Title: What do I need
Post by: Bob on October 05, 2006, 11:09:18 AM
I'm gonna run out now to buy CS:Source, so I can bring it to the lan and hopefully hand out a head-shot or two :norty:

But what du I actually need?  I remember from the old days, CS was just a free expantion to Half Life.  Is CS:Source in the same way a downloadable expantion to Half Life 2?  Or don't I perhaps even need Half Life 2?

You could just download Steam, install that, then buy Source through Steam? No movement required bar a bit of light clicking and typing :)

it might be available to purchase on it's own, but it might want to you buy it as part of a pack. probably with HL2. But it might still work out cheaper. Worth checking.

Either any of the half life 2 packs, they all come with CS:S

OR

The counter strike source disk, which will also come with day of defeat source, and HL2 multiplayer

And a few hours to update/activate/install/decrypt the whole thing

For me it came free with HL2. Do you have that?
Otherwise what Monkey suggested!

Nope, don't have HL2.

And I think that downloading Steam and install/buy Source through that ain't a good sollution in this case, since I hope to get to play it during the lan.

But I think I'll run down to a shop in town and buy HL2, than at least I have  the discs to install it :)

er ... you should definitely install and update before you leave if possible. Steam can take hours to download and update all the new stuff

Well, problem is only that my laptop crashed earlier this week (gfx card flipped, long discussion in another thread), so the lan I'm borrowing a computer from BigFatCat, reinforced with a gfx card from NinjaFreak.

So it'll be a bit hard for me to install it in advance - guess I just have to take my time

hmm, some other lanner with his css updated could backup his copy of css and then transfer it to your pc?

but you still need steam(updated)+account and a valid ccs key thats already been activated

maybe youve got a trusted friend who you can go to to create account/authenticate the key. it should work, unless ime missing something..

You could buy it, give the CD-key to BFC (And hope he doesn't keep it to himself) and ask if he can install Steam + updates if he has the time.

I don't need it, my games are already installed and updated via steam. I've a 750MB steam installer at home, would that help?

actually this is true...copy the required .gcf file from someone else and the rest should be reasonably quick I guess. I had forgotten the dying laptop was yours :)

Would that mean that you could just copy-paste that over to the box I'm borrowing, and I'm mostly good to go?

Btw, I was just in town, bought CS:Source (also including HL2:deathmatch and DoD:Source), so I guess I can fix the registration/activation of my account myself.
Gonna try and install it on the temporary desktop I've been able to borrow from my flatmate - think it should just meet the minimum requirements...

I've installed Steam now, and I'm about to creat an account - is it the same here as with BF2, that I have to play with the name that I have as an account name (and that it's not changeable), or can I play CS with whatever  name I please?

whatever name you please, account name = your email adress

p.s you can switch your name in game too
