Title: Broadband for mother-in-law?
Post by: Anonymous on June 11, 2006, 01:43:44 PM
Does that sound like a fair swap?  :roflmao:

OK on to the serious question.

Looking to put broadband into mother in laws house. She lives in a non-cable area so it will have to be ADSL. She is not a heavy internet user so a basic package will suffice. She does have a BT line and number and lives in a city so exchange distance shouldn't be an issue.

So fella's what can you recommend? Pref cheap but a bit of quality thrown in won't be bad :D

Well I use BT and it works, not sure about price comparisons as I don't pay for it.

I assume you've checked the usual sources, //www.adslguide.org ?

Nildram.

I've been using them for over 3 years now. Service and support are excellent. UK based phone support as well.

I put the inlaws on Euro1net, crappy looking site but seems a good deal for what they needed. They haven't had any problems yet. (had it for a few months). They had good reviewss on ISP Review (when i last checked) (Euro1net on ISPReview (http://www.ispreview.co.uk/review/censura.php?cmd=details&itemid=483))

Its a long contract though, I think they signed up for 24 months. Works out at £10 a month. Might be too much if u think prices wil come down in the future.

the other thing to checkout is talktalk, my bosses Dad uses it and its been good. But.. theres a 6 month waiting list for it (AFAIK). I dont know anything about Orange/Wanadoos free package, might be worth looking at.

I use plus.net, £15 for a month up to 8Mb and 3GB traffic usage 1600-0000hrs. Up to 50GB outside that, hence I download during the day ;-)

Never had any real issues with them.

I'ive used //www.freedom2surf.net for work and have found them superb.

No problems getting through to technical support and very set up.

The have a home package (8mb) from £13.99 per month.

However, if she's an infrequent user then, in the pipeline, pay as you go boradband is being rolled out by several companies.

One for certain that has already done it is bulldog.

another is IC24

Articles on PAYG:

This PAYG is what I'm waiting for for my in-laws as, like yours, they're not going to be using the net much just for booking flights and researching hotels etc

Why not try this site? It'll make a recommendation based on what you want to do, price and what is available in your area.

Just had a look. Useful site. PlusNet seems like a suitable package but has anyone heard good or bad about them?

Been using them for a while now, plus the Father in Law signed up too. They just received plaudits for their service and I've never had any real issues with them. Their support line is 0845 and they've an online call-ticket service too.
Connections are pretty fast and reliable in my experience.

If you do make the jump, let me know so I can get a 50p referral discount, I can provide a link

ADSLguide.org (opr was it .net?) used to be what I used to pick an ISP. Useful site for pricing, user reviews, etc.

We've been with plusnet since 2000 and not had any real issues as far as I can remember. They seam to be getting tons of complaints lately though as they seam to be making a lot of changes, and well, I wouldn't want to have to phone them.... On premier packages(not sure if Plus package is the same) they priortise traffic so at peak times peer to peer can slow down, but on the upside game pings are still good... not that your mother-in-law will notice.

Another thing to keep in mind is BT's new ADSLMax 8Mb sounds good but aparently they didn't increase the backhaul from most exchanges which means more contention and slowdowns at peak times.

Well i'm glad your plusnet account is working for you. Personally, i've had nowt but trouble since they introducted traffic prioritising and such. I've tried to get back in to BF2 on DMW a few times, but my ping never drops below 150 now, with frequent spikes a lot higher, where it was around 40 or so before they introduced this traffic prioritisation stuff.

Wordan lives in Northern Ireland which might explain the differences, then again it may not :)

Blimey. TBH I am a fan of traffic prioratisation(if it'd work). It seams logical.  I find my pings to be excellent, I am pretty sure they are better than they were. There were a few problems with some of my pings when they started using it, but those were long sorted.

EDIT: yea I noticed the DMW server ping's were quite high humm...

I'm on a Plusnet connection.  Have been for the past three years.  Service seems as reliable as it always was.  Looking at all the horror stories, maybe I've been lucky?

Gaming ping did go down the swannee a couple of months ago, but is back to normal now.

Carrot: is the exchange you connect to suffering from capacity issues?  (See here (http://usertools.plus.net/exchanges/))

We go through the same BT network and use the same plus.net servers I think. Only difference is there is some water inbetween us  (edit)And maybe a little less exchange contention :P

It would appear you are right good sir. Over a month after PlusNet/Force9 had started their traffic prioritising I was still having issues, and gave up checking. A new check just now shows my ping as being 28.

Tasty :dribble:

Now i'll have no excuses for those plane crashes.
