Title: Gfx - best bang for the buck
Post by: delanvital on June 06, 2006, 03:22:04 PM
I need to replace my Asus Radeon 9600XT. I have been crusing charts at Tom's hardware and various sites. As usual it is hell to make up your mind with a card for every tiny segment.  I have been using nvidia, and would prefer ATI again but not a must. Needs to be AGP. Will be coupled with (for a while) an Athlon XP 3000+ Barton and 1,5GB's of RAM. I don't need the absolut latest in graphics detail nor resolution. Just so I don't have to go below 1024... no need for AA :)

My ideas are along the lines of an ATI X800XT/256 for about £140 here... but I can see some 6800GT's close on the bang/buck ratio :)

No strings attached, what would you recommend - and why? And perhaps a good place to buy in the UK? (If it is cheaper than here I might do that)

Thanks a bunch!  :D

I'll sell you a second hand one of these:

for £150 :D

Only used for about 3 months and then I bought a 7900GT/512

I know the feeling! I dno't want to spend more money upgrading my SocketA + AGP + IDE + DDR1 rig as none of the components I buy now will work with a shiny new upgraded rig. Grit yer teeth and wait for Conroe or delve into AM2 / 939 I guess could be options? Having said that our SoA systems might carry on ticking over for some time yet! I just resent spending any more money on mine knowing it's already obsolete <_<

keep your eyes out for a 7600gs on AGP - seem to recall reading about it somewhere like the Inquirer linking to some chinese website (MSI card I think)

Also you might find a 7800gs card 2nd hand somewhere if you're really lucky...
edit: looks like you're in luck :D
