What should i be looking for guys when i go for ADSL (as in modems).
Any help would be appreciated.
Go for a adsl router - they generally have less latency in them....a quick browse of adslguide will confirm this for you Smite. When I was mistaken told I could have ADSL ( :x ) I had decided to go for the ASUS AAM6000EV from Solwise.

works great, easy to use and has a fairly competent port blocking firewall.
And it also works with on-line games :) I'd tried two other routers before, and CS never worked. They were the vigor USB2200 (steer clear of this POS) and a 3com 612, both made CS lockup in seconds.
The 715 has been fantastic, just one thing. Don't use the 'get new servers' in CS as it will overload the router with UDP traffic and the router will lockup. This is documented in their forum.

I got my router/switch from Broadband Buyer (http://www.broadbandbuyer.co.uk/) I think they are based in Milton Keynes and seem to carry a wide variety of products for adsl and cable (no I don't work there) The cable modem was provided by ntl and this box enables me to connect all my pcs to the internet via the one modem. There is plenty of info on the site in their guides/forum section.
help me get a better connection than 44 kps 8) my average ping is about 400

As it is a fact finding mission you are after then go and have a look on //www.solwise.co.uk You should find plenty of info on whata router does that a modem does not.......VPN, pass-though (which is what CS needs), firewall etc etc.

I use the Speedtouch 510v4
Modem/4 port router combo. Has it's own h/w firewall built in.
works a treat. The GUI isn't the best but you can telnet and set things up from there.

The ASUS AAM6000EV works for CS too :D Unfortunately not on my narrowband telephone line though :(

I have an alcatel Speedtouch 560 Wireless router. It has a built in firewall, DNS, DHCP servers, one 10BaseT port to connect to a hub or switch and also an internal wireless access point so you can surf from the back garden :D .
Doorman was asking me about routers recently and I recommended him a NetGear router whihc was about £80 with everything mine has except wireless, plus it also has a printer port so you can give you pritner an IP address and share it on the LAN.
You don't really need to be spending over £150 for a good router these days with integrated modem and all the standard servers. If its DSL you have then yo ucan either do it sheap and just get a modem but as TL rightly points out having the extra features of a router with the firewall etc.. makes a big difference on speed and flexibility.

--Interesting. I run the Draytek Vigor2600 and it's great - no issues. I know a while back there were some oddities with CS, but they were actually fixed pretty quickly - I was following a couple of friends with the USB2200 and they were quite happy.

--Yeah, you're right - a router locking up when you try and put a load of traffic through it is far preferable. How long has this 'feature' been known, and when is it being fixed?

Well they musta sorted the issue out somewhere along the the line I have just bought the USB vigor jobby and it works a treat on everything

what about me having things going horribly wrong.....my modem has never gone wrong yet, but theres not much u can do with a 56k
Eclipse have sorted out a date for me of the 16th of June so it looks like im gona need to make a decision on a modem/router.
I agree with TL im going to go with the saem one as Gandy then if it balls up its his fault :D :D Or he could help me out on setting it up.
Oh forgot this little bit....Because i am not out of my 12 month contract with BT for ISDN they want to make me pay an additional charge of £90 on top of the setup fee of £55 just for going from a BT product to..........A BT product...bstrds.
