Title: Important!! User Account Passwords & Bug Reports
Post by: TeaLeaf on July 08, 2006, 06:41:53 PM
PASSWORDS
The forum upgrade did not correctly transfer passwords for user accounts. ALL USERS are requested to reset their password by using the in-built password recovery facility. This will prompt an email to your registered email address containing a url link which you must then click on to verify that the server should reset your password. The reset password will then be sent to you in a SECOND EMAIL.

BUG REPORTS
The forum upgrade went relatively smoothly for such a massive forum, but amongst the 135,000 posts and hundred or so forum topics we are bound to have made a mistake or two in forum permissions etc. If you spot ANY errors please PM a detailed bug report to me immediately and we will attend to it ASAP.

AVATAR UPLOADS
Members will need to upload their avatars again as the migration process did not transfer these correctly and caused a crash when we tried to include them.

USER CP
You will need to go to your User CP and Edit Options make updates and changes to your preferred default settings as the import will not have transferred all settings correctly. Primarily you might want to make sure that you correct your Signature, and re-upload Avatars and make sure that you have ENABLED the private messaging system.

TWEAKING
The forum software is new and whilst the upgrade took 9 hours there is still much work to do to bring some of the visual niceties back to life! Please bear with us whilst we make the cosmetic changes to your new forum and if you think we have missed something then please PM me and we'll take a look and see if it is a deliberate change or something that we need to act upon.

Thank you.

TL.

You may also have to empty your private message folder. I had deleted all my PMs on the old bulletin board buyt the migration brought 276 back so my inbox was alsmost full. Go check people :)

Yep, it appears that IPB only soft-deleted PMs and never *reall* deleted them.  So please go empty your mail boxes!

Looks like you've done a great job with the transfer to the new forum.  Apart from some modification of the links in my signature, everything else seems to work just great :worship:

However, there are just a few small "issues" that I would like to comment on - some stuff that I miss from the old forum.
If it's possible to implement here as well I don't know, but I thought it wouldn't help to share my thoughts ^_^
In my oppinion, it was very usefull the way it was earlier where you instantly could see what threads were sticky and which one not, due to that nice separate "frame" they were placed in
Earlier you could also find it at the bottom, which made it very easy to navigate out of the thread and back to the forum you came from when done reading/posting in it.
Yes, I know you can just as easily use back button in your browser, but that will make those icons showing what threads have new posts and so on not update properly
Earlier you had the possibility to mark and quote several posts at once, which I think is a major advantage.
If anything of what I've said here is wrond in any way, please bear with me.  It's pretty late, and I'm both tired and a bit drunk as well 8)

  • On the last forum, there was a very good division between the sticky threads and the normal threads.  This is now gone.
In my oppinion, it was very usefull the way it was earlier where you instantly could see what threads were sticky and which one not, due to that nice separate "frame" they were placed in
  • The bread crumbs list (the thingy that shows you where you are atm in the forum hierarchy) is now only placed on top of the page.  That does so that when I have read to the bottom of the page I need to scroll all the way back up again to be able to click it.
Earlier you could also find it at the bottom, which made it very easy to navigate out of the thread and back to the forum you came from when done reading/posting in it.
Yes, I know you can just as easily use back button in your browser, but that will make those icons showing what threads have new posts and so on not update properly
  • When reading and replying to a thread, you can now only quote a single post at a time.
Earlier you had the possibility to mark and quote several posts at once, which I think is a major advantage.
  • I also miss the feature "Mark this forum as read", cause sometimes there is a small bug that makes a forum show as containing threads with new posts even when you've read 'em all.
If anything of what I've said here is wrond in any way, please bear with me.  It's pretty late, and I'm both tired and a bit drunk as well 8)

I agree with every point here. But mostly i think the forum is messy, it lacks the clean-ness. It was way easier to find new threads at the old forum. And wich threads were dead, and wich had posts in them and wich were stickied was much easier to see on the old one. But still, good job :)

Select "Quick Links" from the menu bar, the second option on the popup menu is "Mark Forums Read". I too liked the ease of access to to that command in the old forum so to compensate I have a shortcut on my desktop now to th "Mark forums reads" command. If you want to do it the URL is :

The current look is the default template for the forum.  It has not yet had any 'design effort' put into it, the role yesterday was simply to complete the migration which we did.  You'll need to hold on for 4-8 weeks minimum I suspect whilst we complete the customisation, most of which we haven't even started yet.  Different colour schemes, buttons etc can make the 'look' seem cleaner, the division between read and unread or stickied and non-stickied seem so much clearer, so this is not the look we aim to stick with for the future.  We can't promise that we'll make it 'perfect' for everyone, but it will be changing.

Logout.  Why the dialogue box confirmation? Of course I want to log out - that's why I clicked on "Logout".  I don't need another box asking me if I'm sure...

Quote from: Threbrilith... I also miss the feature "Mark this forum as read" ...

Within each forum there's a menu item at the top called 'Forum Tools'. This contains a link to 'Mark Forum Read'.

At the bottom of each page there's a link called 'TOP' which takes you to the top of the page where you can access the breadcrumbs (this annoys me too - Grrrrr).

At the bottom of the main forum page before that 'stats' section is a link called 'Mark Forums Read'.

The other issues you mention will be looked into. There are plenty of VB addons out there that I'm sure will give us the functionality we want.

It'll have to be TL or OB as I've lost access to the admin side of things until they get their breath back and prioritise any fixes.

That can be changed in the options easily enough. It's like it is now so you can see what post you are replying too. If it was just active then it'd be put at the end.

From Help:

QuoteQuick Reply
If you enable Quick Reply, a box will appear on the showthread.php page allowing users to reply to the current thread without needing to load the full newreply.php page.

When Quick Reply is enabled, you may specify whether or not users must click the Quick Reply icon in order to start typing in the Quick Reply editor.

If you choose not to require a click, the system will not know to which post a user is replying, making both the threaded and hybrid display modes non-sensical.

We strongly recommend that you set the option to require a click if you use Quick Reply and have Threaded Mode available on your forums.

so there :narnar:

Bdw, one more quick question: is it possible to make that window containing smilies (which now has two columns instead of one as earlier) open with the width of it fitting those two columns?

This is nothing but a slight blemish, but I thought I should ask anyhow :)

alls gone smoothly for me so far*, and the on-going tweaks are making it seem more "homely" as they are applied.
It's a bit like moving house...it takes a while to get stuff into the right place and feels a bit new for a while.
well done and thanks for your hard work guys:worship:

*I have chosen "no email notification" in my options, so that I can choose which threads I get emails about...I now get an email for every reply to that thread, which soon fills my inbox....
on the old forum, I would only be notified once, no matter how many replies, until I visited the thread again.
Is there anyway to get that method back?
(it's more than likely I haven't set it up correctly tho:blush2: )

When I've been inside the "Silver Oak Gauardians" sub forum under "World of Warcraft" and read all the posts there, and afterwards goes back out to "World of Warcraft", "SOG" sub forum still shows the icon indication new posts.  I always have to use the "Mark Forums Read" feature to fix it...  But it's only in this particular forum I've noticed it though :eyebrow:

k cheers for the info. Regrettably I can't fix it as I have still to be added to the forum admin site after the move. However, I'll drop a PM to TL, OB and Gandy to see if one of them can fix it for those affected.

Keep the findings coming people, we'll get all the probs ironed out quicker that way :)

Could you perhaps adjust the limit of number of pictures, and perhaps also separate the picture count from the smilies count?

As it is now, smilies also count as pictures, and the limit is sat to max 4, so when I quoted a post with two smilies, and I aslo used a small image in my post, I was limited to only use one smilie in my own post :eyebrow:

You shouldn't have to sign in every time. I don't believe anyone else is having that problem. Could be a cookie left from the old site that's confusing it.

Oh, and images, I've upped that now as the default is rather stingy.

Title: More feedback
Post by: Bob on July 11, 2006, 11:38:10 PM
Hi, it's me again - I just have a few more things I would like to give some feedback to

First of all, when you edit your posts, you no longer see the post with "This post was last edited by on the ", and that's not a good thing.  I assume it's important that one can see if and when a post has been edited

Secondly; when replying to a post, there is quite much "stuff" put between the area where you write your reply and down to the list of posts.  Just take a look at this screenie:
(http://img124.imageshack.us/img124/4500/postreply1gc.th.jpg) (http://img124.imageshack.us/img124/4500/postreply1gc.jpg)
Often when posting in a thread, you're replying to one of the more recent posts, and than it's a good advantage to be able to actually see those posts without having to do much scrolling.
Both the "Post Icons" area and the "Additional Options" area could be positioned either on the sides or on top (or perhaps possible to remove if you'd like that) of the area you write your message in.  That way the most recent posts in the thread will show up just below where you're writing

I've also mentioned this before, but it didn't seem like anybody took any notice of it, so I'm just gonna say it again 8)

when you quote stuff, you don't see the date/time of the post you are quoting, and you don't get that back-link functionality either.

That's all for now :byebye:

Edit: just testing to edit to see if Gandalf is correct
Title: Important!! User Account Passwords & Bug Reports
Post by: Gandalf on July 12, 2006, 08:05:44 AM
It should put the edited by thing in there. However, I believe you have a few minutes grace to edit your post where it won't add that so you can correct simple typos, etc.

If you try editing your post now, it should add that edited by bit at the end.
Title: Important!! User Account Passwords & Bug Reports

cool, as for your other suggestion. I'm reluctant to make too many template changes yet as we're going to be looking at a complete style change shortly.

However, I don't think there'd be room to stick that down the side, not everyone runs the browser at full screen full res. If it was down the side on my screen, I'd be scrolling side to side all the time!

One to think about.

Is anyone going to fix the login forwarding URL?  I go to http://www.deadmen.co.uk/forum/ (http://www.deadmen.co.uk/forum/) , login (still manually because it still won't save my username and pass despite deleting every cookie I could find on all the PCs I use to browse - both Linux and windoze) and the forwarding doesn't work (not with FF anway), and clicking on any of the links/buttons takes me to the main Deadmen webby, where I have to click on the forum link to get back here.<_<

Don't suppose we could have the old forum reinstated could we?  This one's a bit, well, shite, to be honest.

Oh, and I'll take the "well it works OK for me" followups as read, just to save the usual suspects from the effort of contributing their 0.00002p worth.

I've had a quick look through my cookies in Firefox. I have cookies for:

deadmen.co.uk and forum.deadmen.co.uk

Tried deleting both lots? You probably have but it would be daft of me not to check :)

I'm confused about URL forwarding. Not sure what you mean. I just have a bookmark to:

http://www.deadmen.co.uk/forum/search.php?do=getnew

Which gets me all the posts since last visit. (PS I have tried original URL and that does work OK for me - you got DNS caching anywhere?)

There's no point in bookmarking anthing because I have to log in - manually - every TANGOing time.  Allow me to expand, ranting-stylee:

When I do log in I sit and look at the non-functioning redirect for a bit until it's time to click on a link that takes me out of the forum to the deadmen site just so I can click on the forum link to finally get to where I wanted to go in the first place - where previously I just used one click on one bookmark in the old forum.

Quote from: BlueBallNo, that would be the "I'm sick of you throwing your toys out of the cot and ranting at people" attitude!

It's not a rant at people per se, just crap software I'm ranting about.  For instance I'm writing this on a brand new, pristine Linux installation.  I went straight to the forum, logged in, told it to remember me (the redirect worked this time) looked at a thread, logged out and closed the browser.

With me so far? Good.

I opened the browser and went to the dMw forum - guess what?  No details remembered.  Nothing to do with cookies, DNS caches, sunspots or the price of cheese in Ipswich.  That leaves the browser or the forum software.  FF worked fine on the old forum, it still works fine on other forums doing as its told and remembering login details on every PC I use it on.

The only place it doesn't work is this forum.

AFAIK, no-one was asked about changing the forum, nor was anyone asked to do any testing before it was implemented, just wham-bam there you go, like it or lump it.  OK, that's your privilege as admins, but if it causes problems the attitude shouldn't be "sort it out yourself".

Still, If that is the attitude, that allow me to respond in the same forthright manner by inviting you to shove your forum at least as far as your colon.

Doggers,

Off Topic:
Much as it dissappoints me to say so, your attitude is unacceptable.  Please remember the standards you are meant to adhere too.  As co-founder of dMw you helped set the standards originally.

Back on topic:
Re the url forwarding.  I'm glad you find this to be working for you now.

Re testing, yes things were tested, so you stand corrected.  We didn't just jump in blind - a considerable amount of time went into testing before we did the live migration.  More changes to style, content are due shortly, the changes to be rolled out are made possible by the software we now use.

Re being asked about the changes.  Yes people were asked about the changes: the relevant people discussed it as part of the overall plans for the community.  This does not mean all members were consulted about any changes, the decisions were taken by the Admins responsbile for running the community, much as you took decisions when you ran the clan.  You better than most know that these are not decisions we just jump into, but are well thought through and carefully considered.

Re the cookies.  Every now and then I lose cookies on a site whether or not it is this site or some other and irrespective of whether I am using IE or FF.  This site seems to work for me and the vast majority of other members, many of whom use FF.  I am not saying there is not a problem, but it appears that if there is one it is an unusual one.  I will therefore, on your behalf, spend some of my time at home today researching this to see if this is a known problem and if there is a solution.

I hope this explains things better for you.

This is odd..

Firefox -> trying forum.deadmne.co.uk

I get the following error.

QuoteERROR

The requested URL could not be retrieved

While trying to retrieve the URL: http://forum.deadmen.co.uk/ (http://forum.deadmen.co.uk/)
 The following error was encountered:
  • Zero Sized Reply
Squid did not receive any data for this request.
Your cache administrator is support@cspencerltd.co.uk (support@cspencerltd.co.uk).

  Generated Fri, 21 Jul 2006 13:43:45 GMT by proxy.cslnet (squid/2.5.STABLE1)
Now I try www.deadmen.co.uk/forum/ (http://www.deadmen.co.uk/forum/)

Works fine. Try forum.deadmen.co.uk and it produces same error.

Now i goto IE and again try forum.deadmen.co.uk.. works fine.

Back to firefox and try forum.deadmen.co.uk and guess what... it works again.

Conclusion.

None, I can reach the forums, I haven't had any problems with login in, cache, read/unread posts. Just this wierd Firefox problem of spacking out, then working again after trying IE.

EDIT:

bit of digging around squid and I find this

http://www1.it.squid-cache.org/Doc/FAQ/FAQ.pdf (http://www1.it.squid-cache.org/Doc/FAQ/FAQ.pdf)

Quote11.51 Why do I sometimes get Zero Sized Reply?
This happens when Squid makes a TCP connection to an origin server, but for some reason, the connection
is closed before Squid reads any data. Depending on various factors, Squid may be able to retry the request
again. If you see the Zero Sized Reply error message, it means that Squid was unable to retry, or that all
retry attempts also failed.
What causes a connection to close prematurely? It could be a number of things, including:
1. An overloaded origin server.
2. TCP implementation/interoperability bugs. See the 14 (System-Dependent Weirdnesses) section for
details.
3. Race conditions with HTTP persistent connections.
4. Buggy or miscongured NAT boxes, rewalls, and load-balancers.
5. Denial of service attacks.
6. Utilizing 14.2.7 (TCP blackholing on FreeBSD).

Doesn't help me much. It may just be how my work have configured squid, or the differences between fhow irefox and IE send headers, maybe after IE has worked it effects future calls to that webserver.

Anyway, thats me done.

The only time i have firefox releated problems is when the profile gets corrupt. Try exporting you bookmarks etc and deleting the profile, but back it up first.
