Title: About posting images: virus, high jacking, trojans and so on
Post by: Bob on August 09, 2006, 12:15:27 PM
I thought I should make a new thread out of this to not pollute the old one, since this might be something worth looking closer into:

Manny, can you tell us what is ERROR SAFE??? because the place where you hosted this pic keeps reporting "your computer couldnt pass the scan for errors, bla, bla, bla, would you like to install our soft???

You see, this is a highjacking tool for installing crap in the computers, virus, explorer highjacks, trojans and so!! please, review that site! and host the file in any other place!!

I can provide free space in my own server for SoG web purposes, if you want so.

Regards!

I was thinking a bit about that error you got Saori, but I can't really say that it rings any bell.  The site Manny used for posting his image is (http://imageshack.us/img/iss1.png) (http://imageshack.us), and that's the program everybody (at least almost all) use to get pictures on the forum.  As far as I know, it's a safe place to put your images, and I have never experienced anything bad with it.  If you wanna read a bit more about it, you can check out [post=118755]this thread[/post] where there's a bit more detalied description of it and how to use it.

Well, I got a pop-up with Error safe too, and I know for sure that this is, like mentioned above, a highjacking tool. Do NOT agree to this one.

I dont get any popups when i click the image. I see some banners above and below - but nothing else.

I was quite sure that imageshack was relatively neutral.

If there is a pop-up that's bothering you, I wouldn't know.  Could reccomend using a bit more safe browser (read: something else than IE), and make shure you configure it to block such things (Firefox for instance: never had a problem with it).

And if you like to have those pop-ups showing: well, I assume people are sensible enough to not click on stuff like that - at least I hope so

And as DonnieKingo also said: I don't think Imageshack itself is any risk to use, so if you block out the other stuff, it shouldn't really be a problem.

Well actually Firefox has more known bugs / security holes then IE (simply because it's open source and IE is not). The problem is however that these highjacking thingies are mainly aimed at exploits in IE, because the majority of the people use it. So it's true that you'll be safer with something else then IE, simply because most of the people that write malware can't be bothered with exploiting security holes in 'alternative' browsers; for them it's more trouble then it's worth.

As for all the pop-ups and other crap. Don't ever press the 'yes' button if it asks: 'do you want to install this ... trojan' :yell: . The main reason computers become infected is because of the stupidity of people, not because of exploits / security holes. In all these years (13) I've only had one virus on my computer eventhough I'm not using a virusscanner, firewall, pop-up blocker or anything (and yes the one time I did get one it was my own fault (downloaded a bad crack)).

In other words, Imageshack is fine, just don't click anything that looks dodgy.

Error safe is a file already installed on your pc. When you open a website that uses sometihng on port X, it will instead open the error safe site, and make a popup to give you the oppotunity to remove this virus... that they themselfs have installed on your pc...
Some adware removers can find and destroy this file, but alot cant. So if yours is unable to, theres nothing for it but to try other programs, or just live with it.
And remember, when a popup like that one comes, always press the x in the top corner, never yes OR no! Both will probably do the same thing... nifty trick actually. a lot of popups have the whole warning as a link, so remember the x..

Oh, and Sandrion. I cant get myself to believe that you in 12 years, never have had more than one virus.  A lot of small spywares just slumber on your pc while sending everything your doing (what sites your looking at, and what games your playing), and sending it to various sites on the net.
Also theres a bit chance that you have small files in your shared folder form being on a network with someone, small viruses. Try downloading Lavasoft Adaware and make a scane. Id like to know how many it find... friend of mine did that once after not using any security for 2 years... i think he found about 36k files :norty:

Yes, that is of course apart from the spyware stuff  . But you get those every time you install anything (even windows itself). Most of them are relatively harmless. (Like cookies that register what websites you visited so they can adjust the type of banners they are showing, for example.) Even WoW has some 'spyware' running in the background (hack/bot scanner). By virus I meant one that kind of messes up your comp and requires you to reinstall everything.

It could be possible that his system already is polluted and that imageshack was a trigger..... It could happen to any site....maybe a countdown on it. I know that pop up he got and I must asure you all guys close it with the "X" in the right corner.  Don't click yes. I looks reliable but it is not something from Microsoft, McAffee or Symantec.

These kind of pop up tend to pop up at a veriaty of sites.

Just be carefull surfing the net.....Don't just clikc okay or Yes...you might allow a trojan or spyware and that can eventually endup that your account is hacked (or other accounts, even this forum).

Yep, the main reason I don't use one  . It harms performance; badly. I always make an image of my OS partition, so I don't have to reinstall windows and stuff in case something goes wrong. A restore only takes like five minutes and then you're good to go again.

Use Firefox (http://www.mozilla.com/firefox/) mate, it's included
Haven't used Opera (http://www.opera.com/) for some time, but I wouldn't be surprised if it's included there as well 8)

And btw, for those of you that are worried for stuff like pop ups and such things: the biggest security risc for your computer is located between the screen and the chair...
Think about that :norty:
