Title: Dust behind LCD
Post by: Wordan on May 20, 2006, 08:40:02 PM
I made a silly mistake... I cleaned my monitor with a damp cloth then used a bit of compressed air to blast out some dust at the edges. Now I have dust between the LCD and the backlight. I had a brief search in google, but didn't come acrossing anything yet.

Anybody successfully cleaned the inside of their monitor before?

I have a 19" LG ultra slim

sounds like a fun day of juggling with glass panels, circuit boards, keeping records of which tiny plug went where and trying not to lose tiny screws... take pictures of the carnage? :D

I imagine while you can probably open up the LCD to get at the bits inside you should be suitably careful with all the bits. Not sure how easily the panel separates out into glass front and backlight etc, but if it's badly dusty you could give it a go (if further air-blasting fails to improve the situation?) From what I've seen of LCD-dismantling it should be somewhat fiddly, though not terribly complex. Obviously don't use anything potentially corrosive to clean it and try not to drop the panel sections.

The monitor is still under warranty, there are no screws to be seen on the back of it, and more air dusting made no difference. Do you think they would take it back?

There are a few dust spots behind it but this is the worst

It might look like nothing but it's very irritating. It gives the text a third dimension

That's what I would do - claim ignorance and get them to replace it ..

lol, I'm not entirely fond of the insurance fraud idea, we pay enough for car insurance in this part of the country probably because of the above mentioned.

I baught it from ebuyer, I'm worried about sending it back, partly because of how long they take and what condition i'll get it back in, but I don't want to try open it and break all the plastic clips in the process or have them notice I void the warranty

What to do!

Be straight with them. Tell them there is dust behind the LCD and ask them please to fix it :D

Now that's the answer of a person who works for one of the worlds largest computer hardware support companies LOL.

And it probably good advice.  8)

No point going in saying it was already dusty a) unless you got it a week ago or B) you know what you're talking about. Ask for a fix under warranty and plead ignorance. Dust what dust, nothing to do with me, no officer I only give it a light wipe from time to time with a dry static free lint free cloth wear anti-static gloves in an anti-static suit on an anti-static mat

Thanks for the input, I guess I'll just have to ask ebuyer about returns.
