Title: LAN X - Requests for PC's / Parts
Post by: DuVeL on August 21, 2006, 08:02:59 PM
Not sure if my Shuttle can be arranged before LAN X so here's the "I might need something you don't use"-thread.
I've allready send Dingo a PM but he hasn't replyed yet so is there anyone out there who can help me out?
Beer in return as usual.

Maybe the other foreign visitors have something they might need aswell?

I was planning on brining my laptop to game on, and other than that, I pretty much don't need much other stuff.  The only thing that might be a problem, is if I'm not allowed to bring any hand luggage into the cabin (terror threat and stuff (stupid terrorists <_<)), cause I don't really feel like sending my laptop as normal luggage, and if so I would need a whole computer.  But let's just hope that's not gonna be a problem.  No terrorist stuff for the next months, and we should do just fine

And btw: it would be a bit hard to bring my 24"W LCD monitor with me, so if anybody has one to spare...

Check about half a month before the trip if handlugage is allowed or not. I believe it's allowed again after what I've heard the other day.

Last time I had some trouble with power cables with my external disk as we use a different type of plug. If someone could bring some spare pc power cables it would really make it easier. Two cables for me would really help!

One important thing just came to my mind: I guess you folks over there don't have the same interface on the power cables as we have here in Norway?  Cause if so, I'm gonna need to get my hands on some kind of adapter (if nobody has such a thing, that is).
Cause it would be a bit sad to be there the whole weekend with a laptop that has a battery which lasts for two hours or so, without being able to charge it

You can buy sockets that are for Euro use.
The one you plug your laptop in and then plug it in to the UKsockets.
If you get what I mean.

A standard Euro-UK converter can be picked up cheaply at your airport (or elsewhere in Norway) and will do to convert the two-pin plugs to the UKs three-way type.  We don't tend to have these in the UK as our travel plug converters are all the other way around (i.e UK -> Euro/US).

Standard UK electricity is quoted as 230V/13A - 50Hz
(actually supplied at 240V)

From memory, your Norwiegan PSU should be okay with that - might want to double-check though.

I'm bringing my laptop, and on the power adapter it says "Input: 100-240V~  50-60 Hz  2.5A", so I guess that shouldn't be a problem as long as I bring a Euro-UK converter.

Thanks folks

So, is everyone more or less tooled up for the event?

Just wondering, because I may be able to knock something half decent up.

If I travel by train I should be fine carrying my monitor in it's box along with some bits and pieces (hdd, graphics card). If there's the possibility of borrowing a computer then I won't have to fight with traffic so much. Is there a list of people who need parts and people who are offering them? :)

I've a base with a Barton 2500 on an NF-7S, could flatten it with XPSP2 if there's a GFX card available. Half a gig of RAM's weak though unless I can borrow some from work.

If anyone could spare some sort of monitor - doesn't matter if it's CRT, LCD, TFT, LSD, DVD or whatever - I would be most grateful!! Somehow I have a feeling that checking in a LCD monitor in the airport is asking for trouble, or at least a broken monitor :eyebrow:

Security is pretty tense in Copenhagen these days (and I imagine it's no less so in London), so Delan and I may not be able to bring any electronic parts as hand luggage. I'm going to write the Airport to ask whether or not we can get some sort of dispension, so that we can at least bring or harddrives, but if not - then what the H do we do?!?

Computer equipment is OK to check in to hand luggage

I've just come back from holiday and took my laptop, digital camera, chargers etc.

They only have restrictions on cosmetics, toiletries and liquids (which you have to taste).

I'm sure you'll be OK just check your airline's website and they'll have an up-to-date list

If we will have any problems it will be in Copenhagen Airport. The customs there are generally at a high level, which can be really annoying. The media has been talking about an increased level of security, since there has been talks about the next attack should be Denmark, which both me and mono read and heard in the news, but after mailing back and forth with the airport they told us that the current level allows us to bring the PC hardware into the cockpit, but if the security level should go up anyway we will most likely not. Phew... how's that for a long sentence. So better have a plan B ready

Can anyone spare a monitor of some kind, please? I find that gaming is so much more fun with such a device... and I'm not too happy about bringing my own LCD through security and stuff. I'm not even sure that I'm allowed to bring the extra 7 kg into the cabin...

As you can read in [post=153793]this post[/post] it doesn't look too good about my laptop for the coming lan.  The **** has really hit the fan, and it looks like I'm gonna have to ask for something to borrow.

If it's something that I can play BF2 on, I'd be really happy, but as long as it's capable of running a few good games of solitare, I won't complain :P

Think both Sheepy and BigFatCat said in another thread that they might have something to borrow - could I perhaps get some details about that?
Or do perhaps somebody else have something better (or easier to bring) stuff I could use during the weekend?

Not sure if Delanvital is borrowing anything from Liberator (a PM might be in order), I did get an offer from Lib though but hopefully my Shuttle will be LAN-ready. If Libs is taken, try a PM to DarkAngel (also a WoW-wer).
And if all fails and my Shuttle is there, you can use it aswell if you want.
