Title: Strykers Theme Nights
Post by: Dr Sadako on March 16, 2003, 12:34:11 PM
Sounds like an interesting idea but if we have it every other week it could be too much on our modem members. If we compile say 5 theme nights in advance then we could both send them out on CD and put them on the homepage way in advance.

Just make sure to put the separate maps either in the downloads section to the homepage or in an e-mail to me. Please use my work e-mail: mats.lundberg@materialkemi.lth.se where I can recieve big files as attachements.

If you put them directly in the downloads section (of the homepage) make sure to create new folder e.g. theme01, theme02 etc with the separate maps. If we don't we will have a mess. I am in the doing of cleaning up the files we have there now actually. ;) Afaik it is only me, Doggers and Stryker that have access to that account.

Who has access to uploading maps to the game servers?

To answer your last question first - I can upload maps to the server.

Theme nights - I agree in principle but with a couple of caveats.

1. One a month is plenty IMHO (first Friday of every month perhaps).
2. I will not be involved in the running of these. I'm not being negative about this - just a question of time (mine).

The other thing to consider is bandwidth. Stryker has already mentioned that we are in danger of impacting on Crosswired's costings. If we continue to place large-ish mappacks for D/L by all MH regulars then surely we risk overstepping the boundary.

I'm keen to make dMw a success, yes once a month is plenty (in after thought).  Lets try it oldie.... and thanks for thinking of the business, with any hope this will only mean one extra game per month with much fun to be had.  If ever the downloads become a pain I could move them to a server we have in london with lesser costs.....  it would only mean updating the link to the theme packs off the main site.

Good man.

Cheers,

I am OK to put some time towards this sort of thing.

One a month would be OK, but do we want to consider less frequent events?  We have 5 matches per week at the moment, a LAN just around the corner and a map rotation review again in late June/early July.  Is once per month too often?  What about once every 2 months- this would almost fit in with prepping say 6 map packs for 6 theme nights - this would cover us for a whole year.  Otherwise we'll inevitably going to be asking peeps to download new theme maps on a very regular basis and have a heck of  alot of prepping to do each month..... so we ought to give the frequency special attention before we decide.

Then we need to decide on the themes - and we should do that here.  By all means we should ask for suggestions on the forums (and a few have already been posted), but we should agree what and when here first before announcing it to the MHPCS public.

Then and only then can we get on and compile the map packs.  I have no problem compiling them again - and I promise not to include my pldecal.wad file this time     I can upload them directly to Sadako's ftp and he can link them to the website from there....

Thoughts peeps?

yeah good points tealeaf.  maybe the first fri of every other month would be a better frequency.

I'd hope if fun was had by all they would attract some attention and keep peeps interested.
