There are/were problems yesterday with the servers crashing repeatedly, which may or may not be related to new maps - haven't checked all the logs yet.
The biggest problem is running the servers "raw" and not via halfd. Halfd monitors the servers and attempts to restart them when/if they crash - if it can't get it up after 10 tries (oo-er, missus) it gives up and the server stays down. It also sends a nice email to admins@deadmen informing them of problems. Raw servers die, stay dead and keep schtumm.
If any of the Network Elves would like instruction in this arcane knowledge, it might be an idea to set up some sort of training conference thingy on ICQ - ideas, people?
We need more than 1 or 2 people with knowledge and access to blackadder's innards in case of problems like this in the future...
DM
I am not a network elf but I could try to help out if needed. I think it is a good idea with the training though. If not I could at least put down a html-page of what to do that would be available over the internet if similar events happens.
Cheers,
Excellent idea DM.
Is there a Linux version of, say, VNC? What I was thinking is we could fire up a Teamspeak server and you could talk about (and show) the innards in question.
I'm not sure it's wise to give too many people access to this sort of stuff. I would suggest that initially it's myself and Gandy and if we need to increase on that we can.
VNC was developed for Linux. :) Unfortunately, setting up a secure ssh/VNC connection isn't that straightforward - which is what we'd need if we're going to run sessions on an Internet-facing server.
Better to log on via ssh as admin then switch to root.
DM
I'd lurv to help out and be involved in this sort of thang :D I have both the time and the inclanation.
Just tell me when and where and I'll go do it........hell if necessary I'll drive over to Oldie's and we can go through it together...

When's best for you DM?
What will we need?
