Nice comment from this fella:

Another thing that is wrong with this is that everytime you run an effective anti-spyware program it would make you unable to play the game because it would wipe the file and make you unable to play the game since either it wouldn't boot or it would crash when it searches for the file. Plus their is lag when someone joins a server and info uploads, its invasive to privacy since it can read personel information. I highly doubt its true... It would also be too distracting I reckon, be funny if someone went on and there was a billboard for porn or something though...[/Quote {ROTD} (http://www.totalbf2142.com/forums/member.php?u=876)]

I reckon EA isn't that stupid. Time will tell then!

Shame, I liked the look of the "Aliens" dropship and MTOB.

I think people will be put off buying 2142, there's still a backlash against BF2 and these hidden extras will further leverage non-purchase.

None of us are in a position to be able to confirm it but the link of totalbf2 site to the podcast doesn't work for me. The link from Hexus.net to the podcast does work:

Well I will be buying the game, ads or not, it doesn't bother me. I know many of you guys don't like EA or their products, but BF2 is probably the cheapest and best game considering how many hours of fun I've had playing it. I'm not sure if this is going to be better than BF2, but I'll buy it, play it and if its no good I'll sell it or simply revert back to BF2. From what I understand of the thread, EA reps have confirmed it does not add spyware to your pc or check your browser favourites etc.

Huzzah for the voice of reason. Like the Starforce business didn't do enough to dissuade developers/publishers inserting spyware into their products.

I think I will. I didn't take part in the BF2, for some reason, so I think I'll try this one. I hope we will have a 2142 server, and if not I may get BF2, but you will anyhow have to treat me gently, since I am a total n00b on this game (as my questions to Duvel surely prove :-) ).

Well, I've only played 2142 for just 15 minutes at the LAN. I only know BF2 quit a bit.

BF2142 Advertising Info

Posting on behalf of the Dev Team
--------------------------------
Greetings,

We would like to provide more information on in-game advertising in Battlefield 2142. To try and help everyone better understand it, here is how it works.

The in- game advertisement is respectful of players' privacy: it never accesses files not directly related to the game, and it does not capture personal data such as cookies, account login detail, gameplay behaviour or surfing history. As it is an integrated part of Battlefield 2142 and not a separate program, it only runs when the game is running.

Because BF2142 delivers ads by region, the IP address of the player is used to determine the region of the player and helps serve ads by region and language; for instance, a player in Paris will be presented with ads in French. Note that this IP address is not stored on the advertisement server and is not repurposed for other uses.

A unique ID number is anonymously assigned the first time the player joins a Battlefield 2142 online game. It is stored locally on the PC but is not linked to any personal details.

The in-game advertisement gathers what we call “impression data”, such as location of the billboard in the game or duration of advertisement impression. It
helps see how many people have seen an ad â€" but not who has seen it.

We are also conscious that the advertisement shouldn’t distract the player from the overall gaming experience, so all ads fit in the unique environment of each level in the game. The content of the ads is also controlled to ensure that no offensive content is displayed in Battlefield 2142.

We all hope that this explanation will address recent concerns on the advertisement in Battlefield 2142.

See you on the Battlefield.

That's just silly. Dewey made a valid point and you take one thing out and belittle his arguement. Back in your cage beast. :ranting2:

I agree 110% with Dewey except we all know that CS 1.6 was the cheapest and best game :D

Well it arrived this morning, like I said in another thread I'm not desperate to play it, futuristic stuff isn't my bag really, but I'll give it a go and report back after some serious hours.

Please do not play the demo thinking it will be the same as the retail version, many of the features are turned off and you won't get the full experience.

Also, the demo is free so you'd be wasting your money.

Well, if they are putting adverts into the game I would hope that any future expansions they develop are free for all.

If they are charging you for the game and then using your bandwidth to download adverts into it, they should try and keep the interest alive in the game to keep their profits from the adverts.

Also, how long is it gonna be until we get a "patch" that activates this "feature" in BF2?

I remember the days when you paid to have the ads removed from software, not paid for the honor of watching them.
