mine sweeper
oh ok so windows makes for a nice desktop interface for users.
should I change the topic of my first post to read "wanted: old HDD (oh, and windows bashing contest)"
lol yeah seems people have kinda gone off the subject
Posts always go wildly off topic......it's the rules :!:

Hi all can some body help me out........
Does any body understand the cstrike bits you can change like....
cl_updaterate
cl_cmdrate

I have broadband
And any other tip's that might be helpfull plz.
Swiss
POW
that one came out of left field :)
I forget exactly whats what, but I wrote myself a little script for rates a while back so I can change them by pressing just one key :) I read a little post on the bygames forums that recommended something like the following for cable connections:
cl_cmdrate 60
cl_updaterate 40
rate 25000
The script below works great most places except on WWCL servers where the "developer" command isnt allowed and you have to check the console for the echo message.
alias vlorates "cl_cmdrate 30; cl_updaterate 30; rate 7000; developer 1; echo VERY LOW rates set (30-30-7000); developer 0"
alias lorates "cl_cmdrate 40; cl_updaterate 30; rate 10000; developer 1; echo LOW rates set (40-30-10000); developer 0"
alias midrates "cl_cmdrate 60; cl_updaterate 40; rate 25000; developer 1; echo CABLE rates set (60-40-25000); developer 0"
alias hirates "cl_cmdrate 100; cl_updaterate 40; rate 25000; developer 1; echo LAN rates set (100-40-25000); developer 0"
alias toggle_rates trates1
alias trates1 "alias toggle_rates trates2; vlorates"
alias trates2 "alias toggle_rates trates3; lorates"
alias trates3 "alias toggle_rates trates4; midrates"
alias trates4 "alias toggle_rates trates1; hirates"
unbind KP_ENTER
bind KP_ENTER toggle_rates
many thanks for help will give it a shot ta.
