Title: UK and Standby mode
Post by: Gorion on July 17, 2006, 11:59:23 AM
The United Kingdom Government is to ban the standby switch which is responsible for billions of tons of wasted fuel in the UK and worldwide.

The ban, which will be imposed on all new electrical goods being sold in the UK, will help the government reach its target to reduce the amount of fossil fuel it burns, its also part of the UK government's energy saving plan which not just affects computers and electrical goods.

However, since standby mode in computers is software activated it looks as if computer manufactures are going to have to release patches to disable standby to comply with the law.

Well i think it will half backfire, since i set my computer on standby when i am not actively using it. However if id had no standby i would just leave it on. Also most standby are canceld by remote, where off is normaly a switch on the tv itselfs.

PC-wise you have a good point! Someone must have thought of that? Or maybe they did not realize that PC's are used differently.

well ... all they need to do is police devices which, when in "standby", still eat up a stupid amount of power. For most things you might as well implement a remote on/off rather than a standby. The power a receiver like that needs is miniscule (think watch battery lasting 5 years small - 5mw or something) Most modern tvs etc still use several watts.

remember it's a ban on new devices, not a ban on old ones (yet ;))

The fact they havent invested in new forms of power and the addiontional power staions that are required over the last decade is the reason for the shortfall. Demand is outstripping supply and its not the public that's to blame. Whats next banning heating in winter?

They do have a point though, a lot of energy is wasted on standby modes. i think fe. that a computer on standby still consumes 50-75% of idle energy, and even when totaly switched off still consumes 25% odd. There are computer manufacurers that now say that you should switch off the power using a powercable with a switch (off then is a hard off).

Not to mention that there is also a greatly reduced fire hazard, youd be amazed how many items in standby catch fire.

I'm all for it.
If you DON'T need to leave it on then don't leave it on standby, switch it off!
